Metamorphosis Zero

Liner Notes

This piece was composed to be a possible theme for a radio show about folks picking 6 pieces of music and a book for being stranded on a deserted island for the rest of their lives.

I’m not trained at all as a composer. I feel music is just one of those things that humans do. I have some training on the piano but have been mainly self taught for a few decades. One of the sets of pieces I return to regularly, both for its minimalist style [which I’m drawn to] but also the workout it can give my fingers, is Philip Glass’ Metamorphosis One through Five. And this piece is absolutely in conversation with those. And very directly with One. It steals it’s core structure from there but strips away even more (and thus the subtitle: Metamorphosis Zero). But unlike those pieces, which are for solo piano, this is mainly played by the computer as I transition from one synth (a clear bell type sound) to a second synth (called Tiny Echos as a setting in Ableton Live which has some internal modulation with its own frequency, its own cycle), while over the top or more like… hinted at(?) [The mast of a ship rising up just over the horizon, but the ship is just far enough that it cannot see me, nor I the ship.] There is a piano part. Very light. Which also fades in and then out.

Very atmospheric and otherworldly. Great layering. Solid track!
