Some Love

FAWM 2025 / Song 7

I wrote the lyrics for this during Sarah Spencer’s most recent 5in5 (5 songs in 5 days) Songwriting Challenge, this past December but #finished it today. This is a love song, but not romantic love. It’s about parental love and my feelings about mortality in the face of my love for my child.

I had a hard time getting through this, and I hear/see every flaw, SO I might re-record it later. But for now it’s proof that I finished the draft.

Instrument: koa baritone ukulele tuned low DGBE

Lyrics

The earth dreams of being a star
I’d be a ghost to stay where you are.
Haunt you so sweet
Just outside your vision
Watch while you sleep
Pretend I still breathe in your rhythm

I won’t give this away
I don’t care what they say
Forever’s a myth but it’s where I came in
Some love you hold in your hand
Some love you don’t understand
And it just doesn’t end

Why were we crying that night?
I couldn’t make mortality feel right.
Seconds tick through
In an unfair direction
Despite what we do
We never get all our steps in

I won’t give this away
I don’t care what they say
Forever’s a myth but it’s where I came in
Some love you hold in your mouth
Some love you carry around
And you swallow it down

How many hugs til you’re certain to thrive?
How many nights will I stay alive?
No, the life that I gave you was never mine
But we will be ours beyond time…

I won’t give this away
I don’t care what they say
Forever’s a myth but it’s where I came in
Some love is scared but it stays
Some loves just have to be brave
At the close of the day

Such a poignant song about what matters the most; the love for our children. In a way, this reminds me of the "Love You Forever" children's book and how there is a cycle with our mortality and we live on in our children. And, there is no limit to the amount of hugs required as they grow older... Beautiful.

Beautiful! I like your soft use of the uke, as @nadine noted, and your vocal is lovely.

I stopped listening to uke songs cause most of them were too happy. And then I found this little melancholic gem. You make your uke sound so melancholic and dreamy. Great use of dynamics here. Your voice also suits so well. I really love this!

Apart from the beautiful singing and the great sounding uke, this has some really unique lines and an overall... delicacy... distinctiveness... lots of food for the heart, the mind, the aesthetic sense.

Side note before we get started: Don't you hate it when the kitty sleeps on the clothes after folding but before putting them away? I mean, when will they ever get put away now?

Another side note, but not really, that subtle vibrato is gorgeous. I love how you sing it true then let it just start to waver before the end. Beautiful.

Speaking of beautiful, the sentiment here and that first verse sets it up perfectly. Those last four lines are exactly right. The lyric and the music go together just right. Your performance is emotive. A dang good one.

absolutely adore the lyricism! The vibes of this are also super folk/fantasy I wouldn't be surprised if this showed up in like a lord of the rings esque (i think I spelled that word wrong) world. In short I love it :) (also shout out to your cat snoozing in the back)

Oh wow. This is gorgeous in every way. So many powerful phrases, and your singing of this melody is definitely haunting - appropriate for the lyrics. "Forever's a myth but it's where I came in"....such a good line. I can hear that you really believe in the words you're singing, and that gives this an even stronger impact.

Parenting is such an incredible source of song inspiration! This is gorgeous and sad and very profound. Personally, I find I'm often more focused on being terrified of my children's mortality, so found it really powerful to hear you sing it the other way. The bridge section where you really ramp up the emotion on the delivery is fab, and the way you then settle into the acceptance of the last verse. Great write, definitely a keeper!

Beautiful voice and song. I really like the lyrics, melody and uke playing. One of these days I'm gonna have to get me one.
