hi! i started FAWM.

science nerd + pop music junkie who grew up in the bluegrass, went to school in the tundra, and now i live in steeltown. i've been in bands in all of those places. he/him/yinz/y'all. FAWM is my main gig at the moment so please support what we do! 😍 https://write.fawm.org/donate

historically been a guitar-rock kind of guy. before COVID lockdown i had only one hardware synth, no MIDI cables, and no DAW plugins. now i've... started... a collection. πŸ˜… i hope to make better use of them for FAWM this year.

#indie #pop #folk #rock #guitar #drums #modular #synth #4_track #dawless

was really productive in early FAWMs, got busy with work in the 2010s, quit my job in 2022 and now (like stella) i'm trying to get my groove back...

@pippa
Pleased to find you and your pretentious CV, Thanks for starting FAWM, it is a wonderful place of inspiration and congeniality.
[avatar]
The β€˜freak out’ song started out with two separate songs on the tape that marvsmooth started. He couldn’t send the tape, but sent the files and I loaded it onto the tape. Brad had the wonderful idea to eliminate the gap between songs and make it one. I drummed for both but then Ezra played different things. Brad did Brad, lol. Perfection.
[avatar]
Hey, just letting you know I followed up on slack around the multitrack multiverse thread you had. Not sure how often you're online there, but let me know if you have questions about it!
[avatar]
yeah, burr. you got the win again... and the win on the new site.
[avatar]
Congrats on hitting 14 (and then some) again!
[avatar]
Hey Burr, looks like a productive fawm for you, yay! It's been chaotic for us, but we couldn't miss out. Thanks for everything you do to make this happen - we appreciate it greatly!
[avatar]
@ohdeer
Ha yes. I knew it was one of the FAWM Founders and thought it was you!
[avatar]
@deena
Thank you so much for all you do! I love this place, it's so inspirational and it gets better every year!
[avatar]
@ohdeer
Thanks for making FAWM happen. Could I be cheeky and ask if there is ANY chance of getting to hear your song from last year about your cat again? Even as a low-fi demo? I heard it once and it is stuck in my head every time I see my cats eat!
[avatar]
Thanks for the howdy, Burr. Nice to hear from you! I'm getting started a little late this year but will get some songs up before the end. Found out we have a mutual friend in your town.
[avatar]
@liz561
I just wanted to let you know that after an hour of hair-pulling I figures out the posting! Sorry to bother you.
[avatar]
@liz561
HELP!! I can't figure out how to post a song I did in garageband. I will probably need some help again because I also recorded in Logic Pro (got a new keyboard and it messed everything up from how it recorded before). I paid for FAWM to host my songs. Please guide me Obi-Wan!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for leading that AI discussion in the Zoom meeting, and it was edifying to hear all the different viewpoints folks had on the subject!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on Litter Defence Volunteers. I may have overdone the sample mangling at the beginning. The actual commercial was pretty upbeat and not particularly creepy.
[avatar]
Thank you for the commentary and analysis. It means a lot to me. This style I’m working into is a new thing for me. I’m about to take a little dive into your offers.
[avatar]
Aw man. Thank you so much for all your kind comments. It is good to be back in that FAWM groove. I'm waay behind on listening, so I'm gonna have to dig into your stuff very soon.
[avatar]
Appreciate your note on Nothing There. Music can definitely be a mirror sometimes.
[avatar]
@arkka
Thanks for the comment on β–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆβ–ˆ! Not sure how it happened either, it almost feels like it happened despite of me πŸ˜€ I was just fooling around by paulstretching another track and discovered those sounds by accident. By the way, the title may have been partially inspired by your bio because I remembered seeing someone on the site using similar characters (I was a little bit worried about how the site would handle it, so thanks for that as well!)
[avatar]
Appreciate the kid words.
[avatar]
@mk2021
Thanks for listening to my track and giving your feedback. It means a lot.
[avatar]
@owl
I wish my slide had that good of an origin story! Thanks for your kind comment.
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen and comment on Peckerhead. I appreciate it! FAWM has been awesome. Thanks for the welcome as well as all the great work on the site and the overall community!
[avatar]
Yeah it's a pretty dark song in general, and yes it's mostly composed of the two chords Am and F, then midway it throws in C, D and G chords. Thanks for the feedback.
[avatar]
like I wasn't nervous enough about the 4-track tape, then you post that on my profile page . . . . . might start hiding from the post man.
[avatar]
Hi Burr, I've joined the FAWMslack if you'd like to add me to the video collab channel. Thx.
[avatar]
Hey Burr! Tape 3 is supposed to be delivered on Thursday. I hope that all is well!
[avatar]
Thanks for your hard work to keep the fawm ball rolling! As a fawmling this whole thing has taken me by surprise. The music, the people, the immediate addiction to writing better songs. Thank you.
[avatar]
Hey Burr, thanks so much for all you do, and if there's anything I can do to help (beta testing, data stuff, Python) please let me know. Hope we can talk modular in the not-too-distant future. Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Thank you for the sweet comment on Dear Helga. The song was definitely worth being late to class for (also most of my teachers know what I'm doing this month and they support it, one of the benefits of being in music school) :)
[avatar]
Hi Burr. Not sure if you've got notifications turned on for Slack, but I have replied to your request in our message thread.
[avatar]
keep up the good work. in the off season, i quite enjoyed the 4-track cassette videos --- i do just enough video editing and storytelling to somewhat appreciate how well they're crafted.
[avatar]
Burrrrr!!! Such fond memories of you! Thought it was about time I tried Fawm since I’ve heard so many great things about it from so many people! I love that you created this!
[avatar]
Yay! Glad you're participating again this year. Hard to believe is was 18 years ago the first time I did this and we did that mini-tour - we were just babies.
[avatar]
Welcome back!! Let's make a dreamy cassette!
[avatar]
Burr, Thanks for you wisdom on "Ready or Not". It was a quick write and I haven't settled into it yet (no pun intended). Everything I write for FAWM usually needs more work.
PS. Thanks for creating FAWM. It is not only fun but it has proved useful for me personally in stimulating the creative juices. Thanks!
[avatar]
Thanks Burr, always a bright spot of the year when FAWM rolls around. Looking forward to hearing what you have for us this time around! Think you'll have some more generative music for us this year?
[avatar]
Cool to be part of this for all of these years, Burr. Great thing you started. Love the redesign too. Looking forward to hearing your tunes this year.

That's a nice welcome. Makes me feel back in Bishop's Stortford. But yeah, we will see. Post-hoops everything feels off, but I'll write something this month and share once in a while. Thank you for this place, as always.
[avatar]
Thanks Burr! I always love hangin' around. Hoping I'll be able to get something done this month.
[avatar]
@morti
Thanks. It's good to be back. πŸ™‚

[avatar]

[avatar]
Is it too early to put in a request for French hip-hop? Submitted for your consideration...

@gm7
great video on using 2 SM57s. One of my methods is to have one 57 pointing at the contact point(right side at a 45deg) where the neck meets the body and the other 57 is on a boom over my left shoulder to capture what my "ear" is hearing.
Phase can be an issue but if the distance are close +- 1 inch..it works. Some panning and EQ and it gives a nice sound . You probably have tried this yourself, so forgive me.
This is a song from 13 years ago with that method for the acoustic guitar part.
