Lyrics

There was a girl, her name Selene

Her favorite day was Halloween

She said she was a pageant queen

By the time she was fourteen

And God she was pretty, cause she was so kind

Her eyes shined like embers, like stars in the sky
Her body told stories of things we can’t see

Selene, Selene

Her father was a working man,

But got drunk when he’d can
Oh Selene, she lived in fear

She wanted to get outta here

I said, “we can find another place

He won’t find us for days

I think we should runaway”

Her eyes began to luminate
She was gonna seal her fate
She said, “Come and pick me up at eight”

But when I biked up to her house

There’s caution tape, all around
And silence filled all the sounds
There’s teddy bears on the streets

Everyone shuffling their feet

Talking about Selene

I wished I could save her, cause she was so kind

Her eyes shined like embers, like stars in the sky
Her body told stories of things we can’t see

Selene, Selene

Oh, Selene

i am *always* on the hunt for genuinely good story songs, but i don't need to hunt for a while after finding this one, my god. what you've done here is remarkable. i'm in awe.

this is so frighteningly horrible,,,and sickeningly common. yet you make something so gorgeous from it. in the veing of suzanne vega's luka, but i think your song is better. luka seemed like a symbol, while selene is tragically individual. your voice is awesome and you use it sparingly, for dynamic empahasis, not meaningless show. and the musical backing is like ravels bolero in its inexorable march to the inevitable tragedy

Gorgeous - "talking about (pause) Selene" is so powerful, a mourning cry right after the lines about caution tape and teddy bears

Favorite line: "Her body told stories of things we can’t see" So well said on a sensitive topic.

How beautiful! Your voice is gorgeous and so is the melody you've created here. I especially like this line: "And God she was pretty, cause she was so kind." Stellar work!
