Liner Notes

#soundscape #folk #stolenlines

Here's the third, and final for today, installment of my soundscape project. I had the idea of using street noise so I downloaded several snatches from freesound.org. The idea coming from Jimi Hendrix "The traffic lights, they turn blue tomorrow" so I stole some of the lines for this song from a google search of other songs with traffic lights in their lyrics. (As noted below.) I spent entirely too long on this for what it is.

Names of the artist/songwriter in ()'s below. Apologies for editing them for my own purpose.

Lyrics

I just want to race along
With a full head of steam
I'm praying for good fortune
While the traffic light is green (Vete)

Until we crash and burn
Spreading debris and blame
Still we forge ahead and hope
The traffic lights don't change (Lena Meyer-Landrut)

I fell in love with a woman
Scarred with tire tracks (Jimi)
Broken glass and sweet, red blood
Tattooed across her back (Jimi)
I wanna kiss her at the next traffic light (Meghan Trainor)

Not looking for any trouble
I've plenty, don't need to borrow
And life is speeding by while the
Traffic lights turn blue tomorrow (Jimi)

I wonder if we can last
I truly do not know
I ask the lights if they'll be bright (Taylor Swift)
To tell me when to stop and go (Snoop Lion)

I fell in love with a woman
Scarred with tire tracks (Jimi)
Broken glass and sweet, red blood
Tattooed across her back (Jimi)
I wanna kiss her at the next traffic light (Meghan Trainor)

I think Stephen sums it better than I'm able to, but really like the inherent pulse and wash of sounds in the the field recordings,
my producer hat instantly thinks it would have been cool with some gnarly sparse impressionistic fuzzy Neil Young esque electric guitar solo in the instrumental sections, and I would maybe EQ carve out a bit more space in the field recordings for the music, and having a bit more of the dry vocals and push them a bit more upfront, fun little detail with ending with the siren

The combination of the ambient chaos of the city and the soft and steady guitar is executed perfectly. The background noise almost functions as a baroque accent at times, lending a little colour and pattern to the regular rhythm.

I particularly like the way you used the lyrics that described the woman. Very evocative. And I thought the ending on the siren to pull over was perfect.

The city sounds are so chaotic like something terrible happened!
And your song is a total contrast to this chaos! Dreamy, calm, sophisticated.
Quoteing Lena Meyer-Landshut was suprising me!
