My approach to time signatures barely makes it beyond 1/2 time

I spent ages trying to figure the time signature of this one. Eventually settled on 6/8 however, the occurrence of the second chord in the chorus doesn't quite fit this.

I started the month with 5/4 song. It took some effort to make it flow pleasantly rather than sounding one beat too long or one beat too short. I'm rather fond of 7/8 as well, but haven't made a song utilizing it yet this year.

Being a fan of Progressive rock, I love those strange time sigs!
I used to build songs with multiple time signatures all going at the same time.
I haven't done that for a while...

One of my goals in life is to write a ragtime piano piece in the style of Scott Joplin, but in 5/4 time.
![[avatar]](https://avatars.fawm.org/fawm2023/20136.png)
I’ve just done one in 5/8, 6/8 and 4/4 with a tempo change thrown in for good measure. https://write.fawm.org/songs/15087#c53473 I’ll add the tag!

I've somehow ended doing 7/8 and 9/8 songs in every fawm this far. Somehow it's really easy to make up a riff with a effortless feel, but second guessing starts as soon as I need to write or perform drums or vocals.
![[avatar]](https://avatars.fawm.org/fawm2023/26622.png)
I sometimes end up using odd signatures, but I dunno how I got there. I always wanted to try 7/8 because its one that feels super jarring and uncomfortable to me. Any idea how to start? Or do these things just happen?
![[avatar]](https://avatars.fawm.org/fawm2023/29415.png)
I just posted a contribution in 11/8. I've been using odd time signatures all my life, both for prog rock and for Eastern European traditional dance music.

Now that I think about it, last year I did a slip jig, which is an Irish jig but in 9/8 time. Quite a few people comented that they had never heard of such a thing. While it's not common, it's not exactly rare, and in my ind it's not quite as "odd" as 5/8 or 7/8.
![[avatar]](https://avatars.fawm.org/fawm2023/29415.png)
@tuneslayer, there's 9/8 and then there's 9/8. When it's a slip jig, it gets counted and played as three beats to a measure, so it is more of a "normal" meter. But when it's a Bulgarian daichovo it's divided up as 2,2,2,3, putting it in the odd meter camp.

@johnpeekstok very true, or even weirder would be 2-3-2-2. I occasionally have fun listening to rhythms like that, or 7/8 or 11/8 or even 5/4, and wondering quite kind of dances could be done to those time signatures.

Hey all! I started my FAWM off with a moody piece using a 7/4 time signature, and I also tried a bit of polymeter at the end using 4/4, 3/4, and 7/8.

Thanks for making the thread! I'm glad to see other people enjoy wacky time signatures. I have a lot of fun with challenging myself to make something that sounds both unsettling and catchy.

I came into this FAWM wanting to write a "hip hop" flavored track with a rap I liked as I'd never done it before, then told a friend I wanted to do it in 5/4 just for fun. And voila! Only 1:24 long, and lyrically self-referential... Five Finger Finger Discount.

I’m doing a bunch of trad sounding material this year, and Irish slip jigs are in 9/8 so I might do one of those, but I don’t really think it counts as “odd” if it’s a traditional form … especially because 9/8 is just three triplets per bar.
Maybe I should figure out how to do a reel in 5/4 or something. That sounds super hard … but I’ve done 6/4, 6/8, 9/8, 10/4, and 7/4 at various times in FAWMs past even with relatively folky material so hey let’s try to fill in the 5 gap.

Today I added a piece, "Greek Gigue," in 7/8 time: https://write.fawm.org/songs/17674
Coming from a Greek background, 7/8 feels natural to me. I just added the tag after finding this thread.

It's not a steady odd time signature, but in the bridge I ran into a phrase that wasn't working. So I made it work by forcing triplets for a bar, then going a bit prog with a repeating chord progression playing 3+3+2+2.
That's all an insurance adjuster needs anyway ;)

Just uploaded another one! This one is a short instrumental piece that's going to lead into another song. Both this one and the other are in 11/4. It surprised me how easy it was to make something that sounded good to me, if a bit rhythmically strange.

I've got a waltz all done and ready to record, if I can figure out how.
I also just started working on something experimental where some of the instrument tracks are playing 4 beats per measure while others are playing 3, and they switch between them at different times. That one won't be getting done this month though.

@erikleppen dont know if you noticed but the number in the song url totals up to 7/8 if you add it a certain way = 15117 ( 5+1+1 and 7+1 ) bit tenuous, but a lil interesting considering you mention it being mostly 7/8 is what made me check lol
![[avatar]](/static/img/avatars/init/08.png)
Also, this may be a stupid question, but is there a way of accidentally falling into a time signature by swapping and exchanging notes to an excessive amount ?
I am intrigued by polyrhythms , are these also odd time signatures or something else ?
When I started to learn music I was convinced both by someone and by my own excitement to make music in 7/8 by throwing in a bar or two here or there that fits that rhythm. However now I don’t fully know when a 4/4 bar starts and ends when I naturally flip into this weird thing

@chldomn5 Polyrhythms are multiple rhythms played simultaneously. In some cases, it's just a matter of being able to count something multiple ways. 12/8 (and 6/8) are extremely common polyrhythms where the rhythms can be counted as 4 triplets (for 12/8, or two triplets for 6/8) or as 12 eighth notes. Sometimes multiple instruments literally play in different time signatures in each bar.
An odd time signature is just what people call having a number of beats other than what is typical. Usually a song is only described as being in an odd time signature if the whole thing is in an odd time signature. Temporarily switching time signatures to accommodate an extra note or two of the melody at the end of, say, the last line of a chorus for a song that's otherwise a steady four quarter notes to the bar is pretty common but it's not what people usually mean. Some songs switch their time signature all time time so that they're actually playing in an odd time signature but it's easier to count to three or four than to five or seven or 19. Like if you are constantly in one song playing a bar of 4/4 followed by a bar of 3/4, you're playing in 7/4.

This one has verses that switch between 7/4 and 8/4, a bridge in 4/4 and a chorus in 6/4. I'm annoyed with myself now that I didn't slip in a wee 5/4 section to complete the set...

"Odd" in the mathematical sense as 5, 7, 9 beats to the measure, but anything goes that's out of your standard 4/4 or 6/8! Or even if it is 4/4 or 6/8, but mixed, or used in an unusual way. So, let's count to 5 and get those odd beats going, and post your songs here! I have noticed the tag #odd_time_signature is already going round, so let's use that!
I'm adding https://write.fawm.org/songs/15117 Life at the pond in the mix, which is mostly 7/8 but also has occasional measures at 8/8, 6/8 or 4/8, and somehow a 9/8 ending.
I have this hunch that these time signatures start sounding more and more natural when I use them more. Especially 5-based measures are some that I use more often nowadays. These odd time signatures are very interesting because there's so many ways to split them up: 5 can be 3+2 or 2+2+1, etc. Lots of rhythmic variety possible!
So, post your #odd_time_signature songs here and discuss :)
