Time to Go Home

Liner Notes

So I found the "American football never meant" tuning and it's going to take conscious effort with this to not become my entire personality... anywho

Once again this is SO MUCH ROUGHER than I would normally publish, but FAWM it is!

Of the songs I've published so far, this is the one I feel like would most likely turn into an actual release without re-recording. I'd probably add on piano, maybe bass and accordion. Actually like the vibe a lot. I might redo the guitar to use standard tuning though, maybe not. I think this one has legs.

I always feel super weird about putting guitar in things, as strange as it sounds I don't consider myself a guitar player, as I find my abilities on the guitar...unbalanced? I have a lot more theory and tricks in my head than I do experience in my fingers, and it shows (at least to me). This took probably half an hour to try and record, while the piano tunes were both first takes.

If I were doing it for real I could just comp together a few takes but whatever. It is what it is, and either I put this out or it doesn't come with a demo.

Lyrics

Shadows dance across the floor
Silhouette of a long lost friend
they'd come running through the door
Throwing dirt and play pretend

Shadows dance across the floor
Memories in a long lost time
Dance together through the night
Adventures had and hills to climb

We were in a world
All our own
We danced and twirled
Until it was time to
go home

(Inst)

We would sail across the floor
Chasing monsters off the bow
Across the sea to fight some more
Chasing off the here and now

We would sail across the floor
Chasing clouds across the sky
Fight them right across the moon
Had no care no how nor why

We'll chase down a world
All our own
That pulled and swirled
...

Shadows drift across the floor
Can't tell if they're lost or found
Drift away to distant shores
Maybe I should chase the clouds

This song has such a cool vibe. Your voice, phrasing, and melody sound great with that guitar part. I'll be listening for more!

Yep, it has legs! Make that thing run! Nice job!

Nice chord progression you get with this tuning. It really helps give it that dreamy memories feeling. And your voice has the wispy quality that is just right for the lyrics.

I agree with @spinhead ... you're being too hard on yourself. If you're concerned about your guitar playing, I can't wait to hear your piano playing! Love the repetition of phrases in the verses. I got a Ben Folds vibe from the first chorus. I could definitely see Ben performing this. Really fantastic piece!

Agreed re: Legs! And yeah totally would work like this. It's so crazy how sometimes a different tuning pushes you in one direction or another. Anyway fits nicely in that AF, Frightened Rabbit space but feels like your own thing too! Also, as much as I love that genre of music, I appreciate that you've got a little confidence and oomph in your vocal delivery.

These words are beautiful. I'm sucker for images of the sea. So much instinctive human memory in pictures of clouds and chasing things, and shadows. Excellent usage of universal themes.

Again, you're too hard on yourself. I have been FAWMing 21 years, the guitar is my second instrument after the bass, and you're better than I am. A good bit.

Relax. Have fun. You're producing marvelous music, and it does not in any way sound rough or unpracticed. Enjoy yourself!
