One Instrument Challenge

[avatar]
I had put out the challenge this year to create a whole song using only one sample, manipulated however you like, tagged #onesample (see the One Sample Challenge thread). This is another take on that idea:

Produce a song using only one instrument, and tag it #oneinstrument . Try to be strict about it, but feel free to be creative--drum on your guitar, or sample your drum kit to create a pitched instrument, but only use the one instrument (plus vocals, that's okay). 🙂

One caveat: It doesn't count if it's just a girl-with-guitar or guy-with-piano song. Those are great, don't get me wrong! But for this one you've got to use your instrument more than one way, or at least on more than one track. It just can't be vocal+singleinstrumenttrack.

Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

I'm in for this one. 😎
[avatar]
@dragondreams Yessss! I was hoping you'd join this one.
[avatar]
oh interesting; I've done one sample before, but not just one instrument. I feel like I know what I'd do for a guitar, so maybe I'd pick the bass or drums....I'll ponder on this.
[avatar]
Can I layer my piano? What if I want to play multiple lines of piano underpinnings to vocals? I like this idea a lot, but the piano is my primary instrument and I have ideas.
[avatar]
Oh hell yes. This sounds like a super fun challenge. Let the guiro-ification of the banjo head and lugs begin!
[avatar]
@rwhosings Of course, layer away! Write a piece for 16 hands if you wish, or try your hand at a prepared piano piece. The piano is your oyster.

@abudabard12514 Hahaha, awesome

I am SO there. My viola and me are going to get freaky. ...Musically.
[avatar]
My lil' otamatone says PICK ME.
[avatar]
Way fun, I might try this with more than one song/instrument...
[avatar]
sounds a bit like what people do when they use a loop pedal live, but might be fun if i use it as an excuse to practice with my loop pedal :)
[avatar]
@seanbrennan ooooo, viola, can't wait to hear it!
[avatar]
I can certainly see doing this with one *virtual* instrument.
[avatar]
I'm'n😃
[avatar]
Does synths count? I mean, I feel like it's a bit cheaty😅
[avatar]
I'm in for this. I'm hoping to write some songs in the barbershop style, so....four-part a capella.
[avatar]
@willyviste I see what you’re saying, but it sounds like you’re going in with the right spirit. I say walk the line and let your conscience be your guide on that one. Using one analog synth model to construct every sound (especially using one waveform)? Absolutely! Plugging in a general MIDI keyboard and cycling through presets called “piano” and “strings”….that sound more like cheating to me. Whatever you decide, I hope it leads you to somewhere creative!

@gm7
I have to do this .I think i will use just my Martin acoustic and I will have to come up with some innovative techniques to create a multi track song.
FAWN FUN!!
[avatar]
@clioem
Totally up for this as well!
[avatar]
I've been wanting to do something like this with my Moog Grandmother!
[avatar]
Ooh, I like this a ton! I'm in for sure.
[avatar]
Yep, I'll give this one a whirl
[avatar]
@ani
Does it count if I use a guitar-midi converter?
[avatar]
@scubed
Love it! I’m in.
[avatar]
@ani I’m afraid I’d have to vote no on that one. The MIDI converter basically turns your guitar into a control surface. The only exception would be if you used it to trigger one sound on one device, I guess. Does that make sense? See the question from @willyviste about synthesizers above, I feel like you’re in the same boat there. That would still be really cool!
[avatar]
Ok, I have a song for you. I call it "Lament for Unpopped Popcorn" https://write.fawm.org/songs/14464
[avatar]
Thanks, this did push me to be more creative. Here’s my song.

What about just vocals? Creating all parts, percussion and all with voice?
[avatar]
@leka
A lot of tracks on my viola bass
