sovereignity

Liner Notes

this is some stream of consciousness to get back into the practice of writing, although I had the chords lying around in Ableton for a while I must confess.

I've been practicing a lot this year and not writing very much at all so I'm really excited to get back into it but also ahhhh there's so much self doubt in this process. I started with something really loosey goosey that gradually started taking shape and then I added some backgrounds and now boom it has form. Wild how that works

Lyrics

i mighta known you better
if i had not been so goddamn to the letter
and i suppose i could choke down a smile
for the sake of sovereignty,
wasted on me
I am lost without some sense of self I’d clung to
like you

i could never touch you in a million years i know
but i chose the truth

my whole life i’ve only known something to water,
but never one to grow
and I can fold
fold small like paper

see you later, see you later
no choice is my own

take every chance you get to grow
one step, another
there’s nothing for me in feeling so low
low, low, low, low, low I know

i have spent a million years inside my head
but i still have hope
hope

Lovely stuff. Vocals are stellar. I can only dream of writing lyrics this intimate and resonant.

Ahhh, so lovely to hear your voice again. And that stereo trem is blissful, as are all the voicings and harmonic choices. Nothing overdone here, a great reflective number.

This is wonderful. Free, but not formless. And full of surprises. Very glad to have found you.

How lucky are we to get to peer into the well of your psyche!? Really rich sounding recording and there is a lot of spaciousness to take in each thought that you have sung.

this is great, love your vocals and the layering is incredible. I like the way the melodies weave around the jazzy chords you've got here. Great lyrics too, a fantastic start

I love this, it feels like floating through someone’s train of thought… very scenic.

Your melody and harmonies, the layering, there's this element that's hard to put into words. It's transcendental, dreamy. The lyrics very successfully took me into all the feels of having felt like I'd been there before, as well. Fantastic vocal performance!! Long story short - dreamy song. Well done.

Mmm that's a delicious jazzy profession, and your vocal melody snakes around them in such a satisfying way. Love the fluid tempo as well, the times you hang on certain notes just feel so patient. The vocal layering is giving me Frank Ocean vibes.

I could listen to you sing the phone book. Nice work. I’m vibing with this.

Wow, this song is amazing! I enjoyed how you layered your vocals, it adds so much depth and emotion. It feels so rich and immersive. The atmosphere you’ve created here is mesmerizing. The way the sounds blend together with your voice really works, I had to listen twice! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of your music, this was such a strong first impression, and I can’t wait to hear what else you create!
