An Odd Bet

Liner Notes
#randomcollaboration with @johnkaniecki, who wrote the lyrics and made the perfect accidental B-Side to "Welcome to Violence" (https://write.fawm.org/songs/313413).
This collab began pre-FAWM when I went crawling through my old projects. I found several past FAWM and 50/90 projects that were complete, but I decided not to upload due to disappointment in the lyrics I had written for any number of reasons. I asked John if he minded me passing one of those along, stripped of any top-line elements that would imply a melody, and write lyrics based on the vibe. I had attempted to, but I still heard that old song playing and couldn't shake the feeling that everything I wrote was just a "re-skin". He agreed.
When he sent the lyrics back I used that and re-structured the song in whatever manor I felt best suited the lyrics, and as of this moment I couldn't even tell you what the previous version sounded like, so mission accomplished and extra special thanks John for giving the kid a home.

Lyrics
[Verse]
Harley Davidson, black leather jacket, hot blonde holding tight
Cruising down the highway on the way to the bar, or a fight
My Mustang motor roar had me feeling well below my age
I slammed the pedal down, and passed the biker in a rage
[Verse]
Flipped the bird as I flew by, disregarding danger
The day was already strange, and it was just getting stranger
I yelled out the window loud as I could “How does my dust taste!!??!”
Put my card down on the table, without caring what I played
[Adlib]
Sometimes you've got to play what you are holding, and not think about the stakes
[Chorus]
At best it was an odd bet
A life of risk might have regrets
The tricky thing is acting like,
the next days gonna be your best
My choices are not always great
But that's all that I've got
So maybe things won't work out
...but I'm still gonna take the odd bet.
[Verse]
Ever since the Neanderthal, survival was the primary game
A man can turn the other cheek, if he don't mind the shame
That biker he was coming quick, sick out of his mind.
Anger mixed with hatred made both the dude’s eyes go blind
[Verse]
Out on the great prairies the coyote hunts the buffalo
Life is for the living so please enjoy the show
If every choice made sense, then logic would be the only king
I cranked the radio and let Buddy Holly sing
[Adlib]
Sometimes you can't worry if 'this will be the day you die'
[Chorus]
At best it was an odd bet
A life of risk might have regrets
The tricky thing is acting like,
the next days gonna be your best
My choices are not always great
But that's all that I've got
So maybe things won't work out
...but I'm still gonna take the odd bet.
[Bridge]
Pulled up next to me cursing some foul words full of jive
Blew him a kiss then proceeded to pull out my forty-five
There's a moment, of deepest reason, when peace can conquer war
But in a flash, and a mad, mad crash, I saw the man no more
[Chorus]
At best it was an odd bet
A life of risk might have regrets
The tricky thing is acting like,
the next days gonna be your best
My choices are not always great
But that's all that I've got
So maybe things won't work out
...but I'm still gonna take the odd bet.
