I play instruments with strings, though not the guitar! (My main instrument is the harp, but you might also hear some piano, viola or cello, perhaps even a uke...)

This is now my sixth FAWM! Huzzah!

The first two years I did concept albums (2018 was based around family life, 2019 was based around death and dying). 2020 was the fawm I finally managed to write the musical I'd had in my head for the last few years... I was nervous about doing it, but FAWM was just the sort of push I needed to make me get on with it... and I did! Later that year, a group of performing arts students recorded it remotely in lockdown and I am working on producing the resulting film. (Just Act I)
The last couple of years saw me coming in with no plan, and I have had possibly my most fun years of all, going with the flow, trying some of the games and doing more collabs.

You are very welcome, Em. Thank you for all your support.
[avatar]
Thanks Em. We'll see I guess!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the lovely comment and recommendation on my track with Mr @eargoggle! I guess one judges the process on the outcome, and since the song is way better than I thought it would turn out to be when we were part way through (in most part due to my collaborator's phenomenal bass playing skills - when that landed it was a real 'oh, this actually might work' moment), maybe the approach is a good one? Whether it is or not, I wouldn't recommend it if you're in a hurry!

Going to stick around for a week or three, as I have much listening/catching up to do here!

As you asked . . . Panic's storyline was going to be a bit of a classic boy like girl, ending on a happy note of girls does like boy, but with this bursts of panic/self doubt on the boys behalf. I Think it would have worked.

I wonder of FAWM's rules would find it acceptable for a song 1/2 done in FAWM 2023, then finished in FAWM 2024 to count in each year . . . . as long as I pinkie promise not to work in it in the in-between?

@beacon
How you got the files okay and they are usable. Feel free to edit it anything that is wonky or off-timed.
[avatar]
@beacon
I've got a moment now if you want to do a video chat to regroup? https://www.kumospace.com/beacon is easiest.
[avatar]
@beacon
I put down some lyrics for verse three. I figured elopement planning would work. ;-). Let me know what you get for melody and chords for the verses.
[avatar]
@beacon
@emkaydeebee I made a recording of the chorus melody (it's in the Google Folder), and the chords are in the Google Doc. I've also got the lyrics for my verse, and might take a crack at Verse 3. You'll noticed I have numbers next to the lines in your verse, as I was trying to count the syllables. I've tried to keep mine to 8 each line, so make it easier to scan. I have another song I'm working on tonight, but I'll try to get back to the lyrics for Verse 3. Check the doc!
[avatar]
@beacon
Great. I'm planning on working on the chorus tonight..
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on our collaboration
[avatar]
Thanks, Mary! I think it's my favourite as well. I did a very quick one-take recording of it last week and to be honest, if I'd not stumbled over a couple of lines, I should just have posted it right then. After going all round the houses with attempts to put it to a backing, I ended up doing exactly what I did on the first demo (but sang the lines better).
[avatar]
@beacon
Just wrote lyrics for chorus and 2nd verse. I'll try to work on chords and a melody next!
[avatar]
@beacon
Don't feel so much pressure! Whatever we do will be awesome!
[avatar]
@beacon
Hey, I'm just back from a weekend away skiing. Just more clarification, I was thinking more Jane Austen than Shakespeare!
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out and commenting on Play Safe -Frisbee.
Interesting comment re: railways and overhead lines. Where I grew up we had active railways on three sides. In grade 7 unfortunately someone lost a toe crossing the tracks early in the school year and we never heard the end of it all year.
[avatar]
I could give the spoken verse a try
[avatar]
Hey @emkaydeebee, feel free to add some vocals to the song. Just let me know what you need me to do to help out.
[avatar]
We’re just at the end of ours, thanks. Managed to pack them off to the grandparents for the whole week (this was both unprecedented and entirely on their insistence). Which meant I suddenly had loads of unexpected FAWM time! Yay. Win-win 😂. Hope you & Ray have a good one!
[avatar]
@beacon
Yes, more of the former. More modern language but sort of the sensibility of “we are trapped in society’s expectations” hence the too many strings.
[avatar]
@beacon
Just checked the lyrics. You leaned into the old fashion lyrics. I actually wasn't thinking of that. I was thinking more modern language with a earlier sensibility. Does that make sense?
[avatar]
@beacon
I'll check out the doc! and yes, I'd love your expertise on the audio recording of "too many strings"!
[avatar]
@beacon
Mary, got your email, and responded. Was at the dentist and in a meeting this moment.
[avatar]
@beacon
Not sure what to do for a collab but I think we have a lot of options. Want to get on a quick Zoom call today? Music at kenmattsson dot com.
[avatar]
@beacon
I'm sorry, I just realized you asked to do a collab, and I missed it! Not sure what there is time for, but we could see what we could manage!
[avatar]
ooh! Cool, yeah. If you can send it to andy@andyscott.it then I'll definitely get it :)
Thank you so so much
[avatar]
Hi Em! Thanks so much for joining in the "Leap" collab. I'm sorry, no, your email hasn't arrived! :(
[avatar]
Regarding our harmoniser challenge: Oh my! You're right, it ended up in the spam folder. Sorry! GMail is usually so reliable with these things I didn't even think to double-check. 😅 OK, got it now!
[avatar]
Regarding our harmoniser challenge: Yay! Just checked my e-mails and SoundCloud, but found no messages there? Where did you send it?
[avatar]
Just emailed you my audio file.
[avatar]
That would be lovely!
[avatar]
Had I had more time before ferrying kids off to school and getting to work I could probably have improved upon the last word. Thanks for the kind comments (and we still need to do something, don't we?)
[avatar]
Regarding Harmony #5
I’ve got the song, and it’s beautiful. I’m struggling with the harmony because it’s not a comfortable key for me. But I AM WORKING ON IT. I’ll try to get something to you in the next couple of days.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for the nice comment on Is There One More First Dance.
[avatar]
It's one of the things FAWM is great for, trying something a bit different to see where it takes you. In this case I think it got you to a melody that really unlocked the emotion in the song.
[avatar]
Ah, timpani are the bee's knees - Toby loved them best too! Sadly he gave up percussion at Grade 6 (he loved drumming best and did that to Grade 8 twice with different boards); I guess it wasn't all wasted though as he's in his last year at RNCM and is trying to make a career in music and production. He's just finished a month supporting The 1975 on their UK tour, and some of that was quite percussion-based, rather than pop/rock drumming. Or at least, he used mallets for a couple of songs rather than sticks... It all goes in and maybe some of it stays!
[avatar]
It’s not often a comment makes me laugh out loud and glow with pride at the same, but a comparison with Bernard Cribbens will absolutely do that! Delightful!

And yes, that was a cabassa. One of a number of percussion instruments bought for my son when he was doing percussion at school, that he didn’t ask for, never used, and has left here now he’s left home. Sometimes being a parent is thankless. And sometimes it’s brilliant to find a stash of instruments in his cupboard! Swings and roundabouts!
[avatar]
@rowanb
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback on my little Welsh ditty, I’m so glad you liked it!
[avatar]
Now you have to just get the self-care and lemsip dosage just right so you can ride the wave of "just coming down with a cold" forever! (Or at least for the rest of February).
[avatar]
The vocals are fab! Are you singing a little lower down your register in this one perhaps? It suits you.
[avatar]
@lowhum
sorry, got sidetracked, will post my piece tonight for the corpse
[avatar]
@jorh
Thank you for you glowing comments on ‘so that is my defence sir’ - made my morning :) hope you’re having a great FAWM!
[avatar]
What a creative approach to Home Alone. I would never have thought of involving so many instruments and my envisioned version of the song would have been really "plain Jane".Thanks. Nice job
[avatar]
Hey! Off we go!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the kind comment! Feels good to get going!
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on first dance. Appreciate it.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your comments on Never Stop Singing and Grounding Gone. I'm probably going to focus on lyrics this year because reasons. It's so good to know they are resonating with people!
[avatar]
@rowanb
Thanks for the tip! I’m new here and not hugely tech-savy as you can probably tell but hopefully I can produce something to share. 😁👍
[avatar]
@oddbod
Ah, I see. My apologies 🤚
[avatar]
Hello! I emailed you my section of the Acoustic Exquisite Corpse.
[avatar]
@kristi
Hello! I'm the lyric writer for our group in the Harmony Singers Challenge & just want to let you know I've been working on a lyric & am in touch with our melody writer/singer.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your kind words about my song “before I was born”
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your that kind and thoughtful comment on "I raise my glass for you"...
[avatar]
Ah the xylophone really sounds brilliant. Clear and yet still lovely and warm and woody. I can't see how you could overuse it to be honest.
[avatar]
You can tell I used to play in a swing/big band when I was younger. Those classic swing chord progressions just pop out of my brain and fingers.
[avatar]
When the quality's as high as yours, 'same-y' doesn't even enter the conversation!
[avatar]
You are absolutely CRUSHING it this year. Wow.
[avatar]
I would be pleased to have you do Home Alone
[avatar]
@beacon
Thanks! Let me know what you're thinking about for a collab!
[avatar]
By all means! Enjoy, my friend. 😀
[avatar]
I'm willing to cede it to you, or we could try one of our infamous duets?
[avatar]
@brisk
Ha, looking back you even said "Potatoes" in your comment to me, but when I listened to it I had not the foggiest that this was a spud-centric song. Great one, thanks for sending it over.
[avatar]
@brisk
Ha ha, I dread to think!

Now I'm trying to think of another song that does what I'm talking about here and I'm drawing a blank. One where really important information is withheld from the listener, and its funny because the specific details could be applied to lots of different situations. Is there even such a song that does this? Have you invented a new kind of song??
[avatar]
Inspirations strikes! Well done on capturing the moment. Sure as hell I'd have tried to remember it and failed miserably.
Your songs are always a treat, they really are.
[avatar]
Oh, I love it when you make me cry. It's like lubrication for songwriting...
[avatar]
Hey dere! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Thank you so much, that's awesome :)
[avatar]
Greetings to you! It’s always nice to see you around in the forums, as you invariably have a kind and/or productive thing to say. Any big plans for this year? I’ll be back to listen! Best wishes, as always.
[avatar]
Wishing you a very happy FAWM. I'd be delighted to collaborate with you if you are happy to :)
[avatar]
OOH! Swapping the melody between harp and xylophone could be brilliant. Or doubling it! Excited to hear what you come up with!
[avatar]
Huzzah! Glad to see you back! So excited for your musical/film news!
[avatar]
Welcome back. Happy FAWM. Looking forward to hearing all your beautiful songs this year.
[avatar]
@tan482
Hello! Welcome back! Can’t wait to hear you this year :-)
[avatar]
So happy to see you here!! I can't wait to hear your wonderful music again. (and, yknow, murders sometimes happen, so be on the lookout) :)
[avatar]
Hello my friend! All the best to you in FAWM this year!
