Dear FAWMers,
another FAWM has come and I am happy to be a part of it again, particularly in these dark days of the Modern Middle Ages we are living in, with an omnipresent propaganda on an unprecedented scale, which the world has hardly ever seen before. Even worse, the very last, very, very tiny remnant of real, free, professional, objective, fact-based journalism was burned at the stake of hypocrisy at the latest when Julian Assange was arrested.

Against such a background, writing a song or just a little set of lyrics (as I do) seems even a bit less relevant than ever (if it ever mattered to anyone at all - except, of course, for the few of us present here). Despite it all, let´s continue what we have been doing in the past so far, as - if nothing else - writing is a part of ourselves, this is who we are…

As far as I am concerned, I have set some new goals for this FAWM for myself and there will be some novelties, too. Those who know me also know that I like to write lyrics in different languages from time to time. This FAWM, however, I am going to do this more systematically, by - after completing one or two dozen sets of lyrics in English - writing at least ten sets of lyrics in other languages in a row, ten in Spanish, ten in Italian, ten in French, ten in German, ten in Serbocroatian, and a few maybe in an invented language, too, at times eventually intermingled with a few sets of lyrics I will do in the context of Skirmishes. For me, it will be the first time to post lyrics in Serbocroatian here and the first time to write lyrics in Spanish at all…

As always, my lyrics are meant to be merely “rough ideas”, if anyone likes any set of lyrics and feels inclined to put it to music, I would be very happy, and please, feel free to alter the words in any way and to any extent you like…
Have a great FAWM!

holy plethora!! 119! Thanks for taking the time to listen to Let Go and the wonderful comment :) Much appreciated...
[avatar]
Yes.... I'll send it to you..... I am going to try to get some of tape hiss out of it tomorrow.... then I'll send it
[avatar]
Hi Arthur, thanks for the kind email concerning Shadows. I was unable to get the MP3 small enough to post on FAWM but hey, that's life. As long as you have it that is what matters. I join the many others in saying thank you for the wonderful talent you have with words.
[avatar]
Arthur - Thanks for providing lyrics for so many of us music types to pick and choose from. Without strong lyrics made available by writers like you, I would never have surpassed the target number of songs. I was happy to be involved with "Love Me Like I Love You" and "I Never Wanted to Say Goodbye". I see you got two versions of Say Goodbye. I find it interesting to see how other people respond to the same lyrics. Hopefully that's fun for you, too.
[avatar]
its up matey. feel free to go and add whatever you like to the description. Thank you so so much for giving me an extra late night burst with your amazing lyrics. Now FAWM feels like fawm as we have our collab
[avatar]
Arthur this is happening in a very exciting way. it will be finished very soon and has turned out nothin g like i intended but oh my i think you'll like it
[avatar]
Ok i am going for it. May be i'll add layers post fawm but ooo this is exciting . Cheers Arthur
[avatar]
Arthur, I know you're prolific, but again, you have truly astonished me: you're an 8-fold FAWM 2023 winner! I've come across some extraordinary collaborative gems on your list. Allow me to apologize for including a song in the list which may not be immediately recognizable as one of your own lyrics. The lyrics of 'Emotions Have No Notion' have been adapted rather freely by yours truly… Should we ever release it (the music is still in its early stages), rest assured you will receive 100% credit for all the lyrics!

Hoping to hear from you soon,

§ Roel
[avatar]
Hello Arthur, i am very late to the game but i was browsing your lyrics and found some beauties but managed to put music to a certain we''ve stood our ground only to see its already been taken . I not sure if i can do that for fawm although not sure of the rules but i'd still love a bash post FAWM if its ok with you . Cheers matey. I on a last day scramble
[avatar]
Bonjour Arthur,
@levesinet did a remix of my version on your "Parc Montsouris". He took it to the next level. I just uploaded it : https://write.fawm.org/songs/21116
[avatar]
Hi Arthur, I sent you an email a couple of days ago. Did you receive it?
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the comment on “Spooky California Night” - I know it was a while ago now, but for some reason your comment didn’t show itself to me then. 🧐😀
[avatar]
I thought you were crazy to promise that you'd write at least ten lyrics in a foreign language and then another ten in another and... I don't know how you do that. That is very impressive. I'm beginning to feel happy about this FAWM, this has made me forget these are Middle Ages we're living in. I want to thank you for providing input material that proved enjoyably challenging. For me it is important to keep learning by trying different approaches to creating music. Your good sense of meter explains to a considerable extent why so many fellow fawmers are drawn to your lyrics. I have learnt some more Italian and even Spanish. That Spanish thing was difficult but now I kinda approve the zigzaggy melody and maybe I could make it sound ok if I just sang it more relaxed. Sorry I can't do Serbocroatian or even German. I just haven't developed an ear for those languages.
[avatar]
my goodness, your page looks like the dead sea scrolls in a good way!! congratulations on your amazing output! I thank you all the more for taking the time for a listen to Letter Valentino. I appreciate you kind comments!
[avatar]
Hiya .. I’m wondering whether you’ll add the music to un uomo inutile. It still says awaiting music but I’ve heard the ‘finished’ version snd it’s wonderful. Can you add it please it might be the pinnacle of my year’s FAWM .. as too much happening here otherwise ( hence communicating here snd not email - sorry)

Thanks for the comment on 'Rendezvous'!

@nadine
You're welcome. I've been there quite often, cause some friends lived there. The city changed a lot in the last 10 years. The whole city centre changed, you won't recognize it!
[avatar]
Hey there, I've sent an email regarding our Round 4 collaboration. Looking forward to getting your lyrics and turning it into a song!
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the listen and comment on 'Start Living the Dream'!
[avatar]
Many thanks for your very kind words on my song, “An Alcoholic’s Tale” - made my day! :-)
[avatar]
Hi Arthur. Thanks for your very kind and detailed comments about "Ruby" and "Loyalty." I really appreciate knowing what appeals to careful listeners and talented writers (like you), and I'm glad you found various aspects to like. Your support is very encouraging to me, so thanks again!
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Glimpse! Appreciate the comment!
[avatar]
Email received! I'll see if I can work something and I will let you know.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for the reviews and great comments on my songs. They mean so much to me.
[avatar]
@nadine
Thank you! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed "Glimpse". And congrats to your... ehm... 7 times winning FAWM?

The music of Minas Gerais, a mountaneous region of old gold mines, is introverted and sophisticated. Erudite music since the Baroque era. Clube da Esquina emerged from there.

And here's the only song I keep performing with my guitar.

If you like some Brazilian popular song, do a Google search 'letras (name-of-the-song)'. I'm amazed at how many songs this huge site of lyrics covers.
https://www.letras.mus.br/chico-buarque/85975/
Fun stuff. Here the performance doesn't completely match the lyrics given.
https://www.letras.mus.br/doris-monteiro/990010/

Notice the s is pronounced sh at the end of a syllable. The letter s becomes voiced based on the following sound:
carinhoso (z); mesma (zh); Todas as manhãs (z zh sh);
but these mutations depend on the dialect.
Look up how r's are pronounced (rua, carro, ardente, ficar; maravilha, praia).
Ferreira - two different r sounds; Pereira - same r sound twice.

Now Vinicius de Moraes was an old school Brazilian poet. He often pronounced the r's as in Spanish. Nobody else does that when singing his lyrics these days, not since the 1950s.
https://www.letras.mus.br/vinicius-de-moraes/86493/
[avatar]
Observe lh and nh where Castilian has ll and ñ.
Look up differences between Lisbon and Brazilian Portuguese.
Notice the pronunciation of de and te and di and ti in Brazil (in unstressed syllables, not in stressed syllables).
Notice how the Brazilians tend to pronounce and often even write the word 'para' colloquially as 'pra'.
It's a nimble language and a quickly changing language.
Also words referring to women or girls. Mulher (my woman, wife; adult woman in general), moça (young lady, commonly used), garota (synonym for moça but not so common), menina (young girl), morena (a dark haired woman), namorada (girlfriend).
I've never come across the words rapariga and miúda in Brazilian lyrics.
It's the same language though. Portugal has been shifting to use Brazilian orthography.
[avatar]
You're always so polite. I feel Hispanic music goes against my essence. And I'm not equipped with Aragonese vocal cords! Those would be of use in Naples too.

Good luck with Portuguese. That's easier said than done, so I don't take that as a promise.
I say may you find moments of pleasure immersed in Lusophony! I can't really speak in Portuguese but I want to give you some hints to get started. Feel free to ignore them.

@doug52
Hello, Arthur. Been playing around lyrically and realized that one issue is putting the "singer" in a bad light. The "singer" comes across as a sad sap, making "him" look bad. Below is what I think I have come up with but to be honest, I dislike where I am going. [Again, one should never put the "singer" in a bad light.] so I am struggling.

THE TASTE OF LOVING

[Intro]

Once I had a taste for love,

thought I was a lucky man.

But it ended just as quickly

as it fell into my hand.

[V]

Said she was there to give me
her love in un-thinkable ways.
Then she kissed me, tightly squeezed me,
left me standing in a daze.

[V]

Thought I'd be chasing rainbows

ending with her and the gold.

But when she finished with me

She left me standing out in the cold.

[B]
Her eyes taunted and teased me.

Her touch ruled my body and soul.

The taste of love she fed me

had me losing all my control.

[C]
And now I feel like crying
while dark thoughts take root.

Spreading down deep to ensnare me.

This love-struck crazy old coot.

Guess I should start doubting

she'll return like the stars up above.

But like the fruit there in that garden

I had a taste of love.

[V]
When out there, love sounds amazing.
Until those wounds strike that never heal.
Again it starts off like a rainbow

so bright and so big and so real.
[avatar]
Wow. I am so pleased that you love my song, "Time Is Passing On". It was definitely a work of love. If you like that, you might also like "Still Finding My Way", the first song I did the very first day of February.
[avatar]
Hi Arthur, thanks for the note about QSIM, yes please add me as a collaborator so that will 'save' it for me 😀 My recording equipment is not quite ready to use but I should have something for next week. I can already hear it in my head 🎵 🎵
[avatar]
Hi Arthur, I've left a note on Quando Sento Il Mandolino...
[avatar]
@doug52
Hello! Thank you for the comment on "UnBroken Chain." Always appreciated. :)
[avatar]
Actually I don't know why he named it Mississauga. 😀
[avatar]
@jeff9
Thanks, Arthur, for your kind remarks about Sounds Like A Song. Mike wrote some great lyrics and has an incredible voice, although--full disclosure, a fair number of the lines such as the one you mention are just famous country song titles which these two characters in the song found to be particularly descriptive of their lives.
[avatar]
Arthur - thank you so much for listening. I'm so amazed that you've managed to create so many wonderful lyrics in so many languages. I like imagining making music for one in German, one in Italian, one in French, and one in Spanish, even in my imagination I don't think I can pull of Serbo Croatian, but wow....
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the comment on 'Xenon Headlights'!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for the comment! I will definitely check your lyrics out if I find something that fits me. There seems to be quite a collection of lyrics already. I wish I was as productive as you are.
[avatar]
I’m glad you liked my music for L’amore. Era molto difficile!
[avatar]
Perfectly fine with me Arthur. Please email them to andybalham at hotmail dot com.
[avatar]
@reklov
Herzlichen Dank für deine freundlichen Worte zu meinem "Honigmond"-Song, Arthur!
[avatar]
Sure thing! Keep them lyrics coming. :)
[avatar]
Hi Arthur. Maybe a lyric around the subject of aging. Looking back fondly and being grateful for your time and opportunities, but accepting that the time ahead is shorter than that which has passed. As a man of a certain age, I think that would be a good subject to tackle.
[avatar]
Hi Arthur, I finished the song. If you'd like to add your comments to the liner notes, please go ahead. I think I got most of the Italian pronunciation right--it's been a long time.
[avatar]
Hi Arthur. We have been paired together for Round 3 of the random collaboration. I did have my eye on recording Illusions (https://write.fawm.org/songs/11947), but I am open to some specially for the challenge. What would you prefer?
[avatar]
I am thankful for your positive response to "I Never Wanted to Say Goodbye". I've replied at more length to your email. For here, I'll just say that it's an honour to work with your lyrics. Thank you, my friend!
[avatar]
Sounds interesting! I'll have a crack
[avatar]
Hey! You got any lyrics you'd like me to make music for? :)
[avatar]
@arthurrossi thanks for the 2am words, I shall see if they work with the tune, thank you for putting the time and effort in to do this
[avatar]
@arthurrossi thanks Arthurro, I thought this kind of feel would work:
https://youtu.be/yMt3o-I2ltY
[avatar]
Oh, I like these lyrics for Dirigible Fixation. Let me see what happens with some music and I'll get back
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your kind words about Home Again!
[avatar]
@arthurrossi any progress on petrol rainbows? just checking :)
[avatar]
@scubed
Thank you very much for your lovely comment on “Sky Spirit”!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your ringing endorsement of the final product for "Love Me Like I Love You". That means a lot to me. It was a pleasure to contribute to it.
[avatar]
@jeff9
Ditto Patty's response on Always You. Thanks for taking a listen.
[avatar]
My, what a prolific writer you are! 67 songs? Can't wait to start listening. Thank you for your appreciation for Always You with @Jeff9. I just loved his dreamy treatment of that lyric, and I'm glad you enjoyed our collab. Now I have some listening to do right here!
[avatar]
Man you have been busy! Thanks so much for your very generous feedback on Soul City
[avatar]
@suziek
Thank you for your kind words on my lyrics Under the Snow Moon.
And how great that you write in different languages. I do that, usually in Portuguese. I look forward to listening to more of your songs!
[avatar]
@arthurrossi yes please (sorry for slow reply) please propose some words for '2am rainbows'. I will get our female vocalist to record a demo of it next week. I'm thinking a sad but defiant story of hardship (or implied hardship) an RnB bluesy ballad. Like Across 110th street (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce_DFjJMG04)

thanks
[avatar]
Correction! Too many irons in the fire. When I said I would finish it tonight, I was thinking of a different song that I had been working on. I plan to start on yours tomorrow.
[avatar]
Thanks for the freedom you are allowing me in "Love Me the Same Way I Do". I've been working on it today and hope to be able to post it later tonight. When I post it, I'll be sure to credit you for the lyrics.
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on my lyrics about CCM!
I think a variety of styles could be applied to them. I was thinking kind of rock and roll while I wrote it but I'm sure it could be pretty versatile, even using that particular worship style music as an ultimate parody. ;)
[avatar]
Yes, please add me as a collaborator on L’amore (or do we wait until I have the music—not sure how it works this year.)
[avatar]
Hi Arthur. Thanks again for your generous comments. I’m really glad you are happy with the song. I wouldn’t have delved into it if I didn’t appreciate your writing and phrasing, so thank YOU for the inspiration and trusting me to carry them forth.
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment! You have been busy so far - will check out what you’ve done so far!
[avatar]
Hi Arthur. I just posted our collaboration under the title "One Last Kiss." Thanks so much for getting things underway with your fine lyrics and hope I did justice to them with my music and lyric additions. Feel free to add comments to the post, if you like.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the kind words re: "A Taste of Yesterday."
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the listen and comment on 'Frosty Winter Day'!
[avatar]
Glad you liked my Heresy. Thanks for your effusive praise. I am impressed by your multi-lingual output this FAWM, but like Elizabeth, you are so prolific that it is hard to keep up. Between the two of you I think I'd have to spend my entire time at FAWM following you 😋
[avatar]
Hi Arthur. Thanks for reaching out about co-writing. I appreciate your faith in the possibilities. I think I might be able to do something with "Love Me the Same Way I Do". At first glance, I think I might have to adjust a few words along the way to make it fit the music in my head. If I have the freedom to make small adjustments in the interest of the overall song, then I'm in. Let me knowif that's okay with you.

Cheers!
[avatar]
I have a lot of respect for polyglots; I work with so many of them. To be able to dream, create lyrics, and communicate in so many languages is such a valuable skill!!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the thoughts and encouragement re: "Flaming June" and your kind words on my voice. It's much appreciated.
[avatar]
I do have an idea I've been kicking around that you might find interesting. It's a song expressing hopeless admiration for / obsession with the rigid airships built in the first half of the 20th century, even in the awareness of their dangers and limitations. This is an analogy (hopefully not too heavy handed) for a conflicted and reticent affinity for the nationalist ideals that were so disastrous during the same time period, yet have such a strong pull on us even today.

The song title for this idea is: "Dirigible Fixation".

In terms of style, I like to go medium-heavy and impressionistic (sometimes to the point of oblique). For this song idea, for example, I wouldn't want the words "dirigible" or "fixation" to appear in the lyrics at all. As somebody commented on one of my songs, "it's a definite mood".

Let me know if this is a direction you'd find interesting, or if there's something else you'd like to do. Also, full disclosure: I have trouble coloring inside the lines. So what usually works from a collab standpoint is for me to take your work, adapt it to music, then you can review and help fix the resulting lyrics
[avatar]
My goodness, Arthur!! I see you're writing lyrics at your usual torrid pace this FAWM!! I so admire your prolificacy. :-) I know I haven't been very present on FAWM the past several years. Just lacking that songwriting "spark", you know? Maybe I'll rediscover it soon. We'll see. Believe it or not, I *still* have some ideas for some lyrics you posted in 2016 ("The Girl From the Painting"). There's a song there that's definitely trying to blossom! I can't promise that I'll get it done this FAWM, though. As you can probably guess, I'm a dreadfully slow songwriter. I'm not built for FAWM, really. Lol! Anyway, I thank you for your greeting on my FAWM profile and hope you have a fruitful month! Cheers!
[avatar]
Thanks for stopping in, and also for the kind words.
[avatar]
Hey @arthurrossi , let's collab! How should we get started?
[avatar]
Oh, "Request access to this project from the owner." I'll click that.
[avatar]
Sure, I'll have a listen. I created a soundtrap account but I don't know what to do with it.
[avatar]
Hi Mr. Prolific. I sent you an email about the song (in case you don't check there often).
[avatar]
Hi Arthur! Thanks for the compliments on my Starter Song. I’m still shaking off a cold and hoping for improvement on the vocal front.
[avatar]
I really appreciated your thoughtful comment on my song walk the talk. Thank you!
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind comment about "One Less Crocodile". Hopefully it satisfies the child in all of us.
[avatar]
@gm7
Thanks for the comment on green Comet blue Planet . You are having a awesome FAWM keep up the good work.
[avatar]
Danke für Deinen Kommentar! It was my goal to make the listener sweat and it seems I have achieved it 😎
Ich bin gespannt auf Deine deutschen Texte, vielleicht spricht mich davon was an und ich vertone es.
Wishing you a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Thanks for reply. I wrote a song and roughed it out (it's still very rough ) but quite apart from being a female - my accent is horrible (espeicially since I haven't spoken Italian in ages and ages. I cringe when I hear it. I'll tidy it up a bit though.. and send you a version with and without my voice for your friend to sing. I probably need to sing it a few times again today to get the phrasing better... I really enjoyed doing it... I hope you'll like it!!
[avatar]
Sounds great! I have a busy couple of days coming up but I hope to start on Time to Say Goodbye soon.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your kind words Arthur.
[avatar]
Hi! Just wanted take the time to stop by and tell you how much I appreciate the listen and kind comments on my song "Too Proud".
[avatar]
Besides, any decent musicologist will tell you that composers' own explanations are spectacularly unreliable. 😀
[avatar]
I'm so excited to see your ideas about writing in other languages besides English. I intend to write at least one in Spanish and at least one with a wild mix of the languages I know/study. Glad I'm not the only one!
[avatar]
I upgraded the song. Great lyrics!
[avatar]
Hallo Arthur! Vielen Dank für Deine Nachricht. Ich wünsche Dir auch viel Freude und sehe Du bist schon wieder super fleißig!

There was no referendum on NATO membership in Finland and nobody asked my opinion. It's cold and gloomy here and I feel tired. But then I watch the news and see the uSUAL TALKING ****HEADS, and it's a funny thing, how it builds up my blood pressure, because suddenly I'm not so tired after all. Blood begins to circulate in my brain. Indeed it works better than eating lots of (salty) salmiakki.
Anyway, my not being much of a lyricist, I don't have a lot to say in a way that would rhyme and not offend some people, so it's better for me not to use too much time attempting to write my own lyrics.
Good to see you, too, mister lyricist polyglot. I'll be lurking around, looking forward to potential language lessons. Let's see if I can get the sound libraries reactivated.

Arthur! I'm grateful that another new day is about to begin and we get to be a part of it. I intend to stop by even though I'm a little overwhelmed with education obligations. Thanks for the note.

How nice to see you back! Re funerals, not to worry, my Best Man's mother, at age 98. Part of my teenage years. She had a good run, and kept her marbles almost to the end. Would that we can manage that! Here's to FAWM (I'm away week 1)

Arthur - So glad you are here. Can't wait to see and hear what you come up with in English, Italian, French, Spanish, German....As a possible inspiration for other languages, here are two articles both by my friend Paul La Farge wrote about Volapük - a 19th century attempt at a universal language: https://www.villagevoice.com/2000/08/01/pk-memory/
The second about the elvish language in The Lord of the Rings:
