thirty thousand feet

Liner Notes

These lyrics just moved me to remember the death of my own father, which happened about the same time as Liz's father passing. We collaborated on a song back then " Photos Of My Father". That supplied words to my own feelings of loss and emptiness. And here we are again. Thanks, Liz.

Liz says: a thousand thanks, Eric, for your tenderness as you brought these words to life. Your music makes the words reach deeper into my heart and bring a tear to my eye. I’m sorry about the loss of your father and I treasure the songs you have done with me as we cherish the memories of our dads.

Lyrics

looking at the pale moon
as it rises high
bright above the thick clouds
we just flew through

the stars shine so softly
in vast darkness
I see one that is brighter
it must be you

at thirty thousand feet
I think about you
at thirty thousand feet
I sense you next to me
at thirty thousand feet
I feel a little closer…
to the heavens where
you watch over me

last time I flew down here
it was to see you
we watched horses graze as
the gold sun set

you said that you felt older
tired and sore
but weren’t ready for good byes
no not just yet

at thirty thousand feet
I think about you
at thirty thousand feet
I feel you next to me
at thirty thousand feet
I feel a little closer…
to the heavens where
you watch over me

if I knew then what I know now is true
about how much I care and miss you
would I have showed you more love?
or shared more time with you?

C
at thirty thousand feet
I think about you
at thirty thousand feet
I feel you next to me
at thirty thousand feet
I feel a little closer…
to the heavens where
you watch over me

I just came from listening to deb's version and was thinking, nothing could match that. But here it is, another beautiful treatment of Liz's poignant lyrics. I particularly like the repetition in the Chorus (thanks, Liz) and the whole mood of love and loss and hope. Nice work, all.

@debs
This had me at the opening chord; it instantly set the mood as longing, contemplative and mellow. The performance/production is amazing - it sounds fantastic and the simple treatment with just guitar/vocals is exactly what it needs. The whole thing is so emotional and just utterly wonderful.

(I'm struck by the similarities between our two versions; these lyrics really do lend themselves to a waltz, don't they. :) You made some really cool phrasing decisions I never would have thought of, like that little pause between "you" and "watch" in the chorus.)

This is heartbreaking. The performance is so emotional. It's like the right people work together and do perfection.

I like this one a lot. Perfect mood for Liz’s great lyrics. Warm and relatable without being overly sentimental. You’ve got such a nice voice and easy-going style. Great collab!

Beautifully heartbreaking. I really love what both of you did here. Eric, your voice is perfect for this, and Liz, beautiful lyrics.

Such a beautiful song and another amazing collaboration. What really got me was the pacing of the bridge, highlighting the discomfort of drawing out such painful questions. Thank you both for sharing.

Gods, your voice is magic. Love the spare guitar playing, nothing extra. This is lovely.

I really like the way you play with the rhythm in the chorus, shifting the "to" in "closer to" so that it creates an internal rhyme with "about you". Also what mic are you using on the guitar? I really like that sound. You did a great job putting these words to music. Definitely got me in the feels :)
