This was for the prompt "What happened at the zoo?" for the Bad Song Club. I loved reading the book Good Night, Gorilla, by Peggy Rothman, to my children as they were growing up. The little armadillo was probably my favorite animal in the bunch. I did all the little voices for my kids; the love woven into that tale by Ms. Rothman was so vivid.
In my mind, the armadillo of my own story stays behind to secure their escape, just so he can make more animal friends and free them *too* some day. Couldn't quite fit that into the song!
Lyrics
Not the Armadillo
Jemma Kline
There’s a place in Philadelphia where we would sometimes go,
With animals of every kind to choose.
The monkeys and the pandas, even little cockatiels,
Are captured there for all the world to view.
But not the armadillo -
Such a little fellow -
So many dreams of who he wants to be!
Yes, that armadillo,
So very mellow,
Oh, he’d be sure that others there were free.
The exhibits and the habitats were kept so very clean,
The food was fresh and always there to eat.
Though open skies and open fields were calling out each day,
The prairie dogs and bats would never leave.
But not the armadillo -
Such a little fellow -
So many dreams of who he wants to be!
Yes, that armadillo,
So very mellow,
Oh, he’d be sure that others there were free.
So late one night he dug a hole,
He opened up the way.
He told his friends to come with him,
Where they could run and play!
Yes, the armadillo -
Such a little fellow -
So many dreams of who he wants to be!
Yes, that armadillo,
So very mellow,
Oh, he made sure that others there were free,
That they were free.

I had to listen to this track especially after reading the liner notes. My younger daughter loves the book, "Goodnight Gorilla." We especially like saying "Goodnight" with all the different animal voices. Sweet song!
