Summer Dust & Dreams

SONG #3

This song dates back to 1998. It's a song I thought I had lost forever and which I was completely shocked to find a few months ago on a DVD-R backup of an old PC hard drive I never knew I had. Looking back I think it had gone missing when I switched to a Mac from a PC in 2002. I remembered the title but not much else. And it had always bothered me, because I knew it was one of the best of my early songs. I remember playing it at a bar that had an open mic several times back in 1999 and getting a pretty good response.

On that DVD hard drive backup I found several songs from 1998, including another song that I had thought was lost forever as well that I really missed, along with several song fragments and early versions of songs. I also found demos I did in 1999 using Acid Music, one of the first looping software programs you could buy. That really surprised me. Just wish I had the multi-track files.

Anyway, the demo of this song cut off abruptly and I realized that the lyrics had never really been finished. So I thought I would finish it up and collaborate with my younger self from 27 years ago, and get a decent demo of it for this year's FAWM. I have yet to lose a FAWM album of demos. So I don't think I'll misplace this one again. Lyrically, I thought about changing it up considerably like some modern Bruce Springsteen going back and messing with Darkness On The Edge Of Town outtakes. But I decided against that and only made small edits that served the song as it was.

UPDATED DEMO 2/12
Lowered lead vocal a bit, changed a lyric ("walks a drunk" was "shows them")

Lyrics

Sun is going down, time to get out from the heat
Radio plays as exhaust fumes mix with grease
Harmonica man in a pair of Dylan shades
Lights up a smoke as the ice box hums away

Summer dust, summer dust and dreams

Girl walks into the bar in a form fitting cotton dress
Man looks over his shoulder and says, “man did you see that?
If I could touch her I’d never let her go
If I could hold her you'd see me no more”

Summer dust, summer dust and dreams
Just wet my soul, just wet my soul
I’m thirsty

Bartender shakes his head and walks a drunk to the door
You shrug your shoulders laugh and say, “how bout one more?”

“Load up the jukebox friend I’m buying this round
Load up the jukebox friend I’m buying this round”

Summer dust, summer dust and dreams
Just wet my soul, just wet my soul
I’m thirsty...

This is a solid, well written song that sets a vivid scene of a moment and place. It's so cool that you were able to find a lost song like this (and others) from a time period that feels like a million years ago. That must have been such a wonderful feeling to finally find it because even though you couldn't remember much about it, you never forgot about this song, along with memories of a live performance and a positive audience response. And for good reason, it has a great feel and flow to it. A magical discovery for a magical song.

I love that hook/title, "Summer Dust & Dreams" so much! It pulled me in just like ol' Bruce's songs did years ago! And it sure did not disappoint!! You paint a vivid picture...I'm in that bar! I see that girl! That drunk! And I really love the idea that you collaborated with your younger self! Great work!

Wow that is a great story to find a 27 year old gem like this. Interesting what u were writing about as a young man. It sounds great for today as well. This album could be called “archaeology”. Will u re-release some other oldies?
