Hi, I'm Matt (he/him).

I made 43 songs in FAWM 2023. I edited 28 of those tracks and made two albums. One with instrumentals and one with vocals. Both albums are #Chill and both albums are available on Bandcamp.

And, please check out my "Songs Of Healing And Growth" playlist on SoundCloud. I publish to it weekly. #Chill #SpokenWord #Vocals #Synth

Feel free to reach out. I’ve emailed a few people this FAWM, and want to interact with those of you who enjoy dark lyrics and warm synths.

Thanks.

Thanks for your recent comments. Nice to cross paths!

@nadine
Thanks a lot for your comments! Congratulations for releasing your album!
[avatar]
Thank you so much!! "Splinter" is a powerful lyric by @mctown. I hope to update the mix with @gm7's awesome guitars once my ears have recovered post-FAWM frenzy. Great work this songwriting season!!
[avatar]
Thank you so much for commenting on "Monster at the End" -- I'm glad you could relate to my lyrical wanderings! :)
[avatar]
Congratulations on putting in the hard work to get the win this year -- with 43!
And a nod to curating them into the "Sad Songs ..." album too. The common styling and content binds them together nicely. 👏
[avatar]
@the_bachelor I misunderstood what you were asking. Email sent!
[avatar]
Not a problem man….. see you next year…..👍🏻
[avatar]
Hey, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your music. You really do great stuff!! Would it be ok to grab a couple of your tracks that I can use for indexing….. I’ve got a couple of ideas for next year, and love how you mix….. Not a big deal if the answer is no….. I completely understand 👍🏻

Finally getting back to people after the final rush. Sorry for letting you wait.
Many, many "thank you"s for all of your encouragement and motivating comments.
They were a big part of helping me carry through this difficult FAWM.
Let's keep in touch, yes please (as much as our circumstances allow us).
[avatar]
Cheers for your comments! 🍻
[avatar]
Thanks for the comments on “Ferry Land” — Much appreciated! Congrats on finishing — nearly three times over, it looks like! 🤘
[avatar]
@nadine
You're welcome. By the way... Your forum post remembered me of a BIG list I started last year on my website: https://t.ly/SUG- I listed all successes and failures trying different genres. Maybe it helps you to find your way.
[avatar]
@nadine
First FAWM and tripple win. Congrats!
[avatar]
Thanks for leaving notes on "The End is Coming For Us" and "Catch the Train" -- two very different projects for me. FAWM is very cool!
[avatar]
@siasa
Thanks for all your kind comments on my tracks. Re singing, I'm probably the worst possible person to dish out advice! I tend to put my songs in C or D (easier on guitar, but especially, keys) but my much more musical siblings keep telling me I'm trying to sing too low for my (limited) range. I think the takeaway is keep experimenting in different keys...
[avatar]
Thanks so much for listening to (and enouraging me on) "Who Would Be Mine."
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words on "Beware of Dancing Robots".
Yeah, I feel you. Sometimes, it seems impossible to find fitting words/rhymes/vocals or the 'right voice' or tone (or simply the right mood).
But I also think you've found your own unique style, each of your songs (especially with vocals) is instantly recognizable as a Matt-song (in a very good way!). If ever there was a vote, I'd put "yes, please, explore your vocals (if you find the time and energy)" in the ballot.
[avatar]
Right back at you, thanks for motivating me!
[avatar]
@siasa
Thanks again. I really like that FAWM is a safe space to try out different styles of songs both lyrically and musically. Glad you are having fun with it too!
[avatar]
Thanks for the comments! Much appreciated!
[avatar]
@siasa
Hey, thanks for your kind comments. I'll be sure to have a listen in - looks like you have been prolific!
[avatar]
First of all: what an incredible treasure trove of creativity your profile is! Hoping to make it through your huge catalogue (the sheer volume alone is very impressive) and get me some inspiration for the remainder of this FAWM.
Second: Thank you for the comment on "Baby Too Late", it is very much appreciated!

@djtjb
Re: ...drop the directions and make me! How much is sampled? Nearly ALL of it lol! The drums are a chopped up break loop, the main underlying loop is a couple of different samples mangled on the KP3 and the dialogue clips are all from the movie Troll. The main organ riff I played using Xpand so I think it's the only non sampled element. When I first started making music 20+ years ago I only did sampled DJ type stuff and then spent about 8 years away doing exclusively electronic music ie ambient, edm, drum&bass, industrial. And doing synth work occasionally for my brother in laws band. But the pull back to sampling has been strong for some reason this year, so I'm just rolling with it. Thanks for all the listens and supportive comments, much appreciated. And keep kicking out those sweet jams, I'm digging every minute of them!

@sollis
It would be wonderful if you could sample that hat for me, but don't go to any trouble! Recording some different foley sounds is on my to-do list for March, so I can always try and recreate it.

If it is easily do-able for you, it's that jangly sound on the second and fourth beat of each bar that I'm liking.
[avatar]
@sollis
Ah, I'm not a Logic Pro user sadly! I'll just have to rattle a few coins about and overlay them on a hi-hat and see what happens!
[avatar]
ill start working on the vocals for a little bit of lonely tomorrow
[avatar]
im actually more of a rock and roll singer but when i left the states ten years ago, i had to sell all my gear except for one acoustic guitar.
[avatar]
i sing and play at the same time onto one track, then sometimes play a second guitar part which i double and pan one track to each side, adding different effects to each of those two tracks, usually something like tremelo and echo on one track and reverb and chorus or flange to the other.
[avatar]
thnaks for your latest comments. for the record, all of my non-collabs are vocal and acoustic guitar only. no synths or saws or any of that stuf. just me and the guitar.
[avatar]
@djtjb
Yeah copyright law is a mess. From what I understand it doesn't matter if you even use a millisecond of another song, it can be a violation. I used to sample whatever I wanted without fear because I'm not releasing it commercially, so it's really just for fun, BUT I think with the level streaming has grown that won't necessarily fly anymore. Long story short, all the samples I have used this FAWM are all from Splice. So they are all royalty-free and available to use however you see fit.
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks, I'm happy you enjoyed "Backwards". It's still a MIDI draft and there is lots of recording and rerecording waiting! We won't finish during FAWM but I hope we're getting one step closer.
[avatar]
1985. if you havent seen Krushgroove, youve got to see it. based on the beginnings of def jam records. after losing an audition using the name the disco three, the rappers realize they should change their names and rap about what they love..eating!!! also features sheila e, run dmc. kurtic blow, ll cool j, and more.
[avatar]
Hey.... I appreciate the comments.... I know better than anyone how uninteresting this music is, but it serves a purpose, and hopefully in a future FAWM I might even make it interesting 😀. Thank you
[avatar]
Congrats on your early WIN!!! Keep writing!
[avatar]
Hey there - since you read Muz's lyrics for his song "Green Lantern, I thought I'd let you know that it now has a demo :)

Thanks so much for your comments on The Movie In My Mind. Yes, I agree that David and Kate turned my lyric into a beautiful soundtrack. I feel so fortunate to have been able to work with them. Glad you liked the result.
[avatar]
nothing happens after the ending, that party was the last hurrah for this guest of honor, now he just goes home and sits out what is left of his life.

ill keep singing my stories and you keep kickin out the jams.
[avatar]
I also use Logic Pro, but I’m a beginner!!!
[avatar]
thank you for your comments, and yes, i write all my own lyrics. although sometimes i collaborate with others, writing music for their lyrics or them writing music for my lyrics.
[avatar]
I much prefer Logic for production, but sometimes I find some cool sounds in Ableton and then I bring it into Logic. Oh, and, yes, thanks for the comments!
[avatar]
@mctown
yea

@nadine
Thanks a lot for your comment on "High Noon".... and congrats for winning your first FAWM! In only one week. Wow!
[avatar]
First FAWM & congrats on making it to 14!! Thanks for your encouraging comment on my skirmish. I'll delve into your chillwave here shortly!
[avatar]
Happy music makes me happy!
[avatar]
Thanks for the compliments!

@djtjb
A lot of times I'll just take random pictures I have on my phone and put like instagram filters or other picture app filters on them. But this was actually AI generated from the Dall E website. I've been messing around with it lately and you can get some cool looking stuff.
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words on Mirage, much appreciated
[avatar]
@juhol
Crickey, you are a productive one!

@brisk
Thanks for your positive comment on Sing To Me - I'm glad you liked it. I wish I had mare facility with a guitar, and a studio space that wasn't also a busy family living room, as it would make things a lot easier!
[avatar]
Thanks for the listen to my "Crazier than You."
[avatar]
@djtjb
I have a Kaoss Pad 3+ and have a mic running into it. It's got a ton of effects and it does decent pitch shifting, but not very accurately for melodic stuff. I've tried just pitching it down in my DAW and yeah it never sounds great. My brother-in-law @nahlej381 uses Waves Vocal Bender to pitch shift and I think it's definitely better than my KP3 but never really want to shell out the money for it since this works okay.
[avatar]
@djtjb
Oh a handy tip that @looprication (he's awesome you'll love his stuff, check him out!) gave me my first year: Use the tag #fawmtronica. There's definitely an electronic community here and they are ready to hear it!
[avatar]
@sollis
Thanks for giving 'Flow, My Tears' a listen :) For the lead, I just hit record a few times and see what comes out. Usually I get a few bits and pieces I like in the different takes (as well as some bits I don't!) and that gives me a good feel for how I want the final take to sound.

You're having an incredibly fruitful FAWM by the way. Half way to the 14 already. Well done so far!
[avatar]
@gm7
Thx for the comment..your having a very productive FAWM..well done.
[avatar]
@djtjb
No problem, always more than willing to nerd out about gear lol!
[avatar]
@djtjb
I have the 3D and love it. Linking the gyroscopic x and y axis to different lfos and modulations is pretty intuitive. I've kind of been pining away for the twister for about 5 years too lol. All the knobs! But just haven't been able to pull the trigger.
[avatar]
@djtjb
The Midi Fighter is AWESOME! And I don't even get full functionality out of it because it's really streamlined for Ableton, but I've been using FL studio since I was a teen in the 90s lol. I've tried so hard to switch to Ableton literally just because of the Midi Fighter, but I'm just too stuck in my ways!
[avatar]
@djtjb
I should add too that I'll finger drum the idea, but really prefer to edit everything in the grid after I got it down to get the exact swing and feel I want.
[avatar]
@djtjb
I use a midi fighter 3d as a controller for my drum machine in my DAW. My brother-in-law @nahlej381 has a Live 2. One of these days I'm gonna mess around with it, but it just seems so complicated compared to the comfort of my cozy DAW lol. Thanks again for the listen and comment!
[avatar]
@djtjb
Hey Matt! Thank you for the listens and comments as well! And keep those chill waves comin'! Can't wait to hear more!
[avatar]
Re: Solaria. It's pretty easy to use. You enter the notes in a piano roll, or with a MIDI controller. Then you enter the plain English words, note by note or in a text input. You can enter + to split words across notes, - to prolong syllables. The rest is automatic. The program calculates phonemes, pitch transitions, vibrato, and so on. If you're not happy, you can change nearly everything about this. It has its quirks, most notably that it doesn't fully integrate with the DAW, e.g. doesn't get tempo transitions, and that it doesn't work with Apple's plugin format.
[avatar]
Thanks to everyone who has written messages on my wall. I'm enjoying all aspects of my second FAWM. :)
[avatar]
Thanks so much for checking out "Babies, You've Got To" and leaving a comment. I appreciate your thoughts on the lyrics! Always good to hear what resonates with folks.

Hey there! I bought the full software of Dreamtonics' Synthesizer V and the voices Solaria and Asterian from Eclipsed Sounds. I learned about this in 50/90 last summer and was so blown away after a day of playing around with it that I decided to buy right away.

The free version of SynthV is sufficient for most cases. The full version offers more control over the details, but it's perfectly fine to start with the free one and upgrade later if you think you need it.

The free voice databases they offer are not so good. The ones from Dreamtonics themselves (Kevin, etc.) are also not top level - they're better in Asian languages and not as versatile. Play with these to get a feeling how they're operated, but don't judge the overall quality by them - Solaria is one or two levels above that.

Even if you're on the fence about this when it comes to production and released music, think of all the steps before: Being able to add some vocals when my own voice is broken because of a cold, or in the middle of the night, when the family sleeps, or simply to shuffle around words during lyrics writing without having to do retakes ... it makes some steps in my process easier.

@brisk
No problem - Reaper is cool because it comes with a bunch of VST plug ins - compressors, choruses, EQs, reverbs, etc.. etc... they are all really basic looking but seem to do the job. I don't have a frame of reference because I've never used another DAW. I assumed they'd all have stuff like this tucked away somewhere - though I'm sure you can download loads of free plug ins for whatever software you have and use them.
[avatar]
@brisk
Thanks for being nice about Clissold Park! By autotune I just meant the plug in that comes preloaded in my DAW (Reaper). It is called Reatune. At first I thought it was terrible, but when I realised that as well as altering the pitch you could alter the "response" rate so that it either "snaps" to the target pitch or takes a while to travel there, it has proved more versatile.

@cblack
Glad you enjoyed. 😀

@nadine
Thanks a lot! Have a great FAWM!

Nice to meet you! Looking forward to hearing your work!

Happy FAWM to you! Can’t believe it is almost here already. It’s my favorite musical thing and I hope you love it!

Hi there - no, "Kicks" was Paul Revere and The Raiders. The Kinks... well, there's a lot to choose from , but "Days" is a favourite of mine. https://youtu.be/d0EakQ-BcNQ
