I'm Jacob. Longtime Fawmer. (13 years? ...wow!) I'm a creative professional IRL (along with being a recording artist on a bit of a hiatus) and started a new business last year. Life is a bit nuts at the moment. I'm on a work project in Boise and only have a cracked Martin with me. I guess that kinda pares down the musical options! So I have no earthly idea what may come of Year 13 but I always look forward to it!

I have a couple of collabs in mind, and I'd love to do a few more. Probably mostly music/lyric writing and less recording this time around. Hit me up if you want to collaborate!

FAWM 2023 Goal: Strip it back, keep it simple, go for the gold inside.

Hi Jacob - You had mentioned interest in maybe coming to FAWMStock West . I wanted to reach out with an update in case you hadn't seen the thread.

We've narrowed down the weekend and venue for FAWMStock West -
August 18th through 20th in Ocean Park, WA!
Cost is planned to be about $84 (plus fees) per person, not including food. That costs covers lodging on site and activity space.

We need to put together a minimum count of attendees to be able to reserve the facility. We'd like to have that information within the next two weeks or less, if possible.

If that weekend works and you are planning or at least leaning strongly toward attending FAWMStock West, would you please add your info to this Google Form:

https://forms.gle/oFMRsWhvER5RfqzWA

Please note that this form is just to confirm if there is enough people to make this happen. If we get enough people signed up, we'll probably setup an EventBrite page or something similar later this year as more details get worked out.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Hey, Jacob - thanks again for inviting me to join in on I Can’t Change You. I’ve really enjoyed your music. I’m travelling this week, and staying in a hotel. It’s made me even more impressed that you’ve managed to get such great stuff done while working in Boise and looking after your mom.
[avatar]
I checked the message board and there's no update as to a time, yet, for the Songfight Live event. Still most likely in Bend and still most likely in the July/August time frame. If it's the weekend before or after Fawmstock happening in late August then the wife and I might make a week of it.

@gb9
Thank you for your kind comment and thoughts on 'Begin Again'
[avatar]
@b3nut
Thanks for the kind comments and listen to "Recombobulate Me"! That was just a hoot to throw together!
[avatar]
Totally in love with our song! It was amazing working with you and I hope to write more songs together in the near future.
[avatar]
Thank you.❤️
[avatar]
Hey man, I’m sorry to not check in with you sooner, been really busy with life and all. Anyway, thanks for your kind words on my tracks, really means alot:)
[avatar]
@andrea
Hi Jacob, Dropping by to say thank you for collaborating with me. I love our song. I look forward to working on it some more after FAWM. I'm thankful to meet and work with you. Talk to you soon :)
[avatar]
@savoy
thanks for commenting on 'error in character.' guitar is historically not my strong suit- playing, recording, etc... so it's affirming to get a compliment on it, i've labored over strengthening my guitar skills. and i checked out Brooke Fraser, what a vocalist! i can definitely hear some similarities.
[avatar]
Let's make it happen! Adding vocals to a rough mix sounds perfect.
[avatar]
Thanks for your generous assessment of "Shape of Wind" . Maestro Dragondreams did a spectacular job of interpretation. The poem is now posted. I will pass your words on to the poetess, Naomi
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your kind words! For unknown reasons, I practise blues and jazz stuff on Sundays. Often ending up with improvisations like this one two weeks ago. Let's see where it's going. I never watched Frasier! I guess I spend too much time on my DAW, that I need no TV or streaming 😂
[avatar]
Thank you Jacob! I really appreciate your kind words!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thank you, Jacob. I'm always a bit careful with constructive criticism on this platform cause most of us upload very raw drafts (including me). But sometimes there is such a crucial thing that keeps me from listening but is very easy to fix, so I cannot keep it for me. I'm relieved that you don't take it personal. Your song has potential, so I hope you can convince the team to get the last 20% out. My ears also need a rest after FAWM.... and congrats for winning!
[avatar]
@andrea
Thanks for your thoughtful comments on 'Show Me What's Inside'. I was surprised how easy it was to find an ordinary object that gave me inspiration. I am going to do this more often ;)

Congrats on your win! It was so nice meeting you this FAWM :)

@kristi
Hi Jacob! Thanks for your nice comment on my lyric, "Sabotage". I'd be delighted for you to give it a whirl! Thank you!
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out my cat-ballad, "O Cat"; most of my songs have some humor in them. I wanted to strike a balance between sincere love and true annoyance. Glad you liked it!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for what you said about my song Every Town in Tennessee. I thought I'd responded, but somehow writing and posting a song comes a lot easier than pushing the Submit button at the end of a comment. Glad you're here.
[avatar]
Jacob, are you still in Boise? I’m on vacation in Idaho.
[avatar]
Jacob! Thank you and thank you and thank you. 😃🎶

Guitar: My main electric guitar for solo and most main rhythm parts is my Reverend semi hollow Club King with 2 p90 style pick ups. Always in the middle position. Heavier strings… 11-50? Probably S.I.T. Brand. One of the very first of this model ever produced. It is in my profile pic. I pretty much only play reverend electric guitars in general these days.

Amp: Well… I am going to make a confession… I do have a few amps but almost every electric guitar I’ve recorded in the last few years has been through my Sansamp flyrig. 😉 I pretty much use various sansamp or quilter for electric guitar and bass these days. I should just sell me tube amps at this point. Ha.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out glimpse! And yes, there's some strange wizardry happening with Nadine's nylon guitar!
[avatar]
Hey, thanks for the comment. I changed some things on Sounding Off and I think it is a million times better. Let me know what you think.
[avatar]
@andrea
I love your comment on The Shadow! I would love to collaborate if your time permits! This was a skirmish write, so we can make any changes as needed. I'll peek over what I wrote tomorrow and see if I want to tweak anything. Thanks :)
[avatar]
Thank you!
[avatar]
@nadine
... and thanks for your reminder of taking care of my ears. I do most on my mixing on headphones cause my desk has such a nasty 100 Hz resonance... and I REALLY can't do drum and vocal mixing with them. But it hit me quite hard this winter, so I had to take a break for 3 weeks. It's hard to remind yourself to be a bit patient and do less with headphones or with low volume. Get well soon!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thank you, Jacob! I started with my online band collabs, because I'm predominantly a composer and producer. There's a gap of rougly 15 years of what I can write and what I can play, and I won't be able to catch up. I never felt well as a performer, so my main motivation for buying my guitar and vocal mic is just being able to explain my ideas. I hit the wall writing tabs without knowing if they are performable... or explaining a vocal idea just by doin a karaoke track. On most songs, I'm happy when more skilled instrumentalists and vocalists bring their own mojo. Especially singing, cause that's completely not my thing.

Of course we could collab on a heavier song. I write plenty of them, but most just turn to dust on my hard disk as a MIDI draft, cause I cannot play them and probably will never. During FAWM reach out for whatever need tag I have on my demos - And outside FAWM I have a list on my website (site "collaboration") or just mail and ask. As I didn't finish off my pile from last year, I'm a bit busy in the next weeks and months...
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for listening to "Glimpse". So happy you enjoyed! Haha, yes my nylon string is resting. But not because of playing heavy music on her (what I enjoy and do quite a lot), it's more because I need a break from composition and playing this weekend. Maybe it's that famous mid of FAWM crisis xD
[avatar]
Ha! We both advised each other to keep parts of a quick throwaway song to come back to at the same time. 😝
[avatar]
Thanks for the continued support and feedback. It means a lot. I’ll be doing some catch up listening over the next few days so will be sure to check out any tracks I’ve missed so far 👌
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on my CCM song! I'm glad it strikes a chord!
[avatar]
Thanks for the reassuring words about harmony singing. Someone did tell me recently when I was trying to sing Tracy Chapman's Fast Car and got the melody all wrong, that if I laid the recording over her singing it, I'd find I was singing harmony. I tried it with some other things and found it kind of worked...I like the idea of inadvertently doing it by not being able to hold a melody in my head....Reminds me a little of when my daughter was 4 and used to ask me "What language am I speaking, Mama. Is this French?" to which I'd say "I don't think it's one I know, but it sounds interesting. Maybe I can learn it some day." Watching my e-mail for your Collaboration Invitation. Thanks again for thinking of me.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for listening to that behemoth!
We really appreciate it 😀
[avatar]
Hi Jacob! Thank you for the comments! I feel like I should pass on the credit for the Fading Away super smooth lead vocals though - that was all @oddbod :)
[avatar]
Jacob - I would love to collaborate. Hooray. Happy to contribute to your song. Don’t know much about singing harmony, but maybe I can learn. Thank you for asking and for listening to Every Town in Tennessee. It was fun to try to fit it all in there.
[avatar]
Oh my lord, I haven’t actually commented on any yet? Well I’ve been listening as you’ve been going, if that counts for anything. I will comment. You’ve done a lot of great things with your humble setup!! Ha, I bet it’s both inspiring and challenging at the same time.
I really appreciate your support on the lyrics. I’ve never done it before but wanted to. The support and any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
[avatar]
Thanks for the minor key bard thing on "Now It all Begins". I substitute minors for majors a lot perhaps because they are easier on the guitar (although my Zen is kinda minor key anyway. I listened to many of your songs - creative, crazy, techie. My total toolbox at this point is a couple of guitars, i-phone and little Yamaha keyboard I got at the Goodwill store. I gotta learn how to use my DAW
[avatar]
You asked re collabing ? I am formally hitting you up 😀
[avatar]
Thanks dude. I use Reaper - every time I try another DAW, it's missing stuff Reaper does or just has an arse-about-face workflow. Reaper does it all, and it's easy and simple to use.
[avatar]
I've used the Logic "personality" drummers, what I call them, before. They are quick and easy but they don't work for me. I get irritated because I can't get them to do what I want! Ha! I love the producer kits since it lays out the entire kit with its own fader and routing. That way I can get it the way I want. I played drums for many years so maybe that's why? Anywho, keep on rockin'. I gotta listen to more of your tunes. You're doing well this year.
[avatar]
Thank you, I mean it. 10/10 completely took me by surprise as it’s unlike what I would have expected from you, and just so GOOD, the best one I heard this FAWM. Of course also thanks to @leah0k’s outstanding performance. Thank you for your listens as well.
[avatar]
Dude. Thank you.
[avatar]
I wonder if you'd help me and @woolford out with this... https://write.fawm.org/forums/969
[avatar]
Thx mate is is really excellent! I love it!
[avatar]
Sent you an email with some Lyrics if your plate hasn't gotten too full yet
[avatar]
You're the best, Jacob, thank you so much!!
[avatar]
Amazing! Email me at:
corinne dot lucy at gmail dot com
[avatar]
Thanks for the great feedback again. Ive been hitting it hard this first week so I need to slow down and catch up on some listening. At least for a few hours anyway 😂
[avatar]
Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you. I just discovered the general comments part of my profile page. Will shoot you an email about a song idea
[avatar]
@brisk
"wistful and hopeful" - yes, that's what I was going for I think, though I don't think I put it into words. Thinking about it, I feel a lot of songwriting is trying to mediate two conflicting - or at least contrasting - feelings. Kind of thesis, antithesis, synthesis in musical form. Or am I just enjoying the sound of my own typing?
[avatar]
Oh wow, I'd love to collab! Let me know what you've got in mind!
[avatar]
I'd love to collaborate with you on something this month. Even if you just want background vocals on something. I've been big fan of your music on here over the years and I think our styles would mesh really well.
[avatar]
so we are paired in Random Collaboration , i will send a lyric to your email in next day or so!
[avatar]
@leah0k
A hunnert percent, let me know what you are looking for. Let’s collab 🙌 Shoot me an email and let me know what’s up!
[avatar]
@owl
Thank you so much for your kind comment, Jacob.
[avatar]
@leah0k
Eyoooo I'm kind of back, taking it super easy with zero pressure on myself because the sand in the hourglass is dripping full speed - but I did post something for feedback so we'll see what happens with the month of Feb. I see you have a song called Strugglebussin and I am looking forward to giving that a good listen because it's basically my daily anthem haha :-P

Have a Phun Phawm!
(Hope those aren't cusses in other languages! #ohwell)
Leah

@ryako
Thanks for your comment! I don't know what happens in my head when I write, either. I just go somewhere.
[avatar]
As always your feedback is outstanding. Thanks for the head's up on the mix on Unlovable Island. I was attempting to use this Sound Reference plugin on my mix bus but for some reason, it made one side louder than the other. I uploaded a different mix. 😀
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words about "Songsmith's Prayer"! I'm so glad you found it inspirational! You're not the only one who got a "warlike" vibe from the drums, but for the record, my drum machine calls that beat "Tango1" Go figure.... 😄 Thanks again!
[avatar]
@beacon
Yes, you need an ukulele. Is that even a question?

Thanks for listening to Pick Up Your Ukulele!
[avatar]
Hi Jacob, I like your sound very much! If you fancy a collab and feel we may be a good fit, drop me a line? :)
[avatar]
Heh! I wasn't expecting rap either - it just kind of happened! thank you again for your kind comments! I'm glad the update didn't disappoint!
[avatar]
Hi! Thanks for your comment! I am pleased to say it now has a demo!
[avatar]
Thanks for the welcome, you beautiful man. I'm excited to hear your depths again. Happy FAWMing!
[avatar]
Thank you!
[avatar]
@risbon
Excited for this year!!
[avatar]
@andrea
Hi Jacob, looks like we have been paired for the random collaboration challenge. My family and I just spent dinner listening to your songs on Spotify. I truly enjoyed each one! I look forward to working with you :)
[avatar]
Looking forward to some cracked Martin goodness from you this year. :) Glad you are back.
[avatar]
Hey, happy FAWMing! Hoping you find inspiration raining on you like manna from heaven, or at least, like someone throwing bagels out of a second-storey window. Looking forward to hearing your stuff!
[avatar]
What's up Jacob?! Good to see you.
[avatar]
eager to hear more of you stufflingness, good sir
[avatar]
Nice to see you here again. Have a wonderful FAWM!
[avatar]
Happy FAWMing!!
[avatar]
Hey, thanks for the magenta suggestion. I couldn’t get it to work but I tried other pics and I am happy to say my Mickey ears look good in green - lol!
[avatar]
That’s funny!!
[avatar]
I'll be writing. Don't know if any tunes will come from it but, hopefully something will emerge. See ya then and thanks for the shout out Jacob.
[avatar]
Thanks for the message! Not sure how musically active I’ll be this fawm but I’ll try to do at least one or two things.
[avatar]
Great to see you back here too! And thanks for leaving the first comment on my page this year. I was like, "uh...is this thing on?" :-).
[avatar]
Jacob Would love to possibly collaborate on something. The biggest challenge for me is the technical side of recording though. But am trying to figure out some DAW recording possibilities. Since you are without a lot of recording options maybe we could help each other get something together. I also have a background in some ministries. And while I am not necessarily looking to write a gospel song. The lyrics often tend to point in that direction if somewhat subtly. So we might find some common ground
Steve
[avatar]
Yeah, it does sound kinda painful, doesn't it...
I will do my best, as ever, and I'm so looking forward to seeing what you create too!
Have a great FAWM 😀
[avatar]
Thank you for the greetings! :)
[avatar]
Love your song Wanderer and especially love the build - really well done. Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Well, sounds like you've already got your first lyric started. Strip it back, Keep it simple. Go for the gold inside - sounds like a chorus to me...
[avatar]
Greetings to you! I’m glad that you’re back and I look forward to hearing your music this year. It will be interesting with a stripped down setup for you!
[avatar]
Howdy howdy! I'm with you on keeping it simple. Let's do it
[avatar]
Thanks, Jacob! I too am hoping for a better year.
[avatar]
Hey! Good to see you too! Welcome back!
[avatar]
Hi Jacob, it will be wonderful to collaborate. Thank you.
[avatar]
Hey Jacob! Happy FAWMing!
[avatar]
@wistah
Great to be back! Looking forward to hearing your music again! Peace be with you :)
[avatar]
@tan482
Always enjoy your songs- happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Welcome back Jacob - looking forward to hearing your beautiful voice again!
[avatar]
Hi Jacob, likewise, good to see you here too. Your challenge is going to be recording gear, but dude, this is FAWM. No one is judging your rig. We're here about the song.

Use the voice recorder on your phone. You would have re-recorded any you planned to release commercially anyway.

Voicerecorder app. Cracked Martin. Go.
[avatar]
Hi Jacob - good to see you here again. I'm sure the cracks will only add to the fun!
[avatar]
Great to see you here! That cracked Martin will do. Big hugs!
[avatar]
Jacob, great to see you have logged in. Sorry I never worked on Aurora. It’s been quite a year here at the Lake household. Lyrics to follow to explain. Did you work with Billy Smiley any further this past year?
[avatar]
@crisp1
Happy you're here and hoping another collab comes to be. Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Great to see you active again this year - love your music!
[avatar]
@oddbod
There are a lot worse options than a cracked Martin 😉
Have a good one
[avatar]
Hey hey, great to see you back and seeing what you come up with this year.
[avatar]
Thank you so much, Jacob!! It's great as always to see you too!!!
[avatar]
good to see you here, enjoyed your previous music
[avatar]
Howdy neighbor (sort of).:) Great to see you here again! Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Life is good here, btw. Always with some unexpected surprises as you well know, but no complaints here. Second FAWM retired for me and now my wife is retired too. (so the house isn't empty for me to make noise all day, haha)
[avatar]
So good to hear from you - I hope you are managing that crazy life well. :)
[avatar]
Hopefully you'll be around again! Welcome back to FAWM - I hope things are good with you and that you have a wonderful February! :)
