Catcher

Liner Notes

This song is about the day when I was 16 and the power went out, and I read Catcher in the Rye in one sitting

Lyrics

Home alone at 16
Summer break, living the dream
Power goes out, woe is me
No internet and no TV

Sliding glass door bathes the kitchen in light
Might as well read to pass the time
Summer reading list, Catcher in the Rye
That day with Holden changed my life

What does it mean when you finally connect?
Feeling alone, life is a wreck
At least one person knows how you feel
Suffering together makes it real

Read it straight through, couldn't put it down
Sick of the phonies all over this town
I saw myself, an angry young man
Who wanted to help but couldn't begin

What does it mean when you finally connect?
Feeling alone, life is a wreck
At least one person knows how you feel
Suffering together makes it real

It is such a formative feeling to feel seen and connected to humanity in literature. I had a similar experience with the awakening — but i read it during one of my many insomniac spells at that age. I don’t think the power was out but I definitely read it dehydrated by candlelight. Love it, coach!
