Cleaning Windows

by @mace66

Liner Notes

Another song inspired by a conversation with a friend. The subject of George Formby came up and obviously the song 'When I'm Cleaning Windows'. I thought, why should George Formby have the monopoly on glazed portal maintenance songs and came up with this. (I'm afraid that there are no Ukuleles in this though although I was tempted).

For the people interested in the gear -

This was recorded on a Zoom R8 using the internal chorus/reverb and mastering effects. The bass is a Squire Contemporary Active Jazz Bass, the guitars were an Epiphone SG and Ovation Celebrity. Drums are played in real time using an Alesis Percussion Pad. There are 4 tracks of vocals one that has been chorused and all panned around a bit. The crowd noise at the start was a free sound effect from the internet.

Lyrics

I've been cleaning windows,
Metaphorically.
Cutting through the grime and dirt,
So my mind can see.
Letting in the sunshine,
Silence the cacophony,
Feel the breeze upon my face.
What will be will be...

You're falling out of love,
I think that's what I see?
You're falling out of love,
You don't have the time,
The time of the day,
You don't have the time for me!

I've been cleaning windows,
Quite literally.
Not been done for quite some time,
As far as I can see.
My mind starts to wander,
Setting my thoughts free.
I feel the breeze upon my face,
But my soul just feels empty.

You're falling out of love,
I think that's what I see?
You're falling out of love,
You don't have the time,
The time of the day,
You don't have the time for me!

You don't have the time,
The time of the day,
You don't have the time for me!

No you don't have the time,
The time of the day,
You don't have the time for me!

When you're cleaning windows,
Methodically.
Cutting to the chase for once,
That's when you can see,
All the years of grime and dirt,
That get in your way,
You can't feel the breeze on your face,
You don't know what to say...

You're falling out of love,
I think that's what I see?
You're falling out of love,
You don't have the time,
The time of the day,
You don't have the time for me!

You're falling out of love,
I think that's what I see?
You're falling out of love,
You don't have the time,
The time of the day,
You don't have the time for me!

this is great, feels like it could be in a movie... totally groovin and i love the build at the end of the chorus into the pulled back verse. the vocal delivery is fab too—amazing vibes!

George Formby, was he the Billy Bragg of his day singing songs about the ordinary working man? That was a great listen and lets face it the uke would have been lost in all that grime. Great late 70s vibe 😎

This is great! Feels like you've captured that English pastoral pop vibe that goes through Syd Barrett, Ray Davies and Albarn/Coxon, and cast it back in time to George Formby.

Very upbeat and interesting. An interesting concept you have for theme/lyrics, very unique. I love the rasp you add sometimes in your voice, adds some nice timbre to the piece. Good work.

Such a fun song! I really the lyrics and melody. Sounds like a few conversations I've had. Oh and I could hear that metaphorical ukulele ringing loud and clear 😂
