Something a wee bit dark perhaps? This fellow is seeing things and slipping away. Oh, and he wants to take you with him!

Crawling

Lately I've been seein'
spiders crawling
in the corners of my eyes
I am surprised
No one else can see them
spiders crawling
on my pillow there's no doubt
I guess I'm freaking out

I may be slipping
into a new reality
one that you don't know about
and one you cannot see
I may be falling
into a thing you might call a dream
I am so frightened
I'm so frightened
I don't even dare to scream

Today I'm someone else
and I am crawling
through the routine of my day
you're in my way
you may not recognize me
I am crawling
through the winds of space and time
shifting paradigms

I may be slipping
into a new reality
one that you don't know about
and one you cannot see
I may be falling
into a thing you might call a dream
I am so frightened
I'm so frightened
I don't even dare to scream

give me your hand
I'll take you with me
don't run away
we'll both be free
this is the path
I've chosen now
we'll learn to fly
I'll show you how

I may be slipping
into a new reality
one that you don't know about
and one you cannot see
I may be falling
into a thing you might call a dream
I am so frightened
I'm so frightened
I don't even dare to scream

I am really hearing, and feeling, that bass! Great bass playing! Really nice production on this, and your voice is perfect. There's a lot of energy and anxiety here, and the lyrics drew me right in to all of that.

@katmtl
Wooow! I love your voice and the awesome guitar sounds!😎

Ooh, great melody on this blues-rock number. Love the organ and guitar solos in particular. The lyrics are dark, but not too disturbing--a creative exploration of the descent into mental illness.

Oooh! Deliciously dark and creepy! Well done! 🖤

Love this, John! Dark but deep and moving. Descriptive and raw, it's like watching a movie while listening to the song.
We've been rewatching Deadwood and this absolutely reminds me of the tragic descent of the preacher (he has a brain tumor and witnessing his decline is heartbreaking 💔).
You are so very talented.

Great shuffle drums and bass. The reverb on the vocal is great. Loving the organ, rhythm guitar, and the lead guitar solos.

I love a good old bluesy structure. It allows you to just let loose on the soloing, and to give it your all vocally.

Now I hope I don’t have any nightmares thinking about your own multiverse opening up, although I’m sure that a John Staples multiverse would be better than most peoples!

I could work on a song for months and not have it sound this good! I can't believe people create these things into February - it has a very classic rock/Americana/Bluesy vibe. Beautifully played and delivered.

I LOVE This track and production. Making the fears all spiders...such a great idea and written so well. Awesome vocal...this is amazing!!!

Oooh this is bluesy awesomeness. Really powerful imagery of life's struggles too. Really like the guitar solos. Cracking vocal too.

My daughter’s been reading Kafka’s the Metamorphisis. This song feels like it could be Gregor Samsa’s theme song in Kafka the musical. Great work.

Slipping into a new reality. Great lyrics and very well performed. Nicely done JS!

This may be a little too bluesy for him, but I think this would make a tremendous Alice Cooper slower song / ballad, along the lines of Welcome to My Nightmare (and I'm a tremendous Alice Cooper fan from his start through today, so I mean that as a sincere compliment)! Cool and dark and just so very seductive.

Oh hello lead guitar - nicely done!! Love the effects on your vocals (I think it increases as the song progresses) and your voice as always sounds amazing. The song concept is something I have not heard before but is so relatable. You really nailed it and in such a cool way. The crawling concept is perfect - and evokes such a strong image of someone really struggling. Seeing spiders no one else can see, and the revelation that no one else can, becoming frightened - and then clinging to the person in their life that makes them feel safe and then taking them down with them. This song is the perfect marriage between stellar lyrics, the perfect genre, memorable cool melodies, a great instrumental track and a dynamite performance. Wowza!

If you are trying to give us all nightmares you are doing it really well. Congrats on a terrific song. Hope your own dreams are less frightening.

Sick guitar riffs, like the slap back vocals, shifting paradigms ::chefs kiss::

Hmmm...I've never written a song myself about spiders crawling in the corners of my eyes. Now I almost feel like I HAVE to!

Another classic Staples tune. (By the way, did you listen to the recent @coolparadiso podcast interview of me? We made a passing reference to you...)

Keep 'em coming! I enjoyed this one--although now I'll probably have trouble getting to sleep tonight.

@mikeb
Love that lead guitar right at the start! A sad (and scary) 'slipping into insanity' lyric!

Enjoyed this song a lot. Very nice playing and production.

Oh Hell Yeah!!! Dude I know you said blues wasn't your favorite genre, but it IS one of mine and this song my brother, is superb in every way. If I could have a band and perform in public, this is EXACTLY the kind of songs I'd wanna be playing. (I'd wanna be that guy on the crunchy blues lead guitar)
No other genre has such soul and raw emotion, The mix between blues and rock is magic and sweeps me away to my happy place!!
That sweet crunched blues lead is exquisite and you've played it in all the right places. I love the melody you've written.... So catchy and so smooth...different yet classic.
Your voice on this song is among the best performances I've ever heard from you... like it or not John, your voice is PERFECT for the blues!!! It might be just me, but I hear Elvis in there... you know, great timbre, soothing and spot-on. A voice that would stand up without any accompaniment.
As I listen for the 4th time, I hear an awesome bass in the mix... Great job on that too... the bass line is very critical to a good blues tune. Well this is a Great blues tune.... Awesome job my friend!!

Great arrangement and performance John.

totally original take on underbelly blues-rock, if syd barrett had been born in the USA, he might have wound up somewhere around here.

Hell YEAH. This is all shades of fantastic!

@clioem
This is really dark, and amazing. Great melody, accompaniment and kit. The lyrics are evocative and really in fitting in the style. I love the minor chords with major 6 extension in the last chorus!

@johns
Oh man, this is just great. Love it.

The Blues will always get me and this has a country rock bluesy vibe - what a hot combo! I can taste the beer, smell the cologne on my new dance partner, and feel the wee hours of the morning beckoning me. My favorite song I've heard so far this FAWM.
[avatar]
Im hooked on the intro! Oh mate the hoochie cooch has been loose! Love it . The rock organ never misses! Class mate!

@chroes
Gorgeous. What a song to wake up to and listening over my headphones in bed... 😬 I really enjoyed how you processed guitars and bass, the vocals too. Maybe just the tiniest bit less autotuning, this song can definitely deal with some bendy vocals imho!

@quork
Great blues!And deliciously freaky.
