Liner Notes

Call it a bout of midwinter blues, call it an ode to some delightful characters from The Wandering Inn, but here's a rather grim song from the PoV of the creatures that bring the winter each year.

I'm getting stuck a lot, both because Life and Scheduling and Energy, but here's what I got for now.

Lyrics

We grow like frost, timeless, appearing with the freeze
Our breath the howling wind, laughter clattering the trees
We arc the earth, triumphant, our aim to bite and cool
Til ice and snow all mortals know, your sun to overrule

We bring your blizzards, blinding, to slow your weary feet
To chill your aching fingers, til indoors you retreat
We’ve witnessed all your legends, survived through every tale
Your kingdoms fall, as do they all, but fae always prevail

Your rivers will freeze over, your roads will slick with ice
Your plants will wilt and blacken, your stores beset with mice
The drifts will blow to cover up the works of months and years
The drip and crack of blue and black will echo in your ears

We herald in the darkness, the dying of the year
The color draining from the land, its edges sharp and clear
The fog of winter cloaks you, surrounding all you do
There is no cure, you must endure, or spring won’t come for you

We care not for your feelings, your grumbles or your glares
We fly above your grasping and we float beyond your stares
Evading you is easy, as our forms are small and slight
Our wings beat fast, and will outlast your anger and your spite

We’ll flit away come springtime, our interest won’t long hold
Just long enough to make you think that all will remain cold
But call our names too loudly, or wish for winter’s call
Back to your door just like before our frozen hands will fall

If this is your idea of stuck, you don’t realize what great lyrics you write! Interesting phrasing and idea, flows well and for me, it’s a different kind of fae. I read a lot of fantasy so that doesn’t happen often.

Oooh this is chilling. I really like all the explicit details, and how sinister they are. Nice meter and rhyme, the rhythm just sings.
