The Lynching Tree

by @mattwdunn

Liner Notes

After not having any initial plans for FAWM this year it now seems that I'm working on 2 albums or maybe a double album. One side 'rock' and the other more laid back.

This is a straight ahead rock track to balance out the quiet, contemplative songs I've been writing the last few days.

Lyrics

Go to sleep, half eaten, discarded apple
Watch Snow White for the millionth time

Black and white, technicolour, 1937
Cyanide, sweetened tongues, 1937

Cold shoulders of love
Kings and papers burn
Life is footsteps in the fog
Or picnics around the lynching tree

The birth of the modern age where no one talks
Language is dead evolving to grow thumbs

Black and white, technicolour, 1937
Cyanide, sweetened tongues, 1937

Cold shoulders of love
Kings and papers burn
Life is footsteps in the fog
Or picnics around the lynching tree

Cold shoulders of love
Kings and papers burn
Life is footsteps in the fog
Or picnics around the lynching tree

A hero or villain
So clever and disgusting
A builder or a wrecking ball
Are we innocent or are we guilty?

Niiice. Love the opening guitar riff. The lyrics are really cool. Great imagery. Great to hear some awesome heavy rock.

Duuude, this is banging! Love the half-time on the chorus. That solo is a ripper.

After having seen the movie about Billie Holliday and her song, "Strange Fruit", my mind immediately hones in on the line, "or picnics around the lynching tree". 1937, not really all that long ago, My great-grandmother and grandma were there. Hopefully, we've come further out of those times. Very thought-provoking piece and the delivery was well-done.

I'm in such a dark frame of mind right now I couldn't pass up the chance to enjoy a song called The Lynching Tree, and I'm damn glad I did. Had me right from the first sweep of the guitars. Lovely big arrangement, cracking chorus. I'm well into this.

Damn son - you are making your mark on this FAWM already and its only been week 1!! i am playing super catch up, and this has just blasted the cobwebs clear. a great vibe to this, foot tapping and head bobbing for sure - agree with @ampersandman about repeating the '1937' in the back ground there somewhere

Great rocker! Builds up easily nicely and a very unusual tropic for a rock song.

"Language is dead evolving to grow thumbs" true dat.

This is a banger. The opening riff is so good! Reading the lyrics I was wondering how the repeated '1937' would work in a song, it absolutely does. Great guitar work!

yeah rock from the lyrics and rock from the first note . I think i will be like you one rocky one mellow. for some reason i like numbers/years in songs like 1937. very good song indeed

I'm not much of a rocker anymore, but I can certainly appreciate when it's well done. This cut sounds radio ready. Call up your favourite DJ and turn it loose on the world.

The riff in the verse is incredible. Sounds like you're really in your rhythm in this one, can't wait to hear what else you put on the album/albums!

Wow this rocks hard! That solo, jeez man! The lyrics are absolutely sensational too, they really elevate the track. Love how high you push the guitars in the mix, it’s ballsy and it works! Wowzers.

That... half time? chorus works really well - not sure how it is achieved, and gives it a different feel. Love that cryptic prechorus lyric. Love the boost the harmonies give too. Another really nice one (love the guitar sound on this too).

I'm with Bill on this one. This has a real Wishbone Ash feel. They were one of my favourite bands in the early 70s. I am a history buff, but your references are oblique and could apply to quite a few incidents in that year. For me 1937 screams "Spanish Civil War."

your sweet, poppy vocals hold their own against the loud, distorted guitars. i like hearing raging hard rock with voices that sing rather than scream.
