I have a problem playing songs by some fawmers and seeing their photo/avatar.

I haven't noticed any problems playing songs (yet), but lots of avatars are missing for me under Chrome on Windows 10. Perhaps oddly, my iPhone and iPad iOS devices are both fine showing the avatars.

EDIT: Nope, I'm wrong, avatars now not showing on on my iOS devices either. Maybe they were cahced before or something.

Apparently there are some issues playing ogg files. Not sure if these were that file type

Same here. My avatar is gone in both Chrome and Edge on my Windows 10 computer, but on my phone everything is fine?

I just checked again. I can't play the music I posted (the play button is greyed out) and my avatar does not show up, just a broken picture link and "[avatar]"

for folks who have missing avatars: do you have a sense that it's random, or that it's, for example, only "custom" avatars that folks have uploaded themselves? the "default" avatars are all weird abstract vaguely musical b&w drawings...

@lowhum as for the audio issues, is it all the songs by those artists, or just some?

@burrsettles Yes, to me I get no custom avatars, but the "default" ones seem to be appearing ok, both on Windows 10 / Chrome and on my iOS devices.
I'm not myself having any problems playing songs from anyone (with or without avatar) at the moment.

EDIT: And I know development sucks... Thank you SO MUCH @burrsettles for everything you do to keep this community running!

SECOND EDIT: Just realized I can play OTHER people's songs, including uploaded to FAWM hosting, but can't play MY OWN (which also are uploaded to FAWM hosting). How will I get through the morning not listening to myself?!?

Update for me: avatar now missing and unable to play my songs on phone either (Samsung Android running Chrome)

For those having these issues... if possible, please try to view/play the avatars/songs using BOTH:

- desktop/laptop web browser on wifi
- a phone NOT on wifi (i.e., using cellular)

and report back if you're having the same behavior both ways

@burrsettles My android phone on wifi, using Chrome, displays all avatars.
My desktop, running Chrome on Windows10, on the same network, is dsiplaying avatars at random. At first I thought it was only custom ones it was not showing, but I can see the ones for @tcelliott and @odilongreen in this thread, but no others.

The same thing seems to be happening with songs: on mobile I can play my own (hosted on the FAWM site) but on the desktop the music player for my own songs is greyed out.

...whereas I am experiencing absolutely no issues on either my laptop (Windows 10) or my phone.

Hey @burrsettles, I don't know if you were able to find anything or the internet gods decided to act in their mysterious ways, but now everything is working again: avatars are there, my songs play, and all is right with the world!

@odilongreen How strange. Still the same problem for me. And I've rebooted, and tried it on MS Edge but to no avail...

@sapient I did change physical locations by several miles in between the two tests. Same computers / iOS devices in both places, with radically different results. But the ISP in both places was the same (albeit the problem was with Comcast Business, and it's working fine under Comcast (Xfinity) At Home). Very strange!

@burrsettles, I find that I cannot play most files hosted on FAWM (some do play, for example @dragondreams, no idea why). I hope you'll be able to find the cause! Fingers crossed! 😀

@karan can you share the link of a song that doesn't work for you, and which OS you're using, which browser, and if you're on wifi or cell?

@burrsettles - I don't see anyone's avatar here in this forum, and I only get the spinny ball on the player, looks like external links are working for audio. I host mine on my server and I can play mine.
I'm on Mac laptop OS 12.6.3 trying with Safari 16.3, Chrome 109.0.5414.119 and Firefox 108.0.2 (64-bit).

@elesimo, I am on a Windows laptop (but connected via cable), using Firefox; I had trouble with quite a lot of songs from different fawmers, including this one https://write.fawm.org/songs/14525, but now it works again. How strange!

Avatars have been working just fine for me, but just now some of them started bugging out. I still see a lot of custom ones, so maybe they're the default ones? idk

YEP — this is affecting everyone right now.

avatars and FAWM-hosted MP3s have vanished. the ones you're seeing are the ones in your browser's cache. it appears to have something to do with our hosting service.

on hold with tech support for the hosting provider to figure out what's happening.

Just happened to me, about 1/3 of avatars not displaying (only the overlay color) on my iPhone safari browser. Seems like mostly custom ones but I don’t recall what everyone had before. Hadn’t had any issues before this. Music players seem to be working though. I can try to send screens later if that helps.

Hope your hosting provider can get this straightened out, and that they haven't lost anything. It's definitely the FAWM-hosted stuff that's impacted. Going off to check to see if anyone on my watchlist has non-FAWM-hosted stuff to listen to for now.

Having the same problem. I got on today & listened to 1 song, then went to go listen to another & it wouldn't play. Avatars are missing as well.

those of you who reported problems early on (e.g., @lowhum @odilongreen @sdcpaman @karan @sapient) are the avatar/demo issues resolved now, or are you still experiencing problems? my hope is that it related to the hosting outage (https://write.fawm.org/forums/899) that seems to be fixed, but if not we will continue to investigate...

@burrsettles My phone still does not show avatar or allow me to play songs I posted yesterday. I tried clearing cache and browser history on chrome on my phone, but no difference. Your avatar does not show up on my phone. Thanks for all your help trying to resolve this!

@burrsettles - Mine has been working again for maybe 20 minutes or more.

@sdcpaman Try opening the phone browser in private mode in case you still had something cached.

No songs and no avatars for me.

@slusk in incognito mode in Chrome on my phone and unfortunately same result; no avatars and cannot play music.

@sdcpaman Weird. Reboot the phone unless you already have tried that. Turn off WIFI and run over 4G or 5G or whatever your operator supplies - or the other way around depending on your initial settings.

@slusk no luck. Rebooted phone, getting to FAWM through cell service or through wifi, in regular browser or incognito mode all results in the same for me, no avatar and music unavailable.

Experiencing the same issue. Changed browsers, changed internet sources, erased history/cookies/images, flushed dns, changed my socks... nothing helped.

@autoclamp do you mean issues with avatar, song, or both?

@burrsettles and @elesimo Back online on my studio desktop where I was having problems yesterday. Have cleared my Chrome cache and logged back into FAWM and I am still missing all custom avatars and I still can't play my own songs that are hosted through the site.

@burrsettles I've just checked proposed solution: hosted songs don't play from desktop (windows10, Chrome/Edge) and play with no issues from iphone SE (both wifi and mobile traffic).

Weirdly, things are working fine in Chrome on my work computer, but on my personal computer and my phone, I'm still unable to see anyone's custom avatar or play FAWM-hosted songs. I started having issues on these devices around 5pm EST yesterday. I've logged out and back in and cleared caches and switched browsers and tried incognito windows and still can't get it to work. Was totally convinced it had to be an issue tied to my user somehow until I logged into work this morning and was able to listen on this computer. 😕 I'll keep trying different things after work today. @burrsettles and @elesimo thanks for all your hard work, and let me know if there's anything else in particular you think I should try! (Edited to add: I just tried downloading a totally different, fresh browser onto my phone. Same issue - can't see custom avatars and can't listen to most songs. Makes me wonder if there's some tie to IP address or something? Grateful I can still access from my work laptop, at least, and it's not a huge deal as it seems most people aren't having this problem.)

@nicetrip Yup, that's exactly how I'm experiencing things still.

I suspect that the service provider is still working on fixing their hosting outage; I was seeing songs and avatars come and go an hour or so ago, so things may be sporadic until they've finished working on the problem.

And yeah, I just struggled to post that last comment, so they've still got issues...

@headfirstonly I had a full, but brief outage on the whole site about an hour ago.
But now it looks like everything is back... songs, avatars, the lot.

Okay, the fix for me seems to hinge on a DNS filtering tool we have been using in our router (cleanbrowsing). I turned that off and we have no issues now. I also tried OpenDNS, and that also works fine.

When the issue was happening, any link from the dream.io was inaccessible (including custom avatars and FAWM-hosted songs) but the default avatars (hosted by fawm.org) and self-hosted songs worked just fine (as did Soundcloud and YouTube links). I did a quick reputation check on dream.io (in mxtoolbox and talos) and no red flags were raised, so I'm not sure why that particular DNS filtering service was making it a problem.

I was able to recreate and re-solve the problem, but flushing the dns in my computer was a must each time.

It looks like Kaspersky is also blocking access to some of the files hosted in dream.io. 😞

It seems my issue had something to do with Verizon connecting to dream.io (I have Verizon as my phone and internet provider). I installed a VPN on my home computer, phone, and iPad and all is well now.

My computer windows 11 is showing all the avatars and playing all the music including my own. My cell phone however is not.
I see very few avatars including my own and I cannot play my own music unless it's a collab that goes to sound cloud

@sunnymae - do you have Verizon as your phone provider? I do and I see this issue on my phone when not on WiFi.

@jlampson Yes!!! I do have Verizon. Thanks for the tip I will try it now with my Wi-Fi on and see if it makes any difference.

Well that didn't seem to make a difference so I guess I'm still in that percentile that's having trouble but thank you so much for chiming in!
Hopefully someone will figure it out before too long cuz I'm on the road in my car an awful lot and it's my only way to stay connected to FAWM.

@alyxanderjames I'm having the exact same problem you are and tried all the same things. Still nothing. 🤔

@sunnymae - oh that's unfortunate that it didn't work. I have Comcast/Xfinity for home Internet so that's my ISP while on wireless at home. So weird that this is happening, but then there are things like BGP that exist that I understand exactly zero because they are so magical.

Okay, so I put the more restrictive DNS filtering that was causing the problems back on my router, and found that the avatars DO work and the file hosting does NOT work... which I think is the exact result you're looking for. Whatever you're doing indeed made the avatars visible. Nice work!

Yay... I can see the avatars but still no music Unless it's from an outside source. Thank you guys for everything you're trying to do to fix this.

@burrsettles - yes to avatars. When I try to access music files it's not working. I've tried backing out the objects url to gauge where in the node tree it's failing and once I try to access dream.io it finally resolved. I'm game to try all sorts of things up help troubleshoot further!

@burrsettles it seems my issue is now very specific. The only person's avarat that isn't loading is yours! 🤪
Other than that, it all looks OK...

@sunnymae - awesome for your issues (and mine) getting fixed. Hell of a team of passionate folks working on making this all happen. It's easy to forget that they are all "music nerds" like us who are working for free on this site for thousands of people, working for a living like many of us in general, and then also trying to write 14 songs this month! They're my heroes for sure!
