Liner Notes

I originally wrote the chorus for this back when I was a teenager and it's been orphaned for the last twenty five years, just waiting for me to write the rest of it!

It's still a bit rough around the edges and needs some tidying but I'm glad that poor, lonely chorus finally has a home.

Lyrics

this ain't a plea
for recourse
or a harsh treatise
to settle scores

this ain't a song to keep you warm
when the fire's dead
and you're all alone

this is a lullaby
this is a lullaby

this ain't a call
to rally the troops
to intercede
in our dispute

this ain't a hymn
to the past
a desperate dirge
funereal march

this is a lullaby
this is a lullaby
a lullaby
a lullaby

this is a lullaby
this is a lullaby

One of the things I love about FAWM is it allows those of us that have been around and writing music for "a few years" to not just continually write new music but also connect with our younger selves. This song is beautiful, and it's wonderful that present you has found the right way to complete past you's original inspiration. Love the strings when they come in, but purely and simply that chorus when it's just guitar and voice is brilliant. Well done young you!

The song lives! It definitely doesn't sound like the kind of thing you'd write these days, I wonder if I'd say that if you hadn't mentioned it in the notes. Either way, it's really lovely, and a welcome bit of sugar after listening to "nobody was sleeping". Your voice sounds better than ever, some of those notes ring out so nicely. I could hear the drums even before they kicked in, but I was thinking it would be interesting to hear a version with a shuffly kind of brush beat and some subtle piano a la "Scattered Black and Whites". But tbh it works perfectly with just guitar and voice.

sounds epic. I could see a giant crowd at a stadium singing along with you. so nice to connect with your past self, teenage you, and collaborate on some art! old you and new you make a great team.
