Zelenskyy - Long Live Ukraine

by @danielkelly

Liner Notes

I was honored to hear that the song I wrote for Alexei Navalny during 2024 FAWM was sung at a memorial event in Los Angeles yesterday.

This will be my actual 14th FAWM song, as one was a double-up/collab. 24 February will be 3 years of Russia's un-provoked invasion of Ukraine. My music has always been firstly about social justice. The blatant lies of Donald Trump about Russia and Ukraine in the past days have been shameful and with horrific consequences. #SocialJustice #Ukraine

Lyrics

D A G
As the vultures pick over the bones of your land,
G D A
And a million graves lie where the living did stand,
G A D G
The blood of your heroes’ cries out in demand,
G A D
хай живе україна (Khay Zhyve Ukrayina)

Bm A D G
Ukraine will live on, when the tyrant is gone,
Bm Fm D A
And his American puppet is forgotten in song,
Bm A D G
Zelenskyy’s brave people, who fought for so long,
G A D
Will once again know their freedom.

They thought you would flee when the first bomb it fell,
Many weak leaders do, as history can tell.
But you had heart, that they couldn’t expel,
Khay zhyve Ukrayina

Biden was swift to come to your aid,
But Trump only looks where a dollar is made,
Courage and strength, they make him afraid,
Khay zhyve Ukrayina

For three years has Goliath, stood in your field,
Soldiers of Ukraine, did their land never yield,
Only in freedom, can a country be healed,
Khay zhyve Ukrayina

I feel like I’ve been transported to a concert by Ochs or by Seeger. Your gentle but stirring chords and strong voice here tell the story of the age we are in: a time when brave deeds are sadly called for by those who would rather live peaceful lives.

Thanks for not skipping @bethdesombre I know a lot of people come to FAWM for fun, so I tried to be clear in the title about what to expect.

Also, I'm impressed that you can not only write excellent songs, but make meaningful videos (and arrangements) in one short month.

TBH I saw the title of this and was going to skip it until I saw that you were the one who wrote it -- I knew you'd be able to write a gorgeous and meaningful song on the topic, and I wasn't disappointed. The topic is important and well-presented; the rhyme scheme works well. and I like "And his American puppet is forgotten in song" and "courage and strength, they make him afraid."
