Adenauer

Liner Notes

Here in Germany, there is a creative artists’ collective called “Centre for Political Beauty” (Zentrum für politische Schönheit). They launch brave and cheeky anti-fascist happenings.

Recently they have raised a substantial amount of money to equip a bus, the “Adenauer SRP+” with a massive PR, lighting and sirens. With this vehicle, which at first sight looks like a prison transporter, they had planned to support the many marches all over the country before the general election in two weeks’ time. Their ultimate goal is the legal ban of the fascist party AFD. The police, however, try to thwart this plan. Yesterday, they confiscated the bus in Berlin, for no reason at all – the pretended claim of an insufficient operating license immediately turned out to be untenable.
The activists still haven’t got their vehicle back.

Adenauer is the name of the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany after WWII. And the abbreviation SRP is a reminder of the successful legal ban of a new fascist party that tried to enter the German political scene in the early 1950s. A party ban is the last resort, and the German constitution provides for it because we here in Germany ought to know exactly how much harm fascists can do, especially when they get organised. Unfortunately, the current Bundestag does not have the courage to finally use this sharp sword. However, hundreds of thousands of citizens on the streets are demanding exactly this, just like the “Centre for Political Beauty”.

P.S.: As of today, Adenauer is free! Another MOT was done (the 4th in a month!), and there was, of course, nothing at all wrong with the bus ... 😀

Lyrics

Wir sind die Zivilgesellschaft,
lieben die Demokratie.
Leider gibt es viel zu viele Nazis,
die verachten sie.
Darum fahren wir quer durch Deutschland,
demonstrieren mit unserem Bus.
Das ist der Adenauer,
der Adenauer SRP+.

Er hat reichlich Pferdestärken,
Lautsprecher und helles Licht.
Er zeigt den Verfassungfeinden:
“Dieses Land bekommt Ihr nicht!
Wir durchschauen eure Propaganda
mit der ist jetzt Schluss!
Denn hier kommt Adenauer,
der Adenauer SRP+.”

Sie ist weder Freund noch Helfer,
die Berliner Polizei.
Demonstrierende blockieren,
ja da ist sie gleich dabei.
Und mit fadenscheinigen Begründungen
klaut sie den Bus,
sie klaut den Adenauer,
den Adenauer SRP+.

Dient die Polizei dem Rechtsstaat,
oder schon der Nazibrut?
Wir lassen uns nicht vertreiben,
bleiben wachsam auf der Hut,
wir fahren weiter quer durch Deutschland,
demonstrieren mit unserem Bus,
wir befreien den Adenauer,
den Adenauer SRP+ ...

***************************

We are the civil society,
we love democracy.
Unfortunately, there are far too many Nazis,
who despise it.
That's why we are traveling across Germany,
demonstrating with our bus.
This is Adenauer,
Adenauer SRP+.

It has plenty of horsepower,
loudspeakers and bright lights.
It shows the enemies of the constitution:
“You're not getting this country!
We see through your propaganda,
it’s over now!
Because here comes Adenauer,
Adenauer SRP+.”

They are neither friend nor helper,
the Berlin police.
Blocking demonstrators,
yes, that's where they do.
And with insincere justifications
they steal the bus,
They steal Adenauer,
Adenauer SRP+.

Do the police serve the rule of law,
or are they already serving the Nazi brood?
We will not be driven out,
we remain vigilant and on guard,
we will continue to drive across Germany,
demonstrating with our bus,
We will free Adenauer,
Adenauer SRP+ ...

That news about the Berlin police is very disturbing. I don’t trust police in general but appearing to cooperate with the AFD fascists is a low I didn’t expect. Thanks for the good news update.

Cool, hätte nicht erwartet, dass es zum Skandal schon ein Lied gibt. Und das bringt die Geschichte auch noch so schön auf den Punkt.

Very nice. I was expecting angry, but got determined instead. Determined is good!

Great stuff, Karan. I didn't know about the bus or the organisation. Thanks for bringing them to our attention in a way that was great to listen to as well.

I don't speak German but I understand the sentiments and the musicality shines through. This is old school protest songwriting of the best kind, Pete Seeger would be singing along with this for sure. I hope you get your bus back, there is a lot of crazy shit happening everywhere, we have to stay vigilant and do what we can. I salute you and your comrades.
