This Old House

Liner Notes

Towards the end of 2020, @claudia and I moved to Germany. We had to get over before Brexit and travel was difficult then. Because various borders were closed we couldn't drive so our only option was to take a suitcase and a cat each on a plane. We lived in a couple of little flats and then bought an old house about a year ago. There's not any part of this you'd call "easy", but I have to say it's worked out pretty well. This is a #country song about moving countries with the one you love. Country is when slide guitar and vaguely-American pronunciation.

Lyrics

I moved away from everything I knew
To a strange and faraway land
With two cases and two cats away we flew
Up and away to the great unknown

The world looked the same inside four walls
The only changes were the spaces between
As time went on our world got less small
Saw where we were, and where we wanted to go

I'm not a person who's good with change
And yet from one day to the next
Everything we saw around us was new
And what was left was only us
But there's nowhere else I'd rather be
Than in this old house with you

We gathered together everything we could
And we bought this little old house
It's stone and bricks and nails and wood
With no right-angles to be found

It'll take some work but we're getting there
The dream house coming slowly true
With every change and every repair
It feels more like home each day

I'm not a person who's good with change
And yet from one day to the next
Everything we saw around us was new
And what was left was only us
But there's nowhere else I'd rather be
Than in this old house with you

We'll stay here forever just us two
In our little old village home
Although it was hard it's a dream come true
In this old house with you

Beautiful song, I like the lyrics a lot! I’m happy for the both of you that you realized that dream of yours and that it was worth the effort. Willkommen in Deutschland, nachträglich :) #tit4tat

I'm from Texas. It's kinda country, lol. It reminds me a little of listening to Dead Milkmen when I was a teenager. What I love about it: it sounds fun and authentic. #tit4tat

I like that line, 'the only changes were the spaces in between', this is a nice take on moving and the craziness and dislocation that comes with it, and I like how you wrap it up with nowhere else you'd rather be than in this old house with you. Nice slide playing too!

Ausgezeichnet ! I'm getting J.J. Cale vibes here.
It's a great song to hear in a car, going away.
Contry is a great genre for "away from home" theme. But this is slightly different, more a "home away" theme.
Your song moves complex feelings : excitement of a new life, the fear and sorrow to loose your comfort zone, and then the overcoming of this trial. Travels are like diamonds : there is nothing harder, and nothing more precious.
I could go on with this #tit4tat if you wish.

@seppo
I like these kind of "true stories" with a happy endings :)
I feel this.

Nice slide and Lloyd Cole sounding vocals (though he was from Derby, not US, iirc)! Lovely sentiment shines through: focusing on what matters through the upheaval.

I like the feel of this. Lean into that jangle. shades of Real Estate if you squint your eyes. I like the personal story. favorite lines: "I'm not a person who's good with change", "not a right angle to be found", "The world looked the same inside four walls The only changes were the spaces between" and the final two lines really stick the landing for the whole piece.

#tit4tat 1 - I'm good for up to 4 if you want to keep going. no pressure though either way's is fine by me.

#tit4tat1 I never would have listened to your song here, you know there are just so many people and so many songs in FAWM. But here with tit4tat, I found you. Very nice to listen to your song, and realize the challenges of moving country. I will listen to more of your songs. Thanks for doing the tit4tat.

That must have been a really challenging time to move house. I really like the message of this song and there are some lyrical gems in here. There's kind of an interesting metaphor about how you're building a home and building a relationship at the same time! Thanks for sharing!

@pooka
I know your house and this summarises it quite well!
