This is the first time I've participated in fawm (spellcheck wants to make that "fawn" LOL) and I'm excited to be here. I've been songwriting for almost 10 years and producing songs for about 5 years (still on a learning curve). A couple years ago, I did a song a week songwriting challenge for a year, and of the 52 songs I wrote, maybe 7 or 8 I eventually used, so I know that writing a lot gets you through the muck before you find the gems.

I co-write with, as well as produce and manage a southern rock artist (www.kristikelli.com). More recently I've been trying other genres including pop, rock, adult contemporary, and R&B. I'm in a songwriting collective here in the D.C. area getting some work writing lyrics for top-lining, which I've found is just as rewarding as starting a track with lyrics first. Plus, I've absolutely discovered the joy of co-writing (I love what Shelly Peiken wrote in her book that co-writing is best explained as "song sex.")

I've been a member of TAXI music for about five years, and have met a lot of friends and mentors - I've also learned at the TAXI conference and other classes that contemporary songwriting is very different today, so I'm ready to ditch some old habits (no more metaphors and be more conversational and direct!!).

I mainly work in ProTools, but switch over to Logic with MIDI-heavy songs. When I'm songwriting however, there's nothing like the speed of Logic's little brother GarageBand.

My other interests in the past include DJ-ing in Latin clubs when I lived in Denver, CO (Salsa, Bachata, even some Kizomba - love those rhythms). I also have done some community theatre when I was younger.

Hi John, if you are still here - just wanted to say thanks for your really nice comment a couple of weeks ago. I've been so focussed on tit4tat that I've not actually been acknowledging people's thoughtful comments. So just wanted to say that I really appreciated it, and I didn't mean to blank you!

Oh, and one final thing - I was struck by being thanked for the 'advocating for the importance of words' . It's by no means a deliberate mission (although there are times in the past I've had to stick up for lyrics-only FAWMers having a right to be here), but I find that offering up a lyric freely helps people in two ways:

* Inspiring people to go in new musical directions based on what they see in the words/how they sing to them
* Helping those who have composed an instrumental track but need the words to go with it.

Thanks very much for the encouragement to see "Who Would Be Mine" through a different lens. I appreciate it. I also liked getting feedback on the chord progression. Much obliged!

Thank you for your comment, which I appreciated as it offered me a rare opportunity for introspection. My lyrics sing differently to different people, and you'll sometimes see that materialise in starkly different demos of the same words. I like to leave a little ambiguity in both the style and the substance, but it's possible my unconscious bias draws me to certain themes and structures over and over again.

But it was your mention of the direct/conversational tone that really made me stop to think. It's something that's always worried me a bit; that my style is too transactional. I often look at the songs here and wish I could construct sentences in the way they do. And perhaps some of this is from my work coming from the context of silence. If one knows the words will be sitting alongside music, it's easier to be drawn to the prosody rather than the literal sense of the thing.

Then again, some of my favourite lyrics of all time 'Don McLean's Vincent, Paul Simon's The Boxer', while being beautifully poetic, are also talking about their subject in no uncertain terms, and that isn't a bad thing. I do still wish I could do something a little more in the vein of Michael Stipe.

I'm glad someone liked the "great big bonfire of safety" line. Happy first FAWM!

Thanks for listening to “Hey, Dad!” - a tough one to write and perform for sure! Appreciate your kind words! :-)

Hi John, I'm glad someone could get my 81 reference. Glad you enjoyed Explode With Me! Thanks for listening.

Hi John in not-too-distant Fairfax. I'm in Cambridge MD. Anyway, thanks for your kind comments. I'm glad you liked "Moments of Love" and others. Congrats on a productive FAWM!

@nadine
Thanks for your kind words! So happy you enjoyed your listens. Yes, I am stylistically all over the place. Didn't spend too much time on production during FAWM, the magic happens later. Everything but "Maghetc Rose", "Glimpse" and "High Noon" is basically unmixed. ill return the tit4tat later!

Hi, John - I’m excited to be your partner for the random collaboration this week. If you’d like me to write a lyric, so could send me a phrase or some music or a little snippet or picture or anything or nothing at all to start from.

Hi John! Excited to work with you this week. How about you start us off with a little idea/progression and send it over to fawm.bolognabowl@gmail.com along with the key/tempo/notes. I can try to put my fingerprint on it from there and we can see where things go.

For vocals, I'm really not a singer whatsoever so I would defer to you unless you're cool with an instrumental track. We can chat on this further in email. Looking forward to it!
