I've been playing for what seems forever, and writing more seriously for ten years. Acoustic guitar is my primary instrument, but I play frailing banjo, mandolin/mandola, and bass as well. I wish I retained more of the piano I took as a kid.

Criticism / comments:

I'm pretty thick skinned, and I care a lot about trying to make my songs better. If something occurs to you while listening to one of my songs, whether a thing which bothers you or an idea to make it better, please feel free to incorporate it in whatever comment you make.
As a listener myself: I love listening to and commenting on songs here at FAWM. Unless you explicitly say so, or we have some prior history, I will *not* add that kind of criticism to my comments here. I know how precious is the flow of creativity that FAWM sets free, and I would be loth to dam up any of that flow for any of you.

Thanks very much for the feedback re: excessive piano resonance. Was very helpful. Ended up going back to the MIDI and taming things quite a lot.

Hi Tres, I hope you don’t mind, but I posted the music and vocal for hollyhock dolls last night. It was quiet enough and I stopped coughing for long enough that I figured I’d give it a shot. I’ll try to do a better take when I can, but I just love the tune you gave it, and it’s fun to sing! 🙂

Thanks for listening and commenting on "Stop Draggin' My Heartbreak Around." I feel like that one has a bit of tweak-during-March potential!

@manuel
Thank you for your friendly comment on "gathering of friends" - and sorry for reacting so late. The reason is that the mentioned gathering took place in the meantime and kind of threw me off the FAWM track.

@tan482
Thanks for your lovely comments on “let love grow”. It is a banjo, but a very mellow one. And I usually EQ it so that the highs are not as prominent as I like the mellower tone!

Thanks for commenting on my collab song "Defy Gravity" with mikeb.

Thank you for the feedback on The Red Head Pirate!

The story I intended to share was that a girl, unwanted by normal crews, found her place among pirates and through association with them was able to chase her dream of finding a sea serpent/drake. The lying at lee was not that the pirate ship was immediately near a legal ship, but just later she found it. Though I will say my sailing terms are rusty at best and I could very well be using it incorrectly.

I meant to leave the story kind of open ended, playing into the desire to believe there ARE really sea serpents(especially in the days of sailing ships). I didn't want to end on her actually finding it, but leaving it up to the listener to fill in the ending, if they wanted.

The chorus I meant to be the red headed girl's lament.

I think I see what you mean about some aspects being kind of vague or interpreted too many ways. That could probably be remedied with a couple of verses. I initially was worried that it would be too long a song, but I guess in a maritime tradition people keep singing verses as long as they want to lol.

I'm happy to hear more thoughts if you want to share them - I'm an author so I've got a fairly thick skin and practice with going over my writing with an eye for improvement ;)

@mikeb
Thanks for the comment on my collab with Tammy, 'Defy Gravity'!
[avatar]
I love it!! Thank you so much! It's fantastic to hear my words put to music and sung. And the lilting melody is calming and peaceful. Thank you.
[avatar]
I added you; let me know if that doesn't work(to be able to upload the music)
[avatar]
Your tweaks and the bridge sounds awesome!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on "Not About Us." Yes, the genesis of the song is a person who always seems suspicious that a song is about her (it isn't--uh, except now, I guess!).
[avatar]
I gotcha! Thank you for thinking of me.

This being my first Fawm, I'm not entirely sure of how to go about collaborating (my other collaboration being with a friend I know outside of fawm), so if/when I need to do anything, please let me know.

I'm intrigued to hear what you come up with!
[avatar]
I could also look around and see if I can find someone to sing it(especially if there's a forum specifically for looking for collaboration partners?)
[avatar]
Unfortunately I don't sing, though I wish I could. I'm more than happy to adjust the lyrics as needed to fit a melody.

No worries if that (me not being a singer) makes it a no go.
[avatar]
Thank you for the comment on "Not Afraid of the Dark"!
Obviously no pressure, but if you want to put music to it, let me know. It'd be fun to do a collab.

@jeff9
Many thanks for the listen to The Badder the Better and the comment, man. Mighty nice of you. It was great fun to do!
[avatar]
thank you for commenting on "haunted"!
[avatar]
Glad you liked my Liverpool Diaries song.

@wistah
Thank you so much for listening. I hope to hear your banjo soon. I pulled mine out yesterday day and found I had put it away with a broken string.
[avatar]
Thank you for your kind words about the Holly Hock song. If you put together an instrumental track I'm basically a second soprano, more comfortable a little on the higher side than low. The songs I play most on the Ukelele most often contain some combo of D,A,G,,Am,G,C,F,Em, and Dm. if that helps at all. :) I'm really not a musician, I'm just learning.
[avatar]
Anytime Tres. No need to even ask. And thanks.
[avatar]
thank you! finally hopped on to post my songs lol.

@siasa
Hey no problem! Look forward to hearing more from you. Incidentally, when I do eventually get a song of my own up, feel free to be forthright.
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on my first ballad! Super encouraging to see after a long day.
Re: the enjambed lines. I had to look up that word cuz I hadn't seen it before, though I did the lines intentionally. On reflection it's probably Shakespeare's influence on me and possibly the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
[avatar]
Cheers for the welcome. It's my first time here, so I'm just getting use to the site and it's workings. I'll upload something very soon. Nice one, Mish.

@manuel
Thank you for the friendly welcome! I'm still figuring out the site and how the community works, but the overall atmosphere already feels very friendly.

Hello to you! I’m a newbie to FAWM. It was nice for you to welcome me!
[avatar]
Thanks for reaching out to say hi. I'm getting a great vibe from this place, and that's partly thanks to you. Have a fun and productive month!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Toplining sounds like a fun thing to do. I have a knack for melody and lyrics. Thanks for reaching out!
[avatar]
Appreciate the welcome. I'm diggin "Two Hearted" at the moment. Cheers!
[avatar]
Oops, thank you! Fixed now...
[avatar]
Thanks, I appreciate the welcome! Nice to see another multi-instrumentalist here. We're looking to restart our songwriter showcase as soon as we can find a venue for it in the NH/VT/MA area, as we both miss it (my husband/duo partner does the booking for it), both because we miss playing with other songwriters and because we miss the requirement to write.
[avatar]
Thanks! Nice to see banjo and mandolin players here.
[avatar]
Thanks for the welcome! Glad to see someone here from just up the road.
[avatar]
Ooh, good info about what kind of feedback you're looking for, and I appreciate that you don't give criticism unasked for! Thanks for the welcome, this seems like a warm place!
[avatar]
Thanks for the warm welcome.
[avatar]
Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to hearing your songs. Any comments or critiques of mine would be welcome. I'm always open to making better music!
[avatar]
Thanks for the warm welcome! Looking forward to my first FAWM!
[avatar]
@gavran
Greetings, and thank you for the welcome!
[avatar]
Definitely sounds like we could make something work. Am really hoping to get a Collab done with another Fawmer who is going to hopefully walk me through sending files and some of the technical aspects. Hopefully if all goes well. I would love to do more collaborations

@thetau
Just chiming in... I'll be listening
[avatar]
Hey @tseaver
Good to see you back. In addition to mandolin, guitar and ukulele, I’m trying to learn clawhammer banjo. I bought a mint 1892 Fairbanks banjo from an older friend of mine who has collected a lot of interesting, quality instruments, but feels like it’s time to starts letting go of some of it. I’m hoping to use it in a few songs this year
[avatar]
Heya! Have a fantastic FAWM!
[avatar]
Glad you are back! Looking forward to your music! Happy FAWMing!
[avatar]
Looking forward to your music!!!!
[avatar]
Thanks for your welcome. I haven't spent much time here, and I'm still deciding whether to do the 14 song challenge, this year. It looks like you're a fretboard guy. I'm a keyboard guy. Q: why don't you post songs on this site? I'm still learning how this works. Again, thank you for your kind greeting.
[avatar]
Hey- thanks- I used to live in Fredericksburg from 2009-2011. Do you know Zach Farrow?

By the way- I recommend the app: bandlab for basic and collaborative ideas..
[avatar]
I appreciate your approach to creativity. Am looking forward to hearing some of your stuff!

You wrote: "If something occurs to you while listening to one of my songs, whether a thing which bothers you or an idea to make it better, please feel free to incorporate it in whatever comment you make."

I have a lot of experience with writing detailed recommendations for improving songs, especially lyrics. As you mentioned, many folks are *not* looking for this kind of feedback. Since you are, I encourage you to send me links to songs you post. (Maybe I'll see them anyway, since I've followed you, but I'm new to FAWM and can easily imagine I'll be lost for a while in all the content, and may miss them.)
[avatar]
Banjo and mandolin are my instruments as well. So I am always looking for inspiration. I have been trying to play frailing banjo for awhile. If you have some songs this year with the banjo, please hashtag them, so I will find them.
I am currently on holiday and only having Garageband and a uke. But I will be home before FAWM is over.
[avatar]
Hello there, Mr. Seaver....It is nice to see you around. I hope that you have a wonderful FAWM23!
[avatar]
Hey, thanks for the welcome! I'm happy this community exists, & I hope you have a good February
[avatar]
Thanks for welcoming me to FAWM. I'm looking forward to it.
[avatar]
Happy FAWMING
[avatar]
Hey man. Here we go again, eh?
[avatar]
Hey T, thanks for leaving me your comments about the ABU plugin. I already paid for it, so I'll try and get some tech help. If I have to eat it, I'll try your recommendation. Thanks for chiming in and have a great FAWM!
