Saw this one and grabbed the first book handy which was McCartney's "The Lyrics" and on p32 he talks about "the impediment"--the stuttering on The Who's "My Generation" and on Bowie's "Changes" and The Beatles' "Birthday", so I dashed off this silly thing. No big deal getting something this simple and frivolous done within the hour but couldn't figure out how to upload to Soundcloud with their new upload process that went live today (with no more option to use the old, "classic" one). Finally figured out that apparently the new process won't allow certain characters in the song file like the date, which Garageband puts in there automatically.

Lyrics

Chicken To Go

My daddy said son
Go and fetch me a hammer
But the basement’s so dark
I started to stammer
And say
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
No way

You want me to see
Some movie with zombies
Where they eat people’s brains
My heart’s a tsunami
So I say
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
No way

Guess you could say I was a cautious kid
But I never had a problem keeping my feelings hid
When the situation seemed a little hairy
For me it was downright scary

The big wedding day
My heart was aflutter
Took a look at the preacher
And I started to stutter
And say
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
I’m ch-ch-chicken to go
No way

What a cute lyric and great implementation of the tact/prompt. I love how the story grows throughout the lyric. And I guess there's no real resolution in the lyric but we get a sense that the hesitation is overcome.

Relatable here. Liked the linear notes for inspiration on the stuttering, and great use of such on the ch-ch-ch-chicken, bringing it even more in line with a reason a person might stutter. The last verse is the crowning story, cause that's pretty big, but my favorite is the first because I've been a long time chicken of the dark!

Took me a minute or two to remember any "stuttering" in The Beatles' "Birthday". ("Yes we're going to a party party..."??) Despite you making me think so hard early on a Monday morning (and my brain woke up at 4:17 a.m. for some reason), I DID enjoy your song! Another winner! ❤️

I like it. I really like it. You're kinda swallowing the punchline though. If I were singing it I'd do a sorta backing vocals response thing. Forgive my unsolicited opinion and awful singing here https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/aanz5h49g67v9972hz3vo/Chicken-out.mp3?rlkey=1adgvhurnwpzwcr6tjwgihc8i&st=0pw04duc&dl=0

Too funny, you had me laughing from the first ch-ch-chicken. And the last verse puts a big exclaimation point on the theme.
I'll check out your other songs too, especially Mahomes Lament
