Early Daze

Liner Notes

Quite a few of my songs this year have been heavily influenced by my recent move Back To The City after years Not In The City but this one tackles it head on. My emotions, they are all a-jangle at all times.

This guitar part has been in search of a lyric since the first week, I rejigged it a bit to fit this one, and played it on acoustic guitar for reasons unknown, and played parts of it quite badly which I think you will find "charming".

Lyrics

I was stuck on top of a mountain for too long
the dam burst and locked me in
a punishment for an unknown sin
I needed to put right what was wrong
by voyaging to distant lands
and listening to rock & roll bands

a part of me came back to life
but consciousness is a double-edged knife
I know I shouldn’t miss my comfort zone
but I can’t help feeling like my cover’s blown

I’m moving forward but isn’t it a pity
I’m still feeling weird, but in a new city
how can I doubt me? let me count the ways
I guess I am still in an early daze

couldn’t live on the outside any longer
gripped by the greenness of the grass
so I upgraded my guest pass
what didn’t thrill me hadn’t made me stronger
try to make amends for the years before
try to make new friends but there’s so much lore

doors unlocked with a brand new key
to find room after room of anxiety
I know I shouldn’t miss my comfort zone
but I can’t help feeling like my cover’s blown

So catchy.. and great harmonies! "I know I shouldn't miss my comfort zone...." such a great line.

This feels like it might have been quite therapeutic to write, was it? I miss living in a city - London, Southampton and Birmingham were my longest city stints - and being a country bumpkin these days, I find the lack of things to do or that are happening to often be fairly dull. Not always, just quite often. I love the space and nature and stuff, but it would be great to go to a gig on the doorstep, just occasionally. Your Insta feed with all the gigs is quite the vicarious way to feel connected to things! So, thanks for sharing!

The music here is great - I love the way you arrange and mesh the guitars and keys - always something engaging to listen to. The beautifully constructed words get across your anxieties, the vocals are great. And the BVs? Harmonies in the early choruses, and those counting counter-melodies at the end, they're just so, so good. I love details like that.

This is a Deloreon ride back to the 80s. The comfort zone/cover blown couplet hits strong and very effectively.

Well this is candy-coated twee pop at its finest. Guitar sounds awesome, as do all the various adornments, including those bvox. From my point of view as someone with a point of view who has listened to a lot of VV, this is among your best. Could use more squeaky chair, though. When you say, The City, do you mean The City?
