Liner Notes

A friend of mine sent me a song he was working on in this AAB pattern. It was a Blues song with this type of phrasing. His song, the feel and the format kinda got stuck in my head, and then I started playing with some lyric ideas that showed up, inspired by that AAB phrasing in his song. You might want to try it! It’s a fun way to write!
For me, this song “The Trees Are Made of Glass” became a synthesis, or maybe a random working out, of a bunch of different things I was feeling and thinking about. I’m not sure where “The Trees Are Made of Glass” image came from, but it felt interesting/important to keep in there after it appeared. It’s the kind of song that could just keep going, with a few instrumentals sprinkled
throughout the verses. When I shared this recording with my friend, he dubbed it the “happy blues” :)

Lyrics

I got a house in the forest where the trees are made of glass (x2)
I’m tryna get there in the daylight
but I cannot see the path

This world has a winning lawyer, but a neighbor is all it needs (x2)
I gotta shiny new bible but it just says do as you please

I’m going down to the corner to the end of the edge of town (x2)
I’m gonna walk my drunk friends home ‘til they come around

I’m growing up by a river
it’s got me singing wild and free (x2)
I’m gonna ask that living water to baptize all of me.

Instrumental

Well the sun is shining, and the birds are in the trees (x2)
I’m gonna thank my darling honey for being so sweet to me

I wake up in the morning when the summer days are long (x2)
Now that I see you are coming back, I don’t know if you’ve ever been gone

There’s a house in the forest where the trees are made of glass (x2)
if anybody wants to get back home
all they have to do is ask

Yeah, I could use some more happy blues songs. Great performance, and I love your voice. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, @tcelliott ! It’s a tenor ukulele! Such a fun instrument that I’m learning. I really like the unique voicing of the chords, and the tenor size gives it a little more oomph, while still having a higher/sweet tone, I think!

What a great performance. I really like the melody and your mando? playing is excellent. Glad I got to hear this one, it's very good.

Thanks so much, @wynia Sarah! I really do think the world needs more neighbors than lawyers! Or neighborly lawyers, I suppose :)

Thanks, @tcelliott ! The song is officially up now! Thanks for the feedback about the trees of glass image/nature, much appreciated! We'll see if any more blues songs percolate for me this FAWM around :) Best wishes!

Uke-arrific! So sweet and yet such pieces of poignancy. My fave line is “ This world has a winning lawyer, but a neighbor is all it needs”

Your google drive link says I need permission, I cannot hear the demo/music.

I, too, enjoy the AAB song structure but mainly in the blues related genres, it seems. Most of the time. I love the trees made of glass image and I like that use of nature to set up the payoff lines in most of the stanzas.
