2023!

This year I will again have no idea what I'm doing while having a great time at it.

Lately I've been exploring personal stuff and past experiences with my lyrics. I also tend to purposely write the dumbest thing I've ever heard from time to time so you never really know.

I like to live track my vocals while playing classical acoustic guitar then overdub bass, electric guitar, synths, and drums/percussion. I'm looking forward to using FAWM23 to experiment with drum mixing and mics—the Glyn John method in particular. I also make songs completely from drawing midi in piano roll sometimes. I’ve been weaning off sample drums as my space, equipment, and knowledge allows me to use a live kit more and more. As always, playing to learn.

Contact me if you'd like to collaborate. I play all the instruments and need all the help I can get to get to fourteen songs. Let's gooo!

OCD and DS-1 are both classics. :)

Thank you for listening and commenting on The Water Is Safe But Everything's Dead, and many thanks for the kind recommendation!

Nope; a standard 21-fret neck. Huge amounts of compression and "MondoMod" from Waves help give it that distinctive sound, but weirdly most of it seems to come from the way I play it.

@toms
My first actually decent band was when I was in school in A2 40 years ago. Is there an Ann Arbor sound? Or is it just me? The music has developed in many ways, but I hear continuity all the way from The Rationals and Brownsville Station and The Stooges through the Cult Heroes and The State and my old friends Map of the World and many others in the 80s to all sorts of stuff in the 90s and 2000s and here we are today...anyway, your music is amazing.

@toms
Yep, the same Mott. He was a complex person, and benefitted Flint and Michigan in numerous ways. Before he died he put most of his money into the Mott Foundation, which has given billions for public purposes. And he was instrumental in founding both Mott Community College and what is now UM-Flint. And tons of other things. But he really, really, really hated the socialists. (I can see his last office on the Mott CC campus from my front window - they keep it just as it was when he last left it.)

Oh, my. Your generous comments on Always You have made my day, Justin. Patty's lyric begged for a touch of soul and I really tried to dial some up for them. To channel a little bit of Van is a lofty ambition and to know that some might have bled through to a discerning listener is high praise indeed. Thanks so much, man.
[avatar]
I was quite touched by your comments on Always You with @Jeff9. I was so impressed with what he did with those lyrics, and I'm also very pleased that you think they could work in a variety of styles. That's quite a compliment. Thank you. Your comments brought me to your page...and now I have some listening to look forward to.
[avatar]
Thanks for the comments, I really love my pocket piano too, drooling over the new Pocket Piano 201 model coming later this year. I don remember exactly without opening the project but think I ran the guitars on Lower … through a cassette tape plug-in probably Aberrant DSP Sketch Cassette or XLN Audio RC20
[avatar]
Yeah, Protomartyr headlined the annual innercity indie festival here last year. They were pretty great. (This year the headliner is the Black Lips, which should be interesting too).

@mk2021
Many thanks for listening and commenting on my song - High Hopes and Low Expectations. I really appreciate it.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your lovely comments on Always You. I'm so glad you liked it. Jeff is a dream to "work" with. I showed him the lyrics and he just ran with them. I'd like to come back and spend some time here on your page.

E-mailed!

Still feeling like you could collaborate? I've got an acoustic slower one finishing up that I can send. No worries if you just aren't feeling the creativity, but thought I would ask.
[avatar]
Any ideas percolating? :)
[avatar]
Sweet! I'm just finishing up recording and I will do a super quick mix and send it over. Send me whatever stems you come up with. (or if it is not going to work, then NO worries) :)
[avatar]
Hey! Since we have not collaborated I only have your songs to guide me and over the years, I have really liked them. BUT, I have a new song i don't have anyone in mind for. Any interest in seeing if it sounds like something you could work with?
[avatar]
*ahem* Well that's interesting. At somepoint I've apparently invented a new email address for myself. Or the user profile template has extrapolated it from somewhere, but that seems unlikely - more likely I'm an idiot.
I've now updated it to an actual existing email address that will actually reach me.
[avatar]
Mail? That sounds exciting! (Haven't received any yet, but I can be patient...)

@cts
Hello. I’m here to help you to help me to help us get to FAWM. I’m about to send an email to you…
[avatar]
thank you. I shall repay your kindness when my head is clear. I hope we can be friends. Hugs.
[avatar]
Hey friend, thanks for the welcome. Now that I live in the sticks, I don't get to the big Y very often, but we should meet up some day.
[avatar]
Helloooooo! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Thanks, Justin. I'm hoping to finally get a few songs done this year.
[avatar]
Hey Justin, thanks and likewise!
[avatar]
Good morning!!! I hope your day is as beautiful and productive as you deserve. Thanks for stopping by. I'm looking forward to another great FAWM.
[avatar]
Hi there, hope you a have a great FAWM looking forward to hearing new tunes from you :)
[avatar]
Thanks Justin! 😁
Hope you have a fantastic FAWM

@chroes
Hi there, wishing you a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Hey! Looking forward to hearing what you get up to this year!
[avatar]
Hey good to see you around! Def looking forward to your jams.
[avatar]
It’s crazy how the space we use affects us in a creative way, but also each space has its own sound.
[avatar]
Your space looks great! I could certainly feel comfortable recording there
[avatar]
Hi, Justin. Have a fantastic FAWM time. I'm looking forward to hearing your new songs.
[avatar]
Hey ho! Let's go!!
[avatar]
Oh, gosh, too much pressure - I'm not saying that I've ever personally had a phrase sing for me! 😆 Hopefully I'll produce a sound or two that's nice to listen to this FAWM...

May that appreciation never leave you. I promise you, every time you make a jump in your own playing, you will find new facets of your favorites that hit you differently. To this day, I still feel that awe and wonder every time I hear violinist James Ehnes or cellist Astrid Scwheen play.
[avatar]
I like the M5s too, I have a set that’s done great by me.
[avatar]
Hi Justin. Welcome back. Looking forward to your 2023 music.
[avatar]
Hi, Justin! What a lucky find, indeed on that violin - and with personal history imbued in it, no less! Bowed string instruments can be so fickle, but so rewarding when you get a phrase to really sing or dance organically.

Happy FAWM, and I look forward to seeing and hearing what you dream up.
[avatar]
Done deal! Your people can talk to my people, we'll make it happen.
[avatar]
Happy FAWM Justin!!
[avatar]
@crisp1
Hey, Justin! Looking forward to this FAWM and hoping we have a chance to collab on one or two songs! Enjoy yourself!
[avatar]
@fuzzy
Hey, J, I hope you have a great FAWM!!
I'm looking forward to hearing more of your sounds!
And yeah, I'm going a bit overboard with the new bass guitar, making all kinds of unconventional noises with it.
[avatar]
Hey dude. If you fancy collaborate this year, I'd be up for that.
[avatar]
Oooo if your looking for mic recommendations that work well for the Glyn John method on a budget I highly recommend the neat mics worker bee, you can 1 for $80 new or as low as $50 so you can get the set for less than $200. I’ve used many mics in my day but I am LOVING these worker bees on everything I’ve used em on, vox, drums, acoustics, percussion and they look super cool to boot
[avatar]
Hello hello hello! Missed ya buddy! Look forward to your masterful jams
[avatar]
I know!!! Two sun appearances!! Miraculous indeed. We enjoy every second we get (all 15 of them). ;)
[avatar]
Hello and Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Yeah I’m thinking of starting another production forum topic again. It’s always good to learn from everyone. What will you be mic’ing this year?
[avatar]
We hardly got any snow in this last round (1/2" or less), but it has been a pretty crazy year so far for wintertime. I'm really looking forward to hibernating down here in the studio soon. I've hardly done anything in the past year. i did play drums today, so there's something! How're things with you on your side?
[avatar]
Big hello to you!! It’s always nice to see you here and look forward to hearing your music again.
[avatar]
Welcome back!! Glad to see a 'neighbor' here again. I'm really looking forward to hearing your amazing music again! :)
[avatar]
Hey, Jeustan! Happy FAWM!

You should've told me you don't have where to listen the tape, I have a few old walkmans (walkmen?) here, I could've sent you one! 🙂

Looking forward to your songs!
[avatar]
So good to see you here!!!!
[avatar]
Good to see you here mate!
