Never Told You

Liner Notes
When I was growing up, my #queer uncle was kept at a slight distance from the children. On rare occasions, he would come by, telling stories and just being sweet and kind. I miss him; wish he knew the real me. But perhaps he did.
Heard him in someone's voice recently, which inspired this.
Wrote this in Db, which is not my typical composition key. Something about that range was speaking to me while I was in the flow.

Lyrics
Never Told You
Jemma Kline
Did I hear your voice today?
Did I hear you say hello?
Almost thought I saw your face,
Though I lost you long ago.
I never told you,
Never knew to say,
That I was like you,
Never said my name.
Did you try to tell me then?
Did you try to warn somehow,
That the world wasn’t safe,
That they always tear us down?
I never told you,
Never knew to say,
That I was like you,
Never said my name.
Each made up story, gentle greeting,
Awkward silence, welcome meeting,
Was your way of telling me I was like you.
Because you knew.
I never told you,
Never knew to say,
That I was like you,
Never said my name.
I wish you knew my name.
