Still We Have To Choose

by @calicocat

Liner Notes

This was simply an attempt to copy a lyrical form I saw @bethdesombre use on FAWM. The recording is a little rough but I'm writing too fast to really *learn* these songs.

Lyrics

I found a river in my head
Like a slender silver thread
Cascading in a shining spate
Where the sable rocks await
In the web of light I read my fate

Never knowing what we gain or lose
Choosing blindly, still we have to choose.

And like a dawn-lit pyramid
I see revealed what once was hid
The grief and care that might have been
The love and joy I didn’t win
The other roads I never did begin

Never knowing what we gain or lose
Choosing blindly still we have to choose.

I hear it with my dreaming eye
A call with which I must comply
An urgency that must be met
A duty, or an unpaid debt
Again I sink in dream, and I forget.

Never knowing what we gain or lose,
Choosing blindly, still we have to choose.

Never knowing what we gain or lose,
Choosing blindly, still we have to choose.

oh cat, i've missed your voice and your songs so much. 😭 that chorus melody is so gorgeous and perfect, the way it weaves and winds up and down in unexpected ways. and god, the strength of those two lines—they sum up so much of what life is. this is a keeper 💙

I feel you on the "writing too fast to learn". As a Fawmling, I'm surprisingly enjoying putting out rough drafts as the ideas and challenges keep coming!

This song is lovely. I'm immediately into the vision in the first few lines. I find an ambiguity in the chorus lines that I enjoy. There are many emotions generated for me (positive, negative, and neutral) when it comes to making choices where the outcome is so unknown.

Happy to have provided song form inspiration (which song?) (And what is it about rivers? I have a "river like a silver thread" in my "The Story" song this month). Your melody is mesmerizing, and I love "Choosing blindly, still we have to choose."
