The last in my bird honky-tonk trilogy. This one is about a loon that has landed on too small of a lake. Fun fact: you don’t usually find loons on small lakes or ponds because they don’t have a long enough runway to take off again. And they’re pretty terrible at walking, so landing on a small lake is kind of a big problem...

Had fun going deeper down the production rabbit hole on this. Just starting to really comprehend the amazing skill that good audio engineers have! (Gotta calm that snare down but going to stop for now before it never ends.)

Lyrics

Well I just came in last night
On a long distance flight
It was too damn dark to know where I was bound

Now I take a look around
And I don’t like what I see
Cause it looks like this old town’s too small for me

It’s not for a lack of places
To throw down some jacks and aces
Got a greasy spoon and a real nice fishing spot

All I need is all I got
But now I’m feeling low
Cause a place like this won’t ever let me go

Chorus:
Gotta leave this town
Before I run aground
Gonna pack my bags and start to pick up speed
But every time I try
There’s a tear in my eye
Cause you know that this old town’s too small for me

Well I’d run across the water
Just to get a little farther
Away from this slice of paradise

But I’m bound to pay the price
And it all seems so unfair
That I just can’t seem to get back in the air

[Chorus]

Love this trilogy and the fact that it works without knowing that it's about birds (but is even better when you do know). The opening stanza setting the scene is excellent (one suggestion: "I don't like what I found" instead of "what I see"?), and the chorus is catchy.

Oh that metaphor of a loon being unable to take off from a small lake speaks to this rural boy. Though I have found a medium size lake lately.
