Lyrics

My Pet Amoeba

My pet Amoeba
it’s my favorite protozoa
at least from among all the ones that I know of
in a sample of water from the Shenandoah
I’m going to keep it forever

I like how it has no cell wall
and stretches out a pseudopod when it wants to crawl
My friends are concerned and tell me there’s no hope
because I’ll always have to carry a microscope

I have to tell you
But that is really a small price to pay
for a friend that will listen to everything you say
Oh how we laugh, oh, how we play!
My pet Amoeba

(instrumental)

one of nature’s finest designs
all swirls and curls and no straight lines
The way it looks up to me makes my heart swell
How can so much love fit into a single cell?

My pet Amoeba
It’s all ooey and gooey
Its insides look like a bowl of chop suey
I’m going take it with me on my trip to St. Louie
My pet Amoeba

My pet Amoeba
Sadly, I had to let it go
or maybe it ran away, I don’t know
We’ll always have St. Louie, so there you go
My pet Amoeba

This is so sweet! I was drawn in by the title, but this is lovely. I love that you whistle. Songs like this are a gem <3

That is one fine whistling solo! I always read through the lyrics before listening to a new song, and I guffawed a couple times reading this. Even better with the music!

I love it.
"I’ll always have to carry a microscope
I have to tell you that's a small price to pay
for a friend that will listen to everything you say"
So good!

A song about a pet amoeba has no business being this entertaining or adorable.

Just kidding, it has every right.

So many good rhymes here! The “know’uh” rhyming with “Protozoa” and “Shenandoah” is top notch. I want a pet amoeba now too.

I think maybe SchoolHouseRock needs to create a new Science series and lead with this one. I gotta get me one of those amoebas. And then to let it go...how sad. Hope it's happy somewhere. Great write.

Somehow I wasn't prepared for a song about an amoeba to be so ... jaunty! With whistling! And it's witty too. You've got some great images here, particularly when the AAAB scheme makes you reach into the (comparatively) ridiculous for the third line. Cracking wee tune.

Very creative. :)

Well, this is a toe-tapping delight! As others have mentioned, your rhymes are so clever, tinged with (or possibly soaked in) lots of fun humor. Nice casual delivery, too!

Fun song to listen to. Clever lyrics, lovely, easy going music, vocals, playing. I like your whistling too. All works a treat to listen to. I like the shift in the tempo. Delightgful take on a skirmish prompt.

Another Shenandoah mention in the same skirmish!! I don't know why I wanted to mention it today, it might just be a contrasting complex rhyme with 'go' and the fact that songs already exist, I've played a lot of endless ocean! Either that or the strange psychic energies of FAWM! Lol. Another topic, forever chemicals, came up both with me and somewhere else today! Anyway, sorry. Not very relevant perhaps. Amoebas, slime moulds, lichen - I love all the exciting little worlds like that. But also acknowledge the mixed impression they give off, if unfairly.

Who would think to rhyme protozoa with Shenandoah? The entire lyric is so clever and fun - and so is the music!
[avatar]
Ahaha, this is hilarious. "We'll always have St. Louie" had me cracking up. Very clever, love your rhyme schemes as always!

@tjeff
Love the rhymes of protozoa, know of, and Shenandoah!! Those are really good, and you worked them into a lyric in such a creative way. Fun tune, and excellent take on the prompt!! I really like the easy-going nature of the guitar and vocal.

Amazing! The instrumental and bridge are to die for. Great job!
[avatar]
You should release this on a split EP (y'know, cos amoebas...). Good track. A lot of fun.

@beacon
This was so fun. I love the protozoa-know of rhyme. Genius! This reminds me of Christine Lavin's Amoeba Hop.

I can tell you're having a fun, fun FAWM and you're making mine fun, too. I look forward to every song that you post! Now I'm hungry for chop suey...

@wacha
This is very catchy and a lot of fun, I love the whistling in the instrumental. What a clever take on the prompt, it would be easy to play this one as silly but you deliver it so straight that it comes off as fun and heartfelt. Really nice work!
[avatar]
what a delightful take on the prompt - how much love in a single cell is inspired, the whole concept is inspired, and a lovely catchy setting of it. some great imagery and rhymes. and WHISTLING solo, what a fun skirmish! love it well done :)

The laid-back vibe of this combined with the mild obsession with our single-celled friend just hits right today. I think if science textbooks had a soundtrack this should be on it. My condolences on the loss of your pet!

@chroes
Mh, lovely song, such a cute take! And performed with such ernest, despite of the ridiculous subject. Hehe. 🙃
[avatar]
A friend of mine (Dr. Chordate) writes science songs (mainly) and this would fit right into the whole "cool song that informs" take. I couldn't help but smile while listening.
[avatar]
Really enjoyed this one! I think you can be confident that you're the first to rhyme "protozoa" and "Shenandoah" in a one-hour song challenge. Favorite couplet: "My friends are concerned and tell me there’s no hope/because I’ll always have to carry a microscope"
[avatar]
Thanks for the smile with this one. fun and light and silly!

@roxya
Love the tongue in cheek vibe of this. Definitely worth carrying a microscope around for, I mean, my pet Amoeba.
[avatar]
Such creative writing!! I just love the words you chose to rhyme. Incredibly clever!!
[avatar]
omg what a fun concept! the rhyming of amoeba & protozoa right at the beginning is way cool. 😄 i hope someone sets this to music!
[avatar]
Lol Very creative approach. Really good writing.
