THE CAPTAIN

Liner Notes

I'm staying in a house in Aotearoa on Waiheke Island, there's an old warm banjo hanging on the wall in GDAD tuning, capo 1 - which is how it was on the wall so I just noodled around with 2 chords and sang whatever came out.

Written in about 60 minutes so I'm happy with this as a first draft, good to plant the seed and see if it grows into anything. Could hear a lonesome fiddle solo come in, i've left space at the end however if I was to grow the song might swap the verses 3 & 4 around and then write further verses.

Good to play around on an instrument I don't usually play, in a house I've never stayed in before, in a place I've never been before! This island is magical. Let's see what the old Piano/Guitar/Mandolin have to say tomorrow - here for the weekend on tour so it's wonderful to capture the magic of this place through FAWM.

Lyrics

I’m not the only one that you love
Starving and begging for scraps and drips

I clutch at your robe and kiss your feet
Coz I believe

Oo ooo

I’m all alone with my books unread
Waiting on you to reply somehow

I am a captive with no chains
Bound to a Captain with no name for me

Maybe tomorrow you’ll see

Spare and haunting, like the best old folk. Lovely stuff.

Loving this. The phrasing and the sustained vocal lines are really interesting. Atmospheric sounds in a stunning setting. What a dreamy experience. Great work.

The banjo sounds great. "Starving and begging for scraps and drips" is a great line. I enjoy the emotional delivery. Hat to look up where Waiheke Island is, you are New Zealand! Greetings from Germany:-)

Ooh this is so haunting and old-worldly. It definitely gives me the vibe of being on a ship on the sea all alone. What a stunning start! And…. BANJO!!! Xo

wow- this is powerful and evocative. really strong lyric and intense vocal -with that slow melody, and the great banjo accompaniment, it really does the lyric justice- great work! looking forward to hearing more! (and makes me want to get out my old half broken banjo )

Lovely singing and the lyrics took me on a journey. Well done on the unfamiliar tuned instrument improv!

Wonderful! I love how the lyrics are sad, while the music sounds hopeful. And the banjo is nice. I imagine adding some shakers and bongos to groove along maybe :)

Holy crunk, these lyrics are gorgeous - sparse but so emotive! Your voice is so strong and clear, and I love the melody - I think you're in mixolydian mode? Which is fricking awesome... Just beautiful, such longing, I can't wait for your next song!

That banjo just sets up a beautiful space immediately and that sparse lyric is Just. So. Evocative! I particularly love the couplet
"I’m all alone with my books unread
Waiting on you to reply somehow"
Books unread - that says so much. And that change of chord is exquisite!! YAAAAAY! I'm so glad you are on FAWM with us this year. :)
