Hold On

by @morti

Liner Notes

This song started with reflecting on how it's been a year since Putin started his illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, but I haven't been in a war. I don't know how to write about it and it's not my place to speak either to or for someone who is so I tried to make it a bit more general. The tyrant could be anyone and the people resisting it could be anyone and I had a few possibilities in mind when I put this together.

Lyrics

The tyrant doesn't knock
He breaks into your mind
Massages your amygdala
Infects it with his lies

He tells you you are weak
He wants you to believe
But he doesn't know himself
The things you can achieve

You gotta hold on
Never lose your grip
Keep the goal in mind and your hopes in line
And the day is yours

You gotta hold on
Never compromise
It will take just as long as it takes and then
You will prevail

The pushback has begun
And he will be excised
He will die alone
Deserted and despised

While you live forever
On the right side of history
As the victors over hate
Glorious and free

You gotta hold on
Never lose your grip
Keep the goal in mind and your hopes in line
And the day is yours

You gotta hold on
Never compromise
It will take just as long as it takes and then
You will prevail

You gotta hold on
Never lose your grip
Keep the goal in mind and your hopes in line
And the day is yours

You gotta hold on
Never compromise
It will take just as long as it takes and then
You will prevail

First time I've heard "amygdala" in a song, I think. This really rocks! Love the choruses and the pause at the end of each before the galloping rhythm resumes.

This kind of message is prefect for a rock song. I can see this fitting different situations, particularly the first verse, which is my favorite besides the awesome chorus. That chorus is so powerful. Loved the music and melodies. This is a great song! #tit4tat

Sometimes I think that political protest songs are a thing lost in the past and then...this. Lyrically it connects on so many levels as the tyrant can come from so many places or be so many things. The composition is catchy and memorable, as is the vocal setting. The lift on "prevail" is absolutely hope-inducing and delivers a punch of optimism. Really satisfying listen. #tit4tat1

Wow I am loving the guitars!! Great drums too. I really like songs that are written about something very specific, but you write in an open way so that you would not know what that thing was. I think it really focuses the writing yet leaves it open for the listener to interpret. You did a really great job with these lyrics. I love how you sing the line "glorious and free" - it actually sounds exactly like that! Great vibe and message and really well performed and recorded. I really like your song!

Hold those thoughts! It's all truth here. And hope. And the chorus is spot on: we gotta hold on, and it's just the US of A. Good inspiring rocker. Guitar lead is dark and serious. May we all come through this.
