Contribute to my thesis research on songwriting? :D

[avatar]
Y'all, I'm super excited to be in my last year of undergrad for Music Ed—for many reasons—not least of which because I get to do a thesis project on whatever I want :D so naturally I'm focusing on songwriting and how constraints (like time and collaboration) can actually help writers become more prolific and self-confident, which leads to becoming stronger writers and musicians.

Do you agree? I want to talk to you.
Do you disagree? I want to talk to you. :D

I'm working on a Google survey for songwriters to fill out that will hopefully cover all the bases of inquiry, so let me know if you're interested in receiving that and filling it out. There may be a supplemental interview option as well, if follow-up or clarification is needed. The surveys won't go out until at least March, so don't worry about creating extra work for February or having it fall through the cracks in the madness of FAWM.

One other thing to know: the final paper will be published on my school's library website and available to the whole world, so I will make certain, if any potentially-identifying insights are included, that everyone remains anonymous unless they give express written consent to be named (I had to go through IRB evaluation for this and everything).

Thank you in advance for your insights! I look forward to hearing from whoever is moved to contribute.
[avatar]
Could be fun for me to fill out. I would be willing, Carley 😄
[avatar]
As someone who has now more or less blocked off Feb, July and August as the only months for new writing, and is fascinated by how I perform during a scrimmage vs any other time, I'm interested.
[avatar]
@corinnecurcio yayyy!! Thank you so much!
@spazsquatch there's a whole section in my paper on skirmishes, I think they're particularly transformative and I would love to hear more of your thoughts on that subject!
[avatar]
happy to help on this , its actually harder to stop me going on about songwriting! :-)
[avatar]
@coolparadiso we are quite an articulate bunch aren't we :D thank you, I'll add you to the list!
[avatar]
verbose might also be a word :-) @carleybaer
[avatar]
@coolparadiso that's actually the one I meant, dang it!
[avatar]
🙋 Happy to help!
[avatar]
@elesimo awesome, thank you! I was going to ask you and @burrsettles specifically but I wanted to wait until the madness of the site launch settled a bit. I know you guys have been cranking.
[avatar]
Not much of a songwriter, but if you need someone on stand-by, you know where to find me!
[avatar]
I'm up for it too, ABD :-) Best of luck in completing said D :-)
[avatar]
@nightwing521 oh no, it's finally happened.... I'm too old to understand an acronym 😩😩
[avatar]
I’m in @carleybaer ! Sounds like a great project.
[avatar]
@carleybaer - I am in for sure and related already to your thesis!
[avatar]
@tjeff
Would love to take part, plz count me in. Great idea for a research project!
[avatar]
I'd love to help out, please add me to the list!
[avatar]
I know that mine is a dissenting opinion on this, so please do sign me up.
[avatar]
yep. happy to help. I feel like I got so much practice writing in 2022 that I’m a much better writer now.
[avatar]
Deffo willing to help out.
[avatar]
I'm in if you want me.
[avatar]
@beacon
I am so up for this!
[avatar]
Sure, I'll be glad to take your survey.
[avatar]
I'd be happy to participate!
[avatar]
@carleybaer An old one, usually used in talking about a doctoral candidate. I had misread your announcement and thought you were talking about a doctoral project. But it's not WRONG to apply it to undergraduate degrees and senior projects. I was referring to YOU as being ...

ABD = "All But Dissertation"
[avatar]
@fuzzy
I'd love to help!
[avatar]
@nightwing521 oh thank goodness! I go to school with kids half my age so I'm always waiting for that moment when the language has outpaced me. Thank you for spelling that out :D
[avatar]
@ben
Not sure if I'm a good candidate, haven't written a lot, especially in recent years but but you said constraint, and one word comes to mind as an example for words:
sonnet.
[avatar]
@nadine
Count me in.
[avatar]
I'm in. 😎
[avatar]
@roddy
Happy to help with this.
[avatar]
@donna
I'd be glad to take part as well.
[avatar]
@lowhum
Sure!
[avatar]
Am happy to take part.
[avatar]
happy to help :)
[avatar]
@leepat
would love to contribute! AND quote your research when it's finished :)
[avatar]
@karan
Happy to contribute to this great project - good luck with everything!
[avatar]
@leepat yesssss that’s my scholarly dream
[avatar]
@erbaer
Count me in! Can I be in the 'lack of control' group?
[avatar]
Count me in! This is a cool idea.
[avatar]
@liz561
I am happy to participate in your survey! I enjoy listening to your music too!
[avatar]
This sounds like the ultimate participant-observer study! I'll be happy to contribute, though of course I already know I'll be an outlier. Just like everyone else.
[avatar]
I'm in
[avatar]
I'm willing to contribute to your study, Carley!
[avatar]
I saw you had lots of volunteers so I didn't say anything but then it occurred to me that you may want more responses for statistical purposes and I'll be happy to help out (or not) as needed.
[avatar]
@tcelliott yes, for statistical purposes, the more, the merrier. The survey will provide the opportunity to go into depth on a variety of topics so I may also follow up with individual participants as circumstances allow. Glad to have you onboard!
[avatar]
I am in as well 😀 if you need more people
[avatar]
Yes please, count me in, sounds super interesting! And totally agree with your central argument :)
[avatar]
Sure, why not. FAWM has been generally very good to me, so I may as well give back to the idea. :) Send the survey along!
[avatar]
I can do a survey for sure.
[avatar]
@yam655
I'd be happy to do the survey.
[avatar]
I agree and happy to help with filling out a survey
[avatar]
I'm happy to do a survey.
[avatar]
I know about those IRB woes all-too-well... Sounds like an awesome project! I'd love to get a link to the survey when it goes out :)
[avatar]
Very cool! Count me in :)
[avatar]
Excellent thesis idea that applies outside music too. I have strong opinions from my experience on this. Love to participate!
[avatar]
Count me in too. And I don't mind being named... or even shamed. My wife says I am a "sinverguenza" already. 😁
[avatar]
Hey, I'd be happy to contribute :)
[avatar]
I'm in 😀
[avatar]
Im down!!
[avatar]
I'd fill out a thing.
[avatar]
Down if you'd take more!
[avatar]
I'd be happy to be surveyed, interviewed and/or quoted.
[avatar]
I'd be happy to help too!
[avatar]
Yes @carleybaer , count me in. Can I bring my Flying Tadpole and his invisible playmates too?
[avatar]
Very happy to help out here @carleybaer!
[avatar]
@brisk
Hello @carleybaer, this sounds really interesting, would love to.
[avatar]
Happy to help out, if you need more answers. 😊
[avatar]
Count me in
[avatar]
@leka
Always happy to help, if needed
[avatar]
I’m in as well
[avatar]
This is already exceeding all my expectations, you all rock! (but we already knew that, you are FAWMers after all). I'm updating the comment further up the thread with folks as they volunteer, just to keep everyone in one place. I've been able to stay on top of it since we're not actually writing yet, but once things get a little crazy, if you don't see your name added to the master list after a day or two, just ping me. And there's still room for more! The larger the data set, the better :)
[avatar]
@carleybaer I think this is a great idea and congratulations on how far you have come. I co-run a songwriting group and introducing FAWM to them when we feel they are ready is always a big step and it usually starts with their utter fear of doing it....LOL It looks like you have more than enough help, but I wanted to say it sounds like a very worthwhile endeavor!!
[avatar]
Count me in too!
[avatar]
I’m in if you need more!
[avatar]
if you still need more people i would be happy to participate!
[avatar]
Likewise, count me in.
[avatar]
Count me in too!
[avatar]
I'm in!
[avatar]
I’m interested. I’ve written thousands of songs. It’s been a constant companion throughout my life. Would love to take part in a study like yours.
[avatar]
@owl
@carleybaer happy to help if you still need it!
[avatar]
Sounds fun. I'm in as well :)
[avatar]
Glad to have all the newcomers onboard! I'm adding everyone to the master comment, but I just realized I missed a few people, so let me know if you don't see your name there. I don't want to overlook anyone!
[avatar]
Sounds interesting! Count me in!
[avatar]
I'd be happy to help out! Both from a personal point of view and from a point of view of when I've taught songwriting, if that's of interest :)
[avatar]
Count me in. 😀
[avatar]
@muz
Count me in too. But this is my first FAWM!
[avatar]
I’m interested.

There is the ICS, based on a book. Monthly, you attempt to write 20 songs in 12 hours. Then they get together and play what they wrote. The book has some research citations on automatic writing, the inner critic, etc. It’s more like a long article with songwriting prompts and strategies filling it out.

[avatar]
The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook
Edit
The songwriting method employed by the ICS is detailed in The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook (ISBN 0-87930-879-6), written by Nicholas Dobson and Karl Coryat and published by Backbeat Books. The book details the philosophy of the ICS and refers to the ICS songwriting system as "Immersion Music Method." Tim Rice-Oxley has said he uses the method to write songs for Keane,[7] and Jez Williams, guitarist for British band Doves, has cited the book as inspiration for their 2009 album Kingdom of Rust.[8][9] Members of the American experimental rock band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and many others have also reported using IMM's "songwriting games" at times to generate material for albums.
[avatar]
I'd be happy to help!

@neverquitjeff - I have that handbook! I found I could totally come up with 10 songs in a day but I kept literally none of them, however I think it helped me bust through the feeling of being blocked - I hadn't written for a year or two at the time and I started up again after spending 10 hours writing 10 songs :)
[avatar]
@carleybaer - I would love to help and just sent you a message on bandcamp.
[avatar]
@muz
I'm happy to contribute. I've never written any songs before I joined FAWM this year and now I have eight. Or rather I tried, and I could never get beyond more than a few lines and those lines were uniformly bad!

[avatar]
Hi there :)
I am very happy to complete the survey and anything else you need for this.
Amanda (sheeaunmusic@gmail.com)
I'm a prof. songwriter and collaborate in almost everything I do.
[avatar]
Hi Carley! I'd love to participate in your survey. I'm in Edmonds WA. I'm not doing FAWM this year due to other Feb commitments, but I've been writing songs most of my life. I love your music.
[avatar]
I'm in too!
[avatar]
Happy to help too
[avatar]
I am interested too! I love the fact that the default take will be anonymous. Count me in! :)
[avatar]
If there's still an opportunity, I'm just finding this out so please accept my entry and feedback if it's still open!
[avatar]
@gslade
@carleybaer - Count me in..I gotchu
[avatar]
Happy to if you would like.
[avatar]
I'm happy to help if I can.
[avatar]
Hi Carley, more than happy to contribute if you would like me to :)

if you're still looking for input, I'll be glad to help too!

Yes! Still accepting people so come one, come all. Soon I’ll go around and collect email addresses from everyone’s pages. If you don’t have one listed, that’s ok, I’ll work it out with you individually (just please stick around until like March 3rd to give me time to chase everyone down!).

Alternately, you can email me at {Carley} at {carleybaer} dot {com}

Thank you all!! I’m so excited :)
[avatar]
I will participate. FOR SCIENCE :)
[avatar]
Really happy to be part of it!
[avatar]
Me too
[avatar]
As the son of a land surveyor, I condone this behaviour.
[avatar]
I’m willing and able to help if needed.
Best of luck!
[avatar]
A massive reason I finally got my Masters was because of all the good people who filled out my survey, so count me in!
[avatar]
@moonraccoon is that a reference to the board game??
[avatar]
@looprication Yes, but only accidentally ;)

Cool handle btw
[avatar]
Happy to participate! I love surveys. I find when I put myself on a songwriting deadline, I'm able to take my ego out of it and focus on the craft. I'm not using songwriting as therapy to process my emotions, instead I'm focusing on building and making something.
[avatar]
@gb9
Not a bona fide songwriter but happy to help.
[avatar]
Sure! I'll fill in the survey. If you need my email, it's on my bio page.
[avatar]
Whew! I've finally gone through to collect email addresses for the questionnaire. If your name is below, I wasn't able to get an email address for you, so you can either email me {carley at carleybaer dot com} with FAWM in the subject line, or send me a message on FB or IG (carleybaer both places), whichever you prefer.

Thank you again for offering your input! I'll be sending out the questionnaire by the end of the week and I can't wait to read the responses.

[avatar]
Send a survey my way…
[avatar]
I'll gladly participate!
[avatar]
I finally sent the survey! And none of the messages bounced back so hopefully you all got it. Instructions and the due date are in the email. Thank you again for providing your wisdom and insights!
[avatar]
@carleybaer - received. Filling it out tomorrow.
[avatar]
I would be happy to count myself in this prestigious list as well.

If you need more count me in!

Got it, done it, sent it back. 😀
