Choose the Sun

Liner Notes

Yes, another song about light and darkness. Geez, I wasn't trying for a theme this year. This one's a bit more story-ish. Still tweaking the melody.

EDIT: Ok, this is the best recording I've got for now. It's just to give people an idea of the melody. Bleh.

Lyrics

The moon is a specter tonight,
My hands brush the ivy-clad stone,
Vines that climb with no compass, roots clinging wherever they’ve grown.

I pause to refasten my coat
as a storm I can’t see rushes in,
Like some distant sea monster aware you don’t know how to swim.

Oh, if I could wish on a star, I’d choose the sun,
Don’t navigate by the dark heavens, or you’ll be undone,
For the night is a treacherous lover if leading the way,
Breaking promises made, come the day,
Breaking promises made, come the day.

The road twists away from my home,
Like water left freely to wend,
If I follow, I’ve offered my fate without knowing the end.

Perhaps I’ll emerge in a glade
Where the sky opens wide as it calls,
Would it signal a respite or simply a fairy ring’s thrall?

Oh, if I could wish on a star, I’d choose the sun,
Beholden to none, for it shines with no hidden webs spun,
For the night loves obscure constellations of doubt and dismay,
Breaking promises made, come the day,
Breaking promises made, come the day.

Oh, if I could wish on a star, I’d choose the sun,
Don’t navigate by the dark heavens, or you’ll be undone,
For the night is a treacherous lover if leading the way,
Breaking promises made, come the day,
Breaking promises made, come the day.

Has a classic folk sound to it. The lyrics are superb, super evocative and with some great poetry in them. Deserves to be a full song!

I can go through this an copy and paste every amazing line, but just know this is a fab write!! So visual and I love choosing your star to be the sun. This is just all over me....your voice will be ready in its own time, maybe your time is to write now.

The sun being an option for the "wish upon a star" crowd is an idea I've not encountered before. I like it!

Excellent execution with the lyrics too.

Very evocative, and I am eager to hear the eventual recording of this, as well - keep these coming!

@janeg
Maybe you didn’t intend the theme but it is inspiring you well.

The moon is a spectre: Great opening!

if I could wish on a star, I’d choose the sun: Great closer for the last stanza!

And lots of lovely lyrics in between.

There's a lovely gothic tone to these lyrics, set right from the start with the moon and the ivy and stone. Really set me up for enjoying the rest of the song. Superbly evocative writing.

Evocative and fantasy-worlsbuilding imagery. I really like the introspection here. I would love to hear someone set it in a renaissance-influenced style.

Very nice write. Some really good lines in there. I noticed on your profile page you made mention of winning a contest on Godzilla if I understood correctly. Funny, because I had been thinking to write a lyric on the big G for a while now as a big fan. Anyway, good writing here.

As always, friend, your lyrics paint the most vivid picture, and this is a fascinating story to imagine! The chorus is really lovely in this one, and I particularly love this line, “For the night is a treacherous lover if leading the way.” <3 Thanks for sharing!
