01/03/23 - I do it! 13 FAWMs, 13 wins. Huge thanks to my collaborators this month (@bigmood @loveonamixtape @susyblue @hanley @tangle), and also to anyone who has commented and engaged with my music over the month, it's massively appreciated. This is the closest I've gone to the wire and it's sadly been at a cost of getting waaay behind on listening and thanking people. Hopefully everyone will be around in March, as I'll get to you eventually, promise x

2023; aka FAWM #13!

Currently holidaying in Thailand (edit: i'm back now), so it's difficult to envision writing music in a bedroom studio in chilly Chesterfield. Alas, I'm always excited to write new music and collaborate with people all over the world.

My band Water People played our first (and second and third) gig last year which was very exciting. We did a couple of live videos in our rehearsal room here: https://linktr.ee/water.people

I'm still in Sheffield Beatles Project too, we did a big two-set show in December and it was magical.

I have grand illusions of maybe doing a few solo sets this year, noisy/shouty electronic stuff. We'll see..

Congrats on another excellent set, Ad. Best of luck with Water People and throw me a line when you've got the Aussie tour dates sorted.
[avatar]
Never gotten the Michael Stipe comparison before. Thanks for hitting up my page in March!
[avatar]
Thank you Adam for your warm comment on Into the Night. It was a pleasure to collaborate with @zebraphone and I'm happy to read that you've enjoyed listening ti our collaboration.
[avatar]
thank you so much for listening to my song!! :)
[avatar]
Thanks for you comments Adam! It is just one guitar... apart from at the very end I added a little instrumental with higher notes.
[avatar]
Yes!!! That’s the thing with bass…I was like „okay I can play the guitar, what’s all the fuzz about bass“ and then it was like love at first sight lol. Never felt that groovy and badass while playing guitar. Also more connected to the song somehow.
Thanks a lot for the comment!! I put a lot of effort into the arrangement, so I’m happy you like it. The samples come from my Nord drum 3, just changed them a bit.
[avatar]
Hey Adam! May I have your email, perchance? (mine is on my profile, so you could just email me!) If your dance card isn't too full for the rest of the month and if yer interested (insert usual "no pressure" disclaimers here!), I had a possible collab idea? Regardless, thanks as always for the listens, kind and thoughtful comments and siq-ass music!

@sci
Thanks for your kind comment! You may have noticed that the song included "take 4" in the title. It's tempting to keep revising, onward to a 5th take, but I'll restrain myself as I embrace your feedback :P
[avatar]
Thanks for the listening sesh dude. That 1-note guitar is ACTUALLY 2 notes, there's a little slide that non-philistines would notice. And all my guitars are DI'd since I live in an apartment with paper-thin walls. It's ok for clean guitars but distortion sounds like ass, so some studio redos will be necessary.
[avatar]
Cool cool fuck yeah I like this, gonna try some shit today 🙂

*Cackles*
[avatar]
Thank you! Yes, I like to explore different styles a lot :)
[avatar]
@sci
yep, I'm back, at least partially!
and yeah that was a pretty straightforward arrangement for me!
Imaj7 - quartal thing (kinda v7?) - IV
not "boring" but not crazy.
will that trend hold, though? time will tell.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your comment on my first song. Wow, to be compared to NIN. I mean, I listen to their stuff quite a lot and they are definitely one of the reasons I love the sound of analogue synths so much. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your wishes!

@hanley
Re: the end panned sounds - yeh they were sampled from an acapella sax solo/demo I found on YouTube. It was pretty funny as the guy was showing off some new fangled reed or something boring! But boy could he play🎷
[avatar]
@oddbod
Ah well that confirms my suspicion - I haven't read it
[avatar]
Hey whenever you got something you'd wanna collab on feel free to send it over! Excited to hear what else you're doing this month dude
[avatar]
I would say hello from down the road in Bristol, but I don't think you'll hear me in Thailand. Nevermind! You'll convince me yet to take up panpipes with your username.
[avatar]
I will NOT let the PATRIARCHY dictate to me about things like VOLUME, Adam!! (jk, thank you for your comments and I will try to figure out why "Selkie" is so very quiet, but I warn you, I have no idea what I'm doing.)
[avatar]
@jbp123
FINE, I'll take the George Harrison comparison (free lyric/band name for you there). I do see what you mean though, with the prominent rhythm guitar. Thanks for the comment mate. Hope the hols were brilliant
[avatar]
@tangle
XTC vibes?! The highest compliment imho. I had to Google the muses names too and almost certainly botched their pronunciation. :)
[avatar]
@jbp123
Hello you! Can't wait to hear your new sounds, if you ever decide to stop destroying our beautiful planet with your jetsetting and come home. (I'm just jealous because the most I can manage is the needless slaughter of McDonald's cows.)
[avatar]
You’re basking in the glow of that AMAZING trip (where apparently all you did was check your tweets. Is that right @judypie?!)

I’m waiting to hear what little ditty comes forth after the muse of monkeys in Thailand?
[avatar]
@tangle
Your trip looked amazing!!! Can't wait to hear what you make this year and maybe squeeze in a collab.
[avatar]
@oddbod
I've no idea what "city pop" means 🤷 😂
[avatar]
The Peter Hook feeling was intentional, I spent a while looking for the right kind of flanger to put on the bass - I left the low end in more than he does because I wanted it to really thunder when I came back to the root near the end, but I might go for a less improvisational Hook-style bassline later in the month, maybe!

The guitar tone is Jazzmaster bridge pickup into Guitar Rig 6's High Gain Breather preset, with some compression and a shelf EQ around 150!

If you are interested in something newer in the vein of dystopian, but short stories, try our George Saunders' Civilwarland in Bad Decline. He just drops you into worlds similar enough to our own but are slightly (or less than slightly) off.
[avatar]
Yeah we saw that BUT the problem was the email affiliated w/ our FAWM account was super old so we kept sending it to some old email and wondering why we couldn't see it lol. All sorted now.
[avatar]
@ryako
Hey you! Hope you're doing well and having fun on holiday!!!!
[avatar]
godbless dude! Just uploaded the EP to distrokid as a matter of fact, I almost can't believe it. Still hoping to release bugs in the lemonade next if you're up for it. Definitely let's collab again this year!

@clioem
HAPPY FAWM!

You know, my facebook feed was once full of that sheffield beatles thing. I liked that feed way more than my feed now; I don’t NEED any more help spending money on casino’s! so how come we haven’t done a song together?
[avatar]
Hey there :) happy fawming! I’m excited!
[avatar]
Salute!
[avatar]
Did you just post Wonderwall on my wonderwall
