I Like Songs

# Liner

Every time I finish writing a song I excitedly pump my fist and yell "another one". It always astonishes and fills me with joy. There is nearly always a sense I'll never write another song, and then when it happens the world makes sense for a minute.

This one is called I Like Songs and it's about my love of sad lonely tunes.

This versions line "i'll find peace at the end of the bridge" falls flat, also the third verse, but this has been the best recording so far. will clean up easily. I also nixxed the outro but it worked out.

# Notes

The song has a slightly unusual format for me. Emphasis on the word slightly. I wrote a line about bridges so i ended up moving it down and turning the working chorus into the bridge. At first I told myself I didn't know what I was going to do for the bridge and then i realized i was already playing it. so no chorus, just a refrain. this also means i will have to put in a solo, which I prefer in any song i write anyway, so win win.

In my dreams I'm friends with a slide guitar player that plays like an angel and we spend all our time on the front porch. Maybe we'll all pitch in an buy him that pedal steel he wanted for his birthday.

Lyrics

I Like Songs

[capo 3]

bm - em - g - bm - em

rain clouds on the edge of this town
six strings just holding it down
i like songs
the sadder the better

i put my faith in rock and roll
and this hardtop always glows my soul
yeah i like songs
the sadder the better

sing a song where a love is gone
another one where we lost all hope
yeah i like songs
the sadder the better

[solo ( em )]

love shattered like an ironwood tree
pill bottles shotgunned with ease
yeah i like songs
the sadder the better

i'll find peace at the end of this bridge
when i feel the tears start to shed
i like songs
the sadder the better

[bridge]
d - em - g - a - em
i might not know right from wrong
but somewhere i'm hearing it call
put on a record
and spin it real slow

yeah i like songs
the sadder the better
i like songs
i hope you wanna listen

Lee - I like how you build this joyful song about sad songs. I get that joy of writing a song of your own always being built on all the songs you’ve listened to. And yes to those amazing ways you can get your voice and guitar to do such different things. When I grow up, I wanna do that.

Yeah! Extremely relatable, and I love the groove and the line "put on a record and spin it real slow." Hugely honored by the allusion to Ironwood Strong!

Yay! 2 Sanford’s praising you here!
I love the rhythm interplay between voice and guitar here, you do guitar stops to let lyrics handle it, then a bit of jangle after to bring it back around! Plus the theme of it, just touching on things that can be deep subjects…hey, I like songs too, and really dig this one!

It almost feels like it wants to be blues, the way you're singing. The guitar work is really interesting! I like your lyrics, too. Great work!
