2023. Yay!

Hi, I'm the whistling bus driver. I'm less annoying than a whistling bus rider, for SURE.

I want to write hip hop this year, mostly because I never have.

Also, I want to use only emojis for a collab lyric, to see how my collab partner interprets the vocal.

Sweet 16th year and never been kissed by a FAWMER. Okay, that's a lie. Oh man, just found out it's actually my 17th year. He was just 17, you know what I mean.

Hi Charlie - I'm just dropping this here in case you didn't see it in the FAWMStock West thread.

We've narrowed down the weekend and venue for FAWMStock West -
August 18th through 20th in Ocean Park, WA!
Cost is planned to be about $84 (plus fees) per person, not including food. That costs covers lodging on site and activity space.

We need to put together a minimum count of attendees to be able to reserve the facility. We'd like to have that information within the next two weeks or less, if possible.

If you are planning or at least leaning strongly toward attending FAWMStock West, would you please add your info to this Google Form:

https://forms.gle/oFMRsWhvER5RfqzWA

Please note that this form is just to confirm if there is enough people to make this happen. If we get enough people signed up, we'll probably setup an EventBrite page or something similar later this year as more details get worked out.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Yeah, I started out just writing lyrics, but a friend told me I really needed to pick up my old guitar and figure out how to play it a little. It's helped with writing so much to force myself to put some kind of music to things at least in my head. I still often feel like I did with my first kid, when I used to tell him I would keep him alive until his real parents showed up.

Hi, Charlie - I just listened to the music you did for Close to the Bone by @leakyplusme2 I like it a lot. It’s going to be stuck in my head all morning. It feels like it captures what that Close to the Bone phrase is saying. In some way it reminds me of the song Urgent by Foreigner, where the music makes the words really mean what they are saying, without needing much story.

@beacon
Charlie, just wanted to check with your message to me. Are you saying 1) that you don't want to be listed for this release, but you're okay with it going forward, or 2) you are not okay with this being released. Whichever way is fine.
[avatar]
@beacon
Charlie, just saw your note about union information. I'm unfamiliar with that but feel free to email me the information and what I would need to do with it.

Hey Charlie, I finally left a track in that empty demo slot!

thanks for the kind words on my epiphany
[avatar]
nothing to see here. (it's over thereβ€”>)
[avatar]
though I did miss the opportunity to write "thanks for you comment on nothing!"
[avatar]
ah, praise from Charlie . . . my work here is done. thanks, seriously.
[avatar]
@gslade
chaaaaarrllieee... we need to hang out again
[avatar]
"panacea!" thanks for your kind words on my song, Charlie AND for teaching me a new word (and for reminding me how much I miss pAt - I will give him a call)

@leepat
posted!

Better herky jerky than hanky panky with turkey jerky. Or something. Good things take time, and your music is a good thing.
[avatar]
Well obviously, but what about the subtext? Crime doesn't pay? Or that it pays for a while and then rats ruin everything.
[avatar]
@debs
Aww CC. πŸ’œ Thank you for your comment on Morenita, which made me realize that I need to really pay attention to this one and not throw it away because the lyrics are too weird. Honoured that you were the first besides me to hear it. And yes, the challenge I set myself were to use all the words in the cloud.
[avatar]
Thanks for the heads up on my demo fur Sing of Gratitude. Fixed!
[avatar]
A very generous offer, but I think co-author credit would overstate my contribution. More than happy with a wink and a nod in the liner notes.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Glimpse! Glad you liked it.
[avatar]
@cowex
If you're looking for more "strummed accoustic guitar + electronic music" tunes (and you very well might not be ;)), Psycraft's remix of Brad Suck's Dirtbag always stood out to me. A neat blend of rock and production magic, with a super clear mix. https://open.spotify.com/track/2s18q9zUaRZyhWOzhLCqGC
[avatar]
(Looks behind self.) Who, me?
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot for your comment on "Glimpse". I'm happy you enjoyed the song! It's a BIG compliment for me to hear that I played in time, cause I'm new on the guitar. I did not correct the timing, only cleared the noise and added some fuzz. Chris did an awesome job!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your kind feedback, Charlie!
It's good to see you. Hope you're having a great FAWM. :)
[avatar]
Hi Charlie. I appreciate your comments so much. Your praise means a lot, as I know what you're capable of, and your words are so kind. You always were.

Edit: Hmm, I see I said something similar only 8 hours ago. It's been rather a long day. All the more reason to look forward to your feedback, I suppose.
[avatar]
@atam94
hey thank you for listening to "Lazy Sunday" and sharing your thoughts. I really do appreciate it
[avatar]
Hi Charlie. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your thoughtful comment. I actually had to check whether 'proboscis' was biologically appropriate for elephants. I thought it was essentially a synonym for nose, but was used to seeing it in the context of insects and arachnids.
[avatar]
Thank you, Charlie for your comments about Mess Of A Head. Jimm speaks highly of your songwriting prowess. Looking forward to sitting down with your songs!
[avatar]
@amelea
Oh my ahaha super appreciate the shoutout on the recommendation thread. Thank you for validating the spunk :-)
[avatar]
On the Chicken Chopper song and Bacharach connection, I say go for it and I would love to hear what you do.
[avatar]
Thank you for you kind words on "Delivery". I hope to put a demo up soon, and I look forward to checking out your songs!
[avatar]
@muz
Thanks - I think that's got to be in my top five comments! I love the word 'jubilant'. You should listen and watch the original Ebeneezer Goode. Credit where credit due!!!
[avatar]
I definitely get where you're coming from on the production end of things. I used to have similar thoughts during FAWM of "Just do something quick and come back to it." But, my backlog of under-produced stuff isn't getting any smaller and I don't really need to add to it. One of my big goals this year was to streamline my recording process to get to the finished productions a lot easier. There are some kinks here and there, but, it's working for the most part.

And the astronaut images are courtesy of DALL-E ( https://openai.com/dall-e-2/ ), same folks who brought us ChatGPT. I was messing around with it and it came out with the image I use as my profile photo. I liked how evocative it was and decided "Why stop there?" So, now I make one for every song.
[avatar]
@djtjb
That is a really inspiring quote! Definitely gonna be posting that somewhere in the studio.
[avatar]
Thanks for the feedback!
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind review of Tiny Life, brother!
I think you’ve made a wise decision on the song credit thing. I mean sure we’re the same person today, but what if it changes like that episode of Star Trek where Kirk gets split in two halves (Good and Evil) in the transporter but then at the end they stitch him back together once Scotty fixes shit? I mean, in the interim our lawyers would have a hornets nest to deal with!
[avatar]
Thanks Charlie for your kind comment on A Winter's tale, glad you enjoyed it!
[avatar]
Also, I love the idea of the emoji lyrics!
[avatar]
Hey, hey! Yeah, I'd love to get meet for coffee or a hike one of these days! My February is pretty hectic, but maybe after that?
[avatar]
Thanks so much for taking a listen to "Fish Baby Birthday." I think "more nouns" is great advice for me... and actually I have a SONG CALLED NOUNS. ;) So I feel you are a kindred spirit. Though, don't get mad, it's actually about choosing people over things. ;)
[avatar]
@gslade
Nice. I've been encouraging these young IT people I work with to not jump into the script so soon. I told a couple of them that they are 100% free and stressed how unique that is. I said "you could go spend a year walking around Alaska and then get a contract job searching for something in Thailand", or a million other cool things you can't do once you "settle down".
[avatar]
@morti
Hey that means at least some good came out of the last time anyone invited me to go camping. πŸ˜„
[avatar]
@gslade
Hang on....you got a job?
[avatar]
@beacon
Awesome! Thanks for being so on it!
[avatar]
@beacon
Charlie, have you been able to think about the lyrics for the Harmony Singers Challenge song?
[avatar]
Well ya killed it! Hit us up if you wanna kick any other ideas around
[avatar]
@cowex
That's a great question, it seems like it should be right in the neighborhood. I'm aware of a 54301 but 54321 is elusive to me.
[avatar]
Hiya Charlie, good to see you around campus again!

I haven't tried this one before, but I think it would work similar to the way I do it on the Kaoss Pad. You just load in the audio file you want to scratch and tinker away!
[avatar]
@djtjb
I typically use a Kaoss pad for scratching. There are some vsts that can accomplish this too. I've been toying with the idea of getting a real set of decks this year. Peanuts samples you say? I can't wait to hear that! Bon Voyage Charlie Brown (and don't come back!) is one of my all time faves!

I've never used Logic but I assume it would be the same as in FL studio. If I'm using an audio source file for my drums I'll use the slice tool to cut out the drums at certain points to build tension for when I bring them back in. Usually I program my drums and if doing it that way, you should also still be able to slice the pattern. Hope this helps

I (still) want to dance like Charlie Cheney....

If you want a set of ears or to bounce ideas just hit us up! Thx for listening πŸ‘
[avatar]
Received! I will work on it later today if I can squeeze it in around work stuff. Just getting the kids together for school now...
[avatar]
My basic rule for songs I'm willing to do is it has to be something I would feel comfortable singing in front of my 10 year old son and/or my 69 year old mother. Basically at most PG rated πŸ˜€

re: @sugarcrew
Literal - That'd be up to Plat, I think
Figurative - I was with you, brother. But I've been hitting the low carb bandwagon hard and I'm starting to thin up a bit. Slowly but (hopefully) surely.
[avatar]
Hip Hop and you don't stop....! Looking forward to it. Do you have your MC name yet? 16 or 17?
[avatar]
Hi Charlie! I am happy to see you here again... Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Lol stylish fuzz WOULD be a good band name lol it’s like a $20 fuzz pedal and I positively love it. If I engage it with my big muff it just adds so much cool texture

😻🀘😎🀘😻

CHARLIE!!! Happy FAWM my friend.
[avatar]
I'm hip to your hippy hop! Look forward to hearing what you come up with! Have a great FAWM - peace, man :D

Good morning, Charlie Cheney. I miss our chats sometimes back when it was more populated but there were times when we could hash out two different perspectives on big themes and tiny details. I'm sitting here listening to Amelia from 50/90 '08, you nailed that one, sir. I'm also reading some poetry from Cynthia Marie Hoffman "The Last Time I Saw Amelia Earhart" and, of course, I thought of your song which is adjacent at best, but still more appropriate a soundtrack than I would have guessed. At any rate, I wanted to say hi and I didn't mean to take up all your time. Here's to another great day to write songs.
[avatar]
@debs
CC! πŸŒ»πŸŽŠπŸ‘£ A deep smile of "here we are again" from me to you.

I am u. Look no further!
[avatar]
Hey thankβ€˜s for following! Wow, your 16th FAWM! That’s amazing :) greetings and happy fawming
[avatar]
'at's what plans are for, to nudge you to do something entirely else
[avatar]
Charlie if you make a hip hop beat I will write a rap for it. This I promise you.
[avatar]
Ha!!! The van collab sounds like an awesome idea!!!
[avatar]
@max
Hip Hop eh? Looking forward to the madness. Happy FAWMing Charlie!
[avatar]
Welcome back, Charlie! 😍
[avatar]
Since I am famous for my moves (google wounded disoriented rhinoceros on a roundabout) I'd be glad to have nothing to do with your hip hop, so as to not destroy it completely. Except listening. That I'l do.
[avatar]
No, but I can show you how to make beet soup.
[avatar]
What kind of tracks are you wanting to make? What kind of hiphop are you into? Feel free to shoot any questions my way in regards to beatmaking/production/etc.
