I live on the country side in the south of Germany. I love to call myself a sound artist, poet and bass player. In my "real" life I work as a social worker and therapist. Music is a powerful force in my life which grows more and more in the last two years. I am a big fan of playing together. So I take any chance to do this. Since a few weeks I am a proud member of a band - playing the bass there.
My artist name is Mahtowin, which means Bear-Woman. It reflects my connection to the natural world and certain animal guides, which seem to inspire my work. The power of the icebear works inside me. And also the power of the Selkie. I think the icebear power makes me play the bass and my Selkie part makes me write some kind of very delicate lyrics sometimes. Both - the icebear and the Selkie are guides to me.
In music as in life I follow many traces. My personal goal is to be aware of what is around and inside me in the present. Now. Try not to think too much about the past or the future (which is hard sometimes, but I try). To stay in present and to recognize the beauty around me (which is a lot) and also the anger and grief, the love and the joy. To accept that all this is LIFE - and I love it!

I am back for my third FAWM!

Very interested in collabs!

Please also check out and listen to @dukemeyer, @dragondreams, @billwhite51, @fuzzy, @nancycunning and @safred

Call me she/her/Andrea/Mahtowin/Bear

Constructive feedback to my bass playing is welcome - but only if you have in mind that I started learning e-bass in Feb 2022 :-)
As you can see above I am German. English is not my mother tongue and I often struggle with the translation when I comment on songs - I try to do it but it will not be very detailed.

"I'll never be like other people, but that's alright because I'm a bear!"

@george
Thank you very much for the amazing "Cemetery Songs" comments!
[avatar]
@fuzzy
Thanks for the excellent message!
We can do more than one collab and use all of those ideas!
[avatar]
@fuzzy
I just noticed that you named me in your bio; thank you for that!! 😀
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out "Chogo's Death Renga". I actually have 3 haiku related sings this year. "Spring is In The Air" is haibun(prose and haiku) "A Thousand Nights - Tales of Ise" is very early Japanese poetry which Basho and other haiku masters cited occasionally in their poetry
[avatar]
Thanks for the mention 😀

If we're going chronologically by what metal I was into growing up, then next year's FAWM should be me ripping off Killswitch Engage for 14 songs.
[avatar]
Thank you for you kind comments, Andrea, and congrats on a prolific FAWM!
Sirius took the spaceship back home safely, so we're all good. 😀
[avatar]
OK, I'll warn you ! Pippa posted a music only tune on druidism : https://write.fawm.org/songs/20487
[avatar]
:) You were totally clear about how you felt in that moment, and it's totally OK for you to not change your mind about that. You get to do FAWM your way! I hope I didn't seem pushy!!! I didn't mean to be.
[avatar]
[avatar]
Thank you 😀 I'll definitely come back to this one after FAWM to tidy it up, add some drum fills and make the dynamics better, but I do love that riff.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for listening to the epic tale of "Flaco the Eurasian Eagle Owl!" :)
[avatar]
Andrea - I thought of you and your spirit animal when I listened to the song Selkie by @loveonamixtape It's here: https://write.fawm.org/songs/12770
[avatar]
You're too kind, Andrea, thank you very much! <3
Magpies are lovely. I don't feed the birds here (or not too much), otherwise it's too easy for my cats to catch them! Besides cats, I also have a strong connection to trees (as my pic may suggest, haha). It's great to meet someone who's also strongly connected to nature (and inspired by it).
I'll be back to listen to more of your music as well!
[avatar]
Thank you very much for your lovely feedback on Sirius' music and mine! Much appreciated! :)
[avatar]
Ahhh thank you! I made a certain special person cry a little bit 😊
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words and feedback! 👍
[avatar]
🙏😊
[avatar]
[avatar]
Too right! I have to remind myself of all the famous "imperfect" voices out there, doing just fine. It is a lesson in humbling the ego enough to get the work good enough for now. It's healthy!
[avatar]
You know it is hard to hear my own voice, it's never as perfect as I think it should be. So when someone says something nice, it makes me very happy. Thank you again!
[avatar]
Thank you for your kind comments, I'm happy you enjoyed!
[avatar]
Thank you, although I would say you should go watch Akira. It's an absolutely brilliant film 😀
[avatar]
[avatar]
Danke für Deine Kommentare! Du hast wirklich sehr viel zu Stande gebracht.
[avatar]
In English it is important to use the term trans woman, which conveys respect for the person’s status as a woman. (Unless you meant an intersex person or enby (from NB or non-binary) or trans man, of course.) I am assuming the phrase you used is a direct translation from a polite term in German, and that you would prefer to know the polite terms in English. I know if I could speak another language I would want to know those terms. If you have questions, I am happy to chat, here or more privately.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your awesome comment on "Mit dir am Strand spazieren zu gehen" and for eventually being willing to give it a try... Of course, you can change and alter the lyrics any way you like... I am looking very forward to it... :-)
Cheers,
Arthur
[avatar]
thanks bear you get me :)
[avatar]
i love it. the music and vocals are perfect. you left out a verse but the song is probably better without it. th final verse gave me the chills. bravo and thank you!
[avatar]
i just found it, so i will post
[avatar]
i received your email and the we transfer link, but i cant find the song anywhere after downloading it.
[avatar]
Just posted a musical version of Let the Sun Shine Down on Me and marked you as a collaborator. Thank you for letting me sing them. (On Sound Cloud, I used your FAWM name, but I'm happy to change it to your real name if you'd prefer that.) So much fun to get to know you better this FAWM.
[avatar]
Thank you 😀 I really want that track to just be all-out, no messing about!
[avatar]
You're absolutely welcome. I only wish my attempt at a compliment wouldn't have brought you to a place where you asked me to edit it.

It is a lovely song, I'll not bother you again.
[avatar]
Delighted to, was not aware I could.

edited, sorry to offend.
[avatar]
Well, I did TYPE it correctly, but this computer is only about a week old so who knows what it's doing correction-wise. *shrug*

Really liked it, although my showing off failed. :)
[avatar]
@hmorg
Thanks for the comment on "The Grisly Tale of Edward Frenzyfeather"! The vocoder does indeed make the vocals sound like a robot. I may, however, get someone to perform actual vocals for it, which leaves me open to the question of how to process and mix them to preserve the unearthliness.
[avatar]
@yam655
With regards to "I'm so Fragile" being about packing stuff would totally make sense. In that particular case, though, it was part of a set I sat down and sang to try to catch up. I started with the title, and I was thinking about inner fragility and personally cracking up. (Whether something that simply shakes the ego up or something that shatters the personal frame of reference for how reality is supposed to work.)

Being short leads to it sticking and being thought about more than spelling it all out. It's short and almost absurd, instead of long and potentially depressing. It's like a fairy you can only see out of the corner of your eye. If addressed head-on it becomes invisible.
[avatar]
[avatar]
take as long as you need. im in no hurry. i am very happy you have decided to do it, as i know of no one who could do a better job with it.
[avatar]
i have tried to send an email from 2 different accounts and both give me an error message, so i will just copy here. i trust you to recognize what kind of music to use from a reading of the lyric. id like a full sound, witht he vocals dominating, and communicating pain, anger, resolve, courage, defeat, etcany questions as you are working on it, dont hesitate to ask meyour accent will not be a problem, those who havew trouble understanding the words have the printed lyrics to follow.  what is important is you..your expression.

SISTERS OF THE BROKEN FEET

i was serenading a white lizard
in a trashed out double wide
a man came out of the shower
i had nowhere to hide
he came at me with a machete
saying "just give me a kiss"
i stuck a hairpin in his eye
and my life was set adrift
i guess it was my face to meet
the sisters of the broken feet

now im drinkin with the ghetto's hand me downs
in a shantytown house on puget sound
ive seen the grease in the geisha's comb
and the scalps in the ditch where the buffalo roam

im sitting on a sofa
that pulls out into a bed
with some friend of mia farrow's
whose face is cherry red
watching the big valley
calling it the audra show
at the station break he jumps me
he doesnt listen when i say no

i can find my way back home again
if i follow the scars and count my sins
through these unfamilar street
walk the sisters of the broken feet

i was down and out in texas
when two pretty boys came by
invited me to share their lunch
in their penthouse in the sky
they gave me a bath then took my clothes
and threw them in the hall
one held me down the other
tore apart my sugar walls

my face is battered, black and bruised
my belly lined with scars
the sisters of the broken feet
whisper "now you are one of ours"

We are sick of this life
Why wont they let us go straight?
Why do we exist?
Let our memory be dust
There must never be another generation
of women like us

[avatar]
Thank you for your comments.Yes, this is actually a song from my everyday life... and i really grateful for the translator programs. Without them it d take much longer to write in english.
[avatar]
Hi Andrea,
I wrote a lyric that would be perfect for your voice. The subject matter might be too horrific though. The title is Sisters of the Broken Feet, and if that title doesnt turn you off, shoot me an email at BWhi51@yahoo.com. and Ill send you the lyric for you to consider a possible collab with me. I feel this song would be perfect with your music and voice.
[avatar]
It's posted. 😀
[avatar]
thank you for all your comments and for recommending my song on the forum. it makes me feel like its all worthwhile when someone as artistic as you likes my work,
[avatar]
have you checked out @arthurrossi 's german language lyrics? maybe there is something there you might be interested in collaborating with him on. he is a really nice guy and an excellent writer.
[avatar]
File sent. Sorry for the hassles. 😄
[avatar]
Will do. 👍
I think it's not working because I missed a bit from the URL . 🤣
Please try it again before I go through WeTransfer...
[avatar]
Can you make something with this one? Recorded as an improvisation a few minutes ago. 😀

🙏
[avatar]
Please can we do more? 😊
[avatar]
Thank you so much! Your poem, and the way you delivered it, is beautiful. I'm honoured and humbled that you chose one of my pieces to add your lovely words to. ❤
[avatar]
Oh ! Gute Idee ! Ist es nennt mitschreiben ? Zusammenschreiben ?
[avatar]
Please do it! I love your poems! 😀
[avatar]

Viele unter meine Lieblingsbanden sind Bass/Stimme duos (Loïc Lantoine ; Musica Nuda ; Birds on a wire...)

[avatar]
Thank you so much for your kind comments <3
[avatar]
Thanks for your very kind comments on my song "Give Away Pile". As a guitar player, I never knew what I was missing by not playing the bass! Who knew that the bassists were having all the fun!
I love your music.
[avatar]
@mahtowin - I was listening to this song by my friend @meg_alison today and it made me think of our conversation about being present and the rest.
[avatar]
So excited about collaborating! Just sent you an email with some possible ways to start, and I'm open to anything.
[avatar]
@safred
Thanks Andrea :) I'm pausing the Haiku's for a little bit now to try something else, but I may come back and do some more later. I need to change it up so I dont repeat myself! 😀
[avatar]
@reklov
Hi Andrea! Herzlichsten Dank für deine netten Songbewertungen! :-)
[avatar]
Hi there
Just a note to say I have now put a demo up of my Winter's Tale

https://write.fawm.org/songs/14193

Thanks for your comments when it was just lyrics.
[avatar]
Glad to be the cause of you remembering your childhood. Those Reagan years were a roller coaster ride and the economic policies he pushed through are still haunting us (despite having failed for 40 years to deliver the promise of "trickledown benefits".
[avatar]
@andrea
I could send some lyrics for you to put your music to. I will need a bit of time to write something. This will be fun :)
[avatar]
You are very, very kind. Thank you. 😊 🙏
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment on let go, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
[avatar]
@safred
Hey Andrea, no problem, I removed you, but I appreciate your creative concept with this, really great idea :)
[avatar]
Ja. Ja. Ja. I can offer a never-ending stream of lyrics. Do you have any images or phrases or questions or haiku or series of notes or chords you want the ouija board to draw on? Hooray!
[avatar]
Just read (or reread) your bio - I love the selkie and the icebear images. It’s got me thinking about my own possible spirit animals. Imagining one that is skitters around on the ground always busy and another that soars around in the air seeing a whole lot of things at once. I feel like we might complement each other. Always up for collaborating, translating, or welcoming what arises.
[avatar]
@safred
Really enjoying the Haiku inspiration Andrea, that was a great idea indeed! Number 3 is interesting :)
[avatar]
Thank you for the comment on "The Gate". It's my first time here and I'm already having a blast - I went from a heavy rock opener to a blues song about wanting to be a druid. Who knows what will come next? This challenge inspires the best kind of whiplash!
[avatar]
Thank you for your lovely comment and I so appreciate that you really felt this song
[avatar]
[avatar]
Thank you again. 😀
The illustrations are all being done by an AI art app on my Android phone, called "Dream". I decided I'd use it for inspiration this year, either by generating an AI image to use as inspiration, or by creating an image to match the mood of a piece as I finish it.
[avatar]
@cts
Let me tell ya - you took that thing through the exosphere! Very interested in what other creations come from your bass exploration. Keep the party movin'!
[avatar]
@safred
Thanks Andrea, the Haiku poem was immediately evocative! I recorded it on my lunch break today, thanks again :)
[avatar]

Thanks for the lovely prompt Andrea.
