Coming back for my 4th FAWM.

I write on guitar and piano. I am primarily a finger style player and love playing in different tunings. I also love collaborating, both by turning your lyrics into songs, or by creating lyrics and a melody for your instrumental track. One of the very best parts of FAWM for me 😀 The second best part of FAWM is getting to listen to so much wonderful music and seeing such creativity! I love to listen and to comment, and am inspired by all of you.

I had not heard of The Free Design, but their harmonies are stellar. I thought with the song that you linked to that they might be Canadian, but they're from New York.

Glad you liked the McGarrigles. I met them a number of years ago, so I feel lucky for that. Kate McGarrigle , now deceased, is the mother of Rufus Wainright.
[avatar]
Thanks for visiting "Cassidy's Song". She liked it, but complained that it wasn't long enough. I told her (via her mom) that she should tell me other things to add to the song, but no further details have arrived.
[avatar]
Thank you very much for listening to Blurred Around the Edges and for your kind works.
[avatar]
@scubed
Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my songs! And I do hope you get to Ireland someday - it is absolutely magical.

And congratulations on such a successful and productive FAWM!
[avatar]
@nadine
During a skirmish I unfortunately dont find the time to look up the words but it's a good idea. I haven't written based on a picture. I should try next year. This may be a challenge cause I'm not a visual person ^^
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your comment on "Just one bite". I'm new to writing with word clouds. Usually, I just write whatever comes into my mind and try to find rhymes and build the story around. It's an interesting technique!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your beautiful comments and yes the other part of me is or was in education, i am more freelance now, and my life views often come out in my songs, and the emotional development of our youngsters is something i feel we can do so much more with but how also it could create such a much better society for us all to see being in touch with those emotions as totally part of life. THank you again lovely soul and look forward to diving into more of your huge output. woohoo xxx
[avatar]
Thanks, Susan, for your most recent comments on a couple of my songs. I'm truly glad you like them. I do think of myself, strength-wise, as guitarist or songwriter first and singer last, so anytime anyone compliments my vocal work in any way I'm especially pleased. As one of my mentors called his own singing style, I "talk with a hint of melody" a lot of times. Anyway, thanks for commenting and enjoy the waning days of FAWM.
[avatar]
@tiias
Thank you for your kind comments on ”I am like bubble gum”. I am really amazed by your productivity - 36 songs! Will be listening to more of them this month. Looking forward to hearing you next hear as well.
[avatar]
Glad you liked my "Icing on the Cake" - I like doing historical pastiches.
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words on "U of S"! Looks like you had a stupendous FAWM! I need to get more into collabs this 50/90, and would love to do one with you if you're going to be around! Congrats on the BIG WIN! 🏆
[avatar]
@monty
Congratulations on another impressiveFAWM.
[avatar]
Hi Susan. Congrats on a very productive FAWM! Thanks for the nice comments on "Hello Hello." Yeah, that song started with my co-writer talking about the incident in the first verse (I coined "digital foreplay" in reaction to the thumbs flying) and expanded the song as we got into a "so what?" discussion. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it. The Gnadts...yes, very nice folks. My wife and I have gone a few times and hosted about 6 concerts ourselves while we were in a bigger house in Severna Park. Now we are on the Eastern Shore and can't consider that anymore. You may recall, too, that Larry M. is a decades-long friend of mine and sometimes-coworker.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on 'At Least the Start of Love', but your praise for the 'flute' has made me feel a bit guilty. I'm a keyboard player only - that 'flute' is actually the flute sound from a Mellotron VST.
[avatar]
I'm late to saying so, but thanks for your comment on my music! It's much appreciated and helped me make it through the month. Congrats on winning... more than twice over already! Wow!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments! Jacob really had a great plan on this and I definitely loved the pauses in the phrasing as well but it was a bear to get my voice in sync with his voice. I hope we have a chance to work on it more.
[avatar]
@n24
Thanks for all your sweet comments this year they've been super encouraging :) I don't think I have any more lyrics around, I have a bad habit of scrapping songs when I'm struggling to make them work and I need to stop doing that. I'll see what I can do for next year ;)
[avatar]
Thanks again for offering an emotional response, so appreciated!
[avatar]
@serene
Hello Susan! Thank you for your very kind comment on 'cat tower ', it was such a lovely comment I felt like crying! I'm so glad you liked it. Also love that you got Dodie vibes as I love Dodie!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment, Susan on "4 Walls" - Yes, I do feel better. 😂
[avatar]
Aww...thanks for all of the nice comments on the newest one, Susan. I was liking it more than some (don't tell the others) as it was rolling out, so I'm really happy for your encouraging comments.
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind comment on "My Morning Off!"
[avatar]
Thanks for clarifying! That Taylor 314ce sure sounds lovely and you play it beautifully!
[avatar]
Thank you Susan! And for the Soundcloud like, we like them too 😀👍
[avatar]
@monty
Congratulations on a really successful FAWM and there are still a few days left. And thanks for taking the time to comment on my tunes.
[avatar]
Yes, if it's ok with @daveyboy103 ?
[avatar]
Thank you for your lovely comments and the tip - I will certainly check it out!
[avatar]
Hi Susan
I've loaded a private lyric for our collab. Supermarket Love.
See if it works. Feel free to change anything.
I can write something new if it doesn't work for you.
Thanks
[avatar]
Thanks for your nice comments, Susan, on my family reunion song! A little backstory: I wrote a song at Summersongs songwriting camp (which I have been to a number of times) about "life" at camp...stressing unnecessarily about camp things, etc. but the song too camp focused to be useful as is in most other settings. So, I kept parts of it that I liked and changed the focus of the lyrics to a family reunion. It was a fun transition to try to pull off, so I'm very glad you liked it. Thanks again!
[avatar]
@phylo
Susan, thanks for your kind words on my collab with @yewnorker.
[avatar]
@gm7
Sure if I can help with Studio One you can email me ..discord is ok too.
[avatar]
You got it! It's from the point of view of my bed. Thanks for the kind words!
[avatar]
Ah I see the confusion, you did not attribute the song to me you attributed it to @richaaaay
[avatar]
No just me being an idiot again, I never remember to check the liner notes. Sorry
[avatar]
Hi
We're drawn in the random collab. I'm happy to write a new lyric. Anything you like to sing about?
[avatar]
Of course you can, thank you for your interest! My email is guatecoop at gmail. You probably still have it though, but I can send you the MP3 when I get home tonight.
[avatar]
@n24
Thank you for your comment dedication, 3 in a row! Your comments are always insightful and considered :) it gives me great pleasure when I see you've had a listen
[avatar]
@jeff9
Ditto from me on Five String Blues, Susan. Your encouragement is very much appreciated.
[avatar]
@johns
Thanks for your kind words on Five String Blues, Jeff did a wonderful job on turning my words into a brilliant song.
[avatar]
Hi! Thank you so much for your nice comment! 😄
[avatar]
Both good and bad aspects of FAWM. There is so much good stuff on it and so little time to trawl through it. I know I've been falling down on my listening the last couple of years but I don't understand how I missed you or forgot. never mind. I'll try to listen more.
[avatar]
thank you very much for your comments on my lyrics Peace and Quiet. You get me. 😀
[avatar]
I think you should record it! Lullaby’s are meant to be sung!
[avatar]
I would like to thank you so much for your wonderful and profound comment, it means a lot to me... You are way too kind...
[avatar]
@n24
Thanks Susan! Your comments have been so encouraging. Indeed, I can sleep when I'm dead! (or perhaps just in a few weeks)
[avatar]
@oswlek
That's funny, I didn't scroll down and read the earlier comment, I swear. Must just be something about the style. It's a compliment, I assure you. 🙂
[avatar]
Thanks for commenting on "Super Hero". I appreciate your take on it.
[avatar]
@oswlek
Susan, you are too prolific for me to keep up with! I'll get to more soon, I promise, though you'll probably send up another dozen in tie meantime!

Thanks for the kind words on "In This Moment". I decided it didn't have enough melodic variation on the title line ("in this mo" was F over middle C for every instance in the song), so I made some changes. It's funny that sometimes the act of sharing something let's you hear it differently. It does for me, anyway. My brain takes a listener perspective that was seemingly unavailable the hundreds of times I heard it and played it previously. It's great that this helps resolve issues I didn't know were there, but I wish I didn't have to share a substandard product to get there! 😄
[avatar]
Your comments are always so kind and supportive and your offers to put music to my lyrics are so generous! Always grateful
for you to do so!!’
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words on "Finder of Things," Susan - I look forward to listening to your songs!!
[avatar]
@sph
Thank you for listening: you are right you heard a mandolin and waldzither (a cittern with nine strings tuned like a cavaquinho with one more bass string :-) ). That evening I went a bit overboard with the instruments and added layer after layer
[avatar]
You've been busy - lots of tracks for me to check out. Re 'Cold Call' - after the first 'life has gained a foothold' where it drops to bass, there's a bunch of animal samples panned left - so you weren't mistaken about the goats.
[avatar]
Thank you so much! Older was a fun one to write.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your comment just now!
[avatar]
@b3nut
Thank you for your kind comments on The Water Is Safe! Yeah, the 314ce is a marvelous guitar...got mine in 2000 I think? It's been a good sidekick. ;)
[avatar]
@tiias
Thanks for your comment! Also really nice to hear your work, following <3
[avatar]
@sheslin thank you for busting my ZONG! I'm so pleased you had a good feeling listening to Letter Valentino. I've been ill the last week and still not feeling myself, so this was a good comeback tune for me. I appreciate your stopping by!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your lovely comments! So much appreciated! :)
[avatar]
@n24
Bless you for your comments Susan they always make me smile! Thanks so much for giving me all your wonderful feedback and keep on writing so I've got plenty of opportunities to return the pleasure!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to Natalie Almighty. I've had a long hard day with that song, thinking about her, enjoying the memories and feeling the pain of the loss.
[avatar]
@oswlek
Thanks for the generous comment on "Carolina", Susan. Yes, the acoustic is me. There are a couple little things in there that might have to be touched up if it were acoustic only, but you can't hear them with Rich's gorgeous guitar on top. 😄
[avatar]
Thx, Susan! Cool that "The Riddler" got a read and listen from you. @gordon , yes, did more than a first-class job on it!
[avatar]
Thanks again for the wonderfully kind thoughts on 'My Home.'
[avatar]
I went to a songwriting retreat a few years back. There were only 3 of us aspiring songwriters plus Pierce, and for a few days, Grace helped teach, too. It was great! If you're interested, the gig is March 4 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 7859 Tick Neck Rd, Pasadena, MD 7:30 show, 7:00 doors, tickets $15.
[avatar]
Thanks SO much, Susan, for your very kind comments on "Loyalty." I'm least confident about my vocals, so I'm especially pleased that you liked what I did. That song has indeed become a recent favorite for me (but don't tell me other songs 😀!). I think we are even going to play it when my sometimes-music partner (Janet Griffin) and I open for Pierce Pettis at a show in Pasadena next month. So, thanks for (unknowingly) supporting that song choice!
[avatar]
Thx for that shout-out, Susan, after you checked out @trebled 's "These Haunted Dreams," and for your thought that we might make a good collab team on something.
[avatar]
Hi Susan, thank you very much for your wonderful comment on "Love me like I love you"... I am so happy what Pau did with the words and how he made them become alive...
[avatar]
Wow, Susan, 13 songs already this month, and Feb's not even half over? Cool!
[avatar]
Oh, wow! Thank you for the glowing response to "Love Me Like I Love You". It's always nice to get some good lyrics to inspire the music. For me, this was a lucky find.
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind comment on my song.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on “time to wake”, I appreciate you listening and taking the time to leave your thoughts :)
[avatar]
So funny you mentioned the shaker - I actually just edited the post to include that I also heard that and was surprised because I wasn't shaking anything - so it must have been some kind of shuffle thing happening with the fabric of my strumming arm haha. Thanks so much for the kind words and glad you enjoyed it!
[avatar]
Thanks and I remember the even well! :)
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on my weird little skirmish song. Also, no pressure to return to it but I updated "He's Hot For Her" with a sort of second layer that fills in the story more.
[avatar]
Thank you for the listen and kind comments on my song Places Out Of Time.
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the comment on 'What They Said'!
[avatar]
Susan - I'm so excited about collaborating together. Hooray. Two possible places to start - I'll go listen to a bunch of your songs, and see what bubbles up for me. Also you are welcome to send me a few snippets of possibilities. Could be phrases knocking around your brain, or bits of music, or pictures or images or just anything. To me both approaches feel like channeling the spirit voices. My email is nancy.cunningham1451@gmail.com
[avatar]
Oh I’m so touched and pleased that Thank You, It’s True touched you! It means a lot.
[avatar]
thanks so much for your thoughtful comments on my song : )
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words they’re appreciated.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for such thoughtful and kind insight on my song, mess of a head. It really meant a lot to me!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your very encouraging comments on "Ruby" (yes...a hummingbird...based on the one that used to visit us). You noticed several things in the song that I happily stumbled on, so thanks for the careful listen and again, for the kind comments.
[avatar]
Hi Susan. Thanks so much for all of your kind comments on "I Thought I Had a Plan." That one started with the music, particularly that opening guitar part. I find that often I settle for more often-used progressions and such if I start with lyrics, but I do indeed write both ways.
[avatar]
@n24
Bless you Susan your comments are always so encouraging :) the guitar is just a cheap squire stratocaster but it has a nice sound.
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words on the collaboration I did with @andrea. Her wonderful lyrics dragged me well outside my songwriting comfort zone - just what I needed! :-)
[avatar]
Thanks so much on your thoughts about my tune. That means a lot to me!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your kind words about Let Go and Wild Heart as well as the warm welcome - I'll look forward to checking out your songs!
[avatar]
Hi Susan! Thanks for your comment on my song, and for letting me know the MP3 wasn't working. It's fixed now, if you fancy an actual listen to the song! :)
[avatar]
Sounds good thank you.
[avatar]
Thanks for reading along with my Puppet Master album, Susan. Good that you're a bit stumped, or at least questioning the song particulars to help bring about an educated guess as to its meaning/topic. 🤘You should step out of your music comfort zone a bit here, and record "Beyond Tomorrow" as a song. I'd welcome a metal-rocker or Pink Floyd-esque rendition of this lyric from you. Would be interesting.
[avatar]
@jorh
Aw thanks Susan, I couldn’t think of anyone better to set it to music, you always do an amazing job on reflective, hopeful lyrics like this one :) can’t wait to see what you do with it - also please feel free to make some tweaks as I’m aware it has quite a few different parts that need slotting together.

The original outro was this before I changed it for the last 3 lines:

The search for perfection
Is clouding my reflections
Need to stop questioning if i’m less than
Cause we’ve all got imperfections

I considered it for a bit but then decided I’d maybe gone a bit too cliche, and wasn’t sure it fit the tone of the rest of the lyric - but happy to hear what you think :)
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot for your kind words on "High Noon". I appreciate them a lot! As far as I know the song is 4:3 polyrhythmic. The rhythm guitar is on 6/8 feeling, the drums are 4/4, though some percussion do some weird stuff in 3/4 and 6/8.
[avatar]
All me on vox . With a bit of trickery
[avatar]
Thanks for your excellent feedback on "Just The Way It Goes" - I shall give it some more thought! :)
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on my dark song. I'm glad I don't feel like that.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for. the additional thoughts about "Souls." Yes, many options. I do like having something to break up the many verses, so perhaps some other twist might be cool. I'll ponder and experiment further..
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your very kind comments and specific observations on my "Souls" song! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I have one question since you referred to the chorus and are obviously a very thoughtful writer and listener: someone else suggested using the chorus only once...as a preamble, of sorts. What do you think?
[avatar]
Thanks for the follow! I don't get many of those.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your great comments!
[avatar]
Thank you for listening and your insightful comments.
[avatar]
hi susan, and thank you for your comments on hungary, the only instrument played on the song is guitar..so i think the synth sound you described was probably the guitar that had echo and tremolo effects.. Happy fawming!
[avatar]
Thank you! I know I will absolutely treasure the version you create and the one @darcistrutt will create! As will my wife. And I will take down the needs collab tag in my post!
[avatar]
@sheslin loved your take on Beyond. I purposely didn't listen to your and the other version until I recorded mine (one take, into my phone, the extent of my studio :-) ). So much fun to hear how it sounds to other people. Great job!
[avatar]
Oh, I would be so grateful for that! Thank you!
[avatar]
thank you. Of course you have already subscribed and I to you, but it sets an example for someone straying onto that page, and might just bring you a few more deserved listeners.... showbiz... what can I tell ya? Hugs. Thanks so much for the love and support. It means so much.
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your comment! It's good to read that I'm not the only one struggling with dampened strings etc. I merged two guitar takes and one vocal take for the demo. I cannot sing ANY phrase while playing ANY chord with ANY instrument. No idea how you people do this sooo well. I'm just a studio producer with too many weird ideas for songs I cannot perform 😂
[avatar]
@lcad
Thanks so much for your comment on Joy! It's just an acoustic guitar with a built in pick up plugged into a direct input box. The guitar is 20 years old, I'm amazed the electronics still work. I have no idea what I'm doing with recording, I just plug stuff in and hope it works :)
[avatar]
@oswlek
Wow, Susan, thank you so much for you generous comment on "Passengers". We must be of a like mind because you mentioned most of the things that excited me when I first stumbled into the idea. 🙂
[avatar]
Susan - I would love to collaborate with you if you’re up for it.
[avatar]
Hello Susan, I wanted to stop by and thank you sooo much for your kind and encouraging comments on my song "Have You Ever Been in Love"... It made my day!!
[avatar]
Hi, Susan, Gwyn Jones just sent me his music & vocals for If This I Love, I Don't Like It, if you'd like to hear the song.
[avatar]
Susan, So glad you liked The Movie In My Mind. I was so pleased that David Taro and Kate Stanton wanted to collab on that lyric. Thanks for your comments!
[avatar]
Thank you for the kind comment. And happy FAWM to you
[avatar]
Thanks! I got that outro from the card I was given and thought it would be perfect to end it.
[avatar]
Hi Susan, your comments are always so insightful and considered - thank you! As I’m mainly responsible for the backing track on the Movie song, I’ll answer… sadly not melodica, possibly the flutes VST in Logic (if I’m thinking of the right bit).
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your kind words on "Do not tear us apart again"!
[avatar]
Hi, Susan, Thank you for your compliments on If This Is Love, I Don't Like It. So glad you could relate to what I was trying to say. I will keep you in mind for a collab, and I look forward to hearing more of your songs.
[avatar]
@johns
Thanks for your kind words.
[avatar]
@brisk
Woah! Thanks for flagging up Hide and Seek, I had no idea about this song. IT. IS. IN. CRED. IBLE. It makes me think of Laurie Anderson's O Superman - maybe because of that weird human/machine vibe. Anyway, thanks so much for being nice about Clissold Park - though I also invite eviscerating criticism and/or subtle negging.
[avatar]
@frey
Thank you for the super kind comment! Looking forward to hearing more of your stuff this month!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on What Is A Song But A Prayer and for giving it a listen! Happy first day of FAWM!
[avatar]
Good to hear from you too! Thank you for the kind words on my tune. It's great osee you again 😄
[avatar]
Well as soon as I wrote that I received an email from a fellow FAWMer with music already attached so @gwynjones will be posting a version of beyond in the near future. Given I had already given you and @sdcpaman the green light, I let Gwyn know that you both may be posting versions as well.
[avatar]
If okay with @sdcpaman, @karendemello and I would love that - it is always interesting and lovely to have two interpretations!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot! Somebody posted a game on facebook and I saw a harpsichord. I hate this insrument, so I had to use it. And yes, I feel better after letting it out.
[avatar]
Thank you, I had to look up "The 5th interval jump", how clever am I?
[avatar]
I will write something for you for the Random Collaboration! a couple of days at most
[avatar]
@n24
Hey hey, Susan! Nice to be back and happy FAWMing :)
[avatar]
@tan482
Hello! You had me at finger style and different tunings! Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Good seeing you back again, Susan! Sure, another collab would rock! I'm setting for an album this month.
[avatar]
Hey, thanks so much! Can’t wait to check out your music when the 1st hits.
[avatar]
Hey, there! Looking forward to your contributions this year! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Thanks and happy FAWM, Susan!
[avatar]
@gm7
I get this song ( So Long) I wrote a similar tune during 5090. Yor voice is emotional..well done!
[avatar]
Hey dere! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Hi, Susan! So glad to see you back here!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thank you! I wrote "Fit right in" end of last FAWM and continued during 50/90. The lyrics are heartfelt! I struggled a lot with the performance, but I'm glad that @davidtaro and @katestantonsings added their mojo.
[avatar]
Susan - thanks so much, I’m glad the song moved you. Let’s do one together this year.
[avatar]
Hey Susan! I am and am really excited. Looking forward to hearing what you create during FAWM!
[avatar]
Have a wonderful FAWM, Susan!
[avatar]
And to you Susan, let's do something together this FAWM
[avatar]
@jorh
Thanks Susan - happy FAWM :) looking forward to it!
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words about my song. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with.
[avatar]
@crisp1
Glad to see you again, Susan! Another collaboration would be great! Have a fantastic FAWM!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for listening to Wanderer! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
:)
[avatar]
Hey, Susan - Glad you're here. I started listening to the latest songs you posted on SoundCloud - wow. they are beautiful. Can't wait to hear more.
[avatar]
Hi Susan! So glad you are here again! Looking forward to your lovely music and opportunities to collaborate! Liz
[avatar]
@tjeff
Happy FAWMing Susan!
[avatar]
Hello to you Susan! I hope that all is well with you. Glad that you’re back and I look forward to hearing your music again this year!
