I'm Pat, I release music as Pat Absent, and I use he/him pronouns.
I've made musical sketches and fragments for over a decade and finally started finishing and releasing songs in 2020, which you can hear in my first album Tangible Absence. I'm really proud of it!
I'm a songwriter, lyricist, vocalist, guitarist, and arranger who's comfortable patching and sequencing synthesizers. I'm working to hone my craft and connect with other musicians and songwriters. My music is a hard to pin a genre on as I personally like to produce a variety of sounds from track to track. You might hear #art_rock , #art_pop , #synthpop , #dreampop , #alternative_rock , #post_punk , #new_wave, #darkwave, #indie_rock , #indie_pop and more in my music. The subject matter and vibes tend to get dark but I still aim to make my songs fun to listen to, the kind of music I'd like to hear myself.

My influences include Radiohead, Joy Division/New Order, Brian Eno, Beck, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Neil Young, Pavement, Beach House, Yo La Tengo, The B-52s, The Beach Boys, My Bloody Valentine, King Tuff, The Cure, Gang of Four, Hall and Oates, Modest Mouse, Bruce Springsteen, Smashing Pumpkins, Cocteau Twins, and so many more.

I'd love to hear what you think of my music and I'm glad to reciprocate. Thanks for listening!

Hey Pat, thanks for the Well Written return comments. I am glad you had a successful FAWM and I hope you enjoyed your 1st year. This was my 11th and it's always a Blast!!!
[avatar]
Thanks, Pat. I really appreciate your take on This Bloody Love. I'll release this soon with a 'little' polish, but I know I'll have to work hard not to over-produce it and kill the feeling. All the best!

@nadine
You're welcome! What I really love about the post FAWM work is to compare the final version with the draft. Sometimes it's five times better, and sometimes I already had 80% done so it's only about a cleaner take.
It would be so rad if could get real instruments for everything. I rather cancel a project before I continue without a real guitar and my singing. Programming drums, bass, strings and brasses is OK for me. So I'm definitely more arranger and producer...

Thank you for your kind words and thoughtful comments on my songs, @patabsent - Very much appreciated.

@nadine
Thanks for your comments! I'm glad you enjoyed my music and listened to two completely different songs and roles.
During FAWM I usually do fake instrument drafts, cause I'm not a good performer. Some songs need 100 takes, other are beyond my skills. I enjoy diving deeper into production and arrangement. So most work happens after FAWM and will be shown on YouTube or Bandcamp.
"Magnetic Rose" has been 9 tracks. That's quite less for a full production, I'm used to 30-50... but not during FAWM xD Mixing needs a lot of patience and practise. Just continue and try :)

Hiya! Thank you for the comments on "Fish Baby Birthday" and "Heads Will Roll." Those were both very "different" songs for me, and I'm so glad FAWM gave me a place to put them out there! :)

Thank you so much for interacting with me so much this FAWM! You’re a wonderful songwriter and I hope you come back for more next year :)

Hey,
thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the small track.
To be fair: I used a special sample library here, which is great for that stuff - and playable.
And great that your inspiration kept flowing here!

You wrote insightfully https://write.fawm.org/forums/1193 "it's so positive [&c]...FAWM fulfills the old internet promise of connecting people globally through art and community, and that's a beautiful thing. " Indeed it is and I never quite thought of it that way, for I do indeed miss the internet as it was in the late 1990s/early 2000s when the promise hadn't been betrayed.

Thank you for the listen to (and comment on) "Your Practical Magic." :)

@brisk
No problem! Fanboy alert: the record that I listened to on repeat for many months in 1996/7 was "In A Bar, Under The Sea" - it is so eclectic. "Fell Off The Floor, Man" "Opening Night" "Serpentine" "Roses" - these were basically the songs that taught me that songs didn't have to adhere to the strict metal or punk paradigms that had been my way into music.

The weird thing is I never really listened to any of their other albums. This one was so complete I didn't really care about other dEUS records (though I heard a few songs that sounded great).

Yup got it thx

I believe you're being sarcastic about James, but yeah I hated him in the beginning because he WAS the cool guy, already cool enough without having to play guitar and make the girls swoon. I'm actually going the opposite way of you, as I was more of a physical gear kinda person years ago and have just started realizing none of that is necessary to get your ideas down. In fact it's a burden because there's all this engineering work that has to take place to even get set up to make the music. But I guess a purist might say engineering is part of the process that makes the music. Well, with what I've learned how to do in Garageband (I know I should upgrade to Logic haha) it makes the purist way quite foolish, for my method of writing anyway. I even saw a YouTube short today where Rick Rubin is outdoors talking about the benefits of digital vs analog. He's been all over the internet lately. I would suggest his interview with Lex Fridman.

Pat, thank you so much for your kind comment on "Easter Sunday". It really means a lot to me that you feel that I did the story justice. Your first two songs (haven't gotten to that third one yet) have been among the highlights of FAWM 2023 for me so far.
