What did it feel like

I was a quiet child
Always in the background
Never any good at sport
Or able to defend myself
Always had middling reports from school

It was a difficult time
To be different
The stage was my release
I could be someone I’m not
Someone with self-belief

My Hamlet was sublime
Though I was only nine
I inhabited the role
It suited me just fine
A frog no more a tadpole
