Technical by trade, musical by training. In 2019 I took on a project to write a song a week for a year (see link)
I didn’t write as much in 2020 but completed Fawm with 15 songs including one very fun collaboration.
In 2021 i made a concept album. ‘The marriage trap’ 14 songs about the development, collapse, reconnection and ultimate end of a dis functional couple.
2022 I had time and leisure on my side so I did a road trip round the US drawing inspiration as I went - I bit off more than I could chew and ended up with 8 songs - http://www.letojog.uk The tunes are here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-896hqDsko6E7UjMCEKhiEeozpmVlGBB

2023 - it’s back to the concept album - in the past I’ve written things over a long span of time - so this year I’m going for 1 day. A day in the head of ‘ The empty, loveless life of the aging middle manager‘.
I’ll set it up in three parts separated by the three meals of the day.
Lyric and chord sheets are here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1e6qV4cdR_W0zEik6bdSS3fd6K9inpYhj
My initial track listing is:

[breakfast]
Another day dawns
None of this was planned
Now they’re gone

[lunch]
The passion’s so hard to come by
Drinking again
In danger of having a fall
When did these kids get attitude
She blames you
I’m numb to the seasons
I need a thrill
Food is bad, I’d die without it

[dinner]
A moment of clarity
Retirement is just around the corner
Just stay positive

Thanks so much for your comments about Sometimes That’s Enough. I’m so glad you found things to enjoy.
[avatar]
I so appreciated hearing what you liked about "The End is Coming For Us" -- thank you! You listened to several of my songs and commented during this past month plus. I am grateful.
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words on “Melancholy” - you obviously listened closely to the whole piece, which is very much appreciated! :-)
[avatar]
I’m just now catching up on returning comments I missed during February (thanks to the brilliant new search filter!) and glad I came back to check your music out. Very cool! Also great to hear someone else who does live drums as I (mostly) do too! Cheers!
[avatar]
thanks for the reminder - this week's been a whirlwind. Thanks again for the awesome collab!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. 🙏 The vocal is _sort of_ female: all vocals are synthesised (Yamaha Vocaloid); sometimes I can mask it better but it takes time to polish, which is not FAWM-friendly!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for the shout out on that forum thread, means a lot! I need to check out your piano one (am intrigued), will try and get to that one in the next few days :)
[avatar]
Appreciate your comments and insights!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful comment :)

@mk2021
Thank you for your kind comments on my song. Congrats on writing so many this FAWM yourself.
[avatar]
Thx a lot for comments on "Bridges" Much appreciated.
[avatar]
I understand what your comment meant now on Ghost Clown Motel being Dr. Bong. I have fixed that. It is now the right song. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.
[avatar]
That sounds fantastic. Excited about the collab
[avatar]
No worries, happy to finish post-FAWM as well! The two vocalists idea sounds pretty cool
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Be Your Ghost, definitely will make time for the collab if you're down!
[avatar]
Thank you for your comments and checking out "Dr. Bong." I really appreciate you

@whptb
Cheers for your comments on Dog Day...really like your project for this year and will be diving into the full album
[avatar]
Thanks for the comments on “Lovely With Regret”. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
[avatar]
thanks RS for taking time during our crazy skirmish weekend to listen to Hard Times Comin'. I sure appreciate your comments and dropping by. Congrats on your trophy. woohoo!!!!
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind comments and for teaching my construction-working ass a new word: maudlin! I've behaved so maudlin in my life, but I never knew there was a word for it! Cheers and congrats getting so much done!

@siasa
Hey, thanks for your kind comments on the Mermaids!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for listening and for the comments on my song.
[avatar]
Hey, (a genuine) thank you for listening to '"Thank You So Much For That (Useless) Advice" and I'm SO glad that you enjoyed it! Thank you for saying that it reminded you of Ben Folds, I would never have realized that but it makes sense and is a good style for me to think about more. Really appreciate the feedback 😊
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your comments on my newest one (to be named)! You're very kind.
[avatar]
Hey, rshakesp, thanks so much for your nice comment on "The Boatman and the Goddess", I'm grateful that you took the time to listen.

I enjoyed listening to "Retirement is Just Around the Corner".
I just retired a short time ago, and the experiences and emotions are spot-on.

I also did a concept album for this FAWM 2023 (I'm calling it a #Folk_opera ), it is about working in an online retailer's return process.

FAWM On!
[avatar]
Appreciate your comment! Thanks so much. :)
[avatar]
I appreciate you listening to a couple of my tunes, and thank you for the kind words!
[avatar]
Haha, particularly when you're trying to knock out 14 in a month!
[avatar]
Thank you very much for your comments! It means much to me.
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words about my tune. I am enjoying your stuff as well!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to "When You're Famous!" It was a great first collab experience for me.
[avatar]
@dutch
Thanks for that generous comment on DIRTY RIVER TOWN
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to “You Give Good Text.” It made me realize I used “Turned Out” in two different sections and now I’m thinking of revising that. Unintentional repetition in my own songs annoys me. 😂
[avatar]
@atam94
thanks for listening to and comment on "Night Drives In Our Old Town" - I'm glad you enjoyed listening!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thank you! I'm super curious to hear if and how "Carry me home" evolves. I hear a big song, but I'm stuck with my means. Thanks for listening and commenting!
[avatar]
Thanks! Vocals are double-tracked, harmonies too. I always double-track because my voice sounds fucking awful on its own, haha
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen and comment. Much appreciated
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on my first!
[avatar]
@andrea
Thanks for your comments on Dank Swank. I appreciate it :)
[avatar]
Ah thank you for picking up on the progression, Rich! After the descend bit I was playing something like an F#m7 over an A bass, then moving the bass to B and incorporating the B into the F#m7. Felt weirdly jazzy. I have no idea technically what all that means 😂 but it felt pleasing to play.

@sml
Thank you for the listen/comments on Will You Get Tired Of Me Someday
[avatar]
Yours if you wish, without hope or agenda.

I will say that I'm watching this all from the relative safety of Wellington, 500km away, but we're still heading into 'write your name on your trampolines so they can be returned to you' territory.

(also, I saw what you did with 'truncation'. Nice)
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your feedback on Dutch. Means a lot!
[avatar]
@ohdeer
Just found you and now I shall listen to your concept album in the right order.
[avatar]
I'll get to listening as the time starts freeing up but for now: thanks for the Calamari Love Song comment but you need to read our superb local pizza place's menu! https://www.pizzagiovanni.com.au/
[avatar]
appreciate your comment on my newest song, its really appreciated i feel like you really helped elevate that song also you just showed me how I can think about instruments as more than just instruments (the heart pulse) i appreciate it , I'm excited to check out your stuff
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you enjoyed my improvisation! I'll try to find some batteries tomorrow, cause I also need them for the in-built tuner.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out one of my songs, and for your kind words.
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment! The six strings of the taishogoto are all tuned to G. The two drone strings are an octave apart, and so are the four melody strings. The strings could potentially be retuned, but you would likely need to use different gauges.
[avatar]
Thanks for visiting the buffet at "Taste Buds Rule the World". Glad if it brought you a smile.
[avatar]
Also, it should sound odd because it is odd 😀 Loved the track!
[avatar]
@nadine
Tricky! That explains why I got out while counting! Last FAWM I intentionally ended up with 5/8 and had a lot of trouble writing down the chord sheets...
[avatar]
FINE 😛
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment on my track, appreciated! 👍
[avatar]
Hi again !

I like that idea. Definitely noting it, because I like what a phaser does so, maybe I'll try it too on a bus linked to multiple tracks
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to "jack" :)

I'm curious to hear what you experienced when you got through the tunnel ! It sounds inspiring to see how an environment can make a impact on a song
[avatar]
Thanks for the great feedback, appreciated!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your comment on "The Journey Of 1000 Steps." Like you I'm a big fan of songs that just end and don't fade. Sometimes it's used to good effect but most of the time I find it lazy.
[avatar]
Thank you for your kind comments about "Before I was Born" :)
[avatar]
thankyou!
[avatar]
Good to see you on here! Was your US road trip in 2022? Will delve into your google drive shortly to see what you've been up to!

Oh with 4 mics you can get a great sound! Just make sure that you measure the “overhead “ mics to keep them in phase. I do it using a string pinned to the bass drum with the pedal, with my left hand I go up to the overhead above the snare (recorderman) and use my right hand to pin the loose end of the string to the middle of the snare. Then I move my left hand with the angled string between overhead mics to make sure the distance is the same. Pretty simple if I’ve communicated it clearly
