I suppose you're wondering why I've gathered you all here today.

I'm tentatively back for 2023. I have not been making music for some time, and I miss it.

I've been listening to various flavours of bass music, and playing around with a wavetable synth called Vital. I feel like it's going to be my main instrument this year. Expect crunchiness.

I aim to be leaning more into sampling this year too. I got started making tunes in the era of trackers, and I kinda miss it, so I've been grabbing interesting sounds from the world around me using the voice recorder on my phone, the quality of which is far less shit than you might expect, well done Samsung.

Here for some fun. I hope you are too.

This is not a Gateway Track so much as it's just the last thing, sometime last year:

Have good FAWM. Give good FAWM.

he/him

EDIT: my genre is #fatbottom, because whatever I make, you can be sure the subs will move your hairstyle around.

POST FAWM EDIT: Yes I am here for MALM. I am working my way through slowly as time permits; March is the kick-off to picking season.

@leepat
hey, thx, no stress, I meant to send you an email, but it can wait until the harvest is over (in a month?)
[avatar]
@leah0k
P.S. I’m pretty sure that MALM is definitely a piece of IKEA furniture I have purchased at one point.
[avatar]
@leah0k
Thanks for the comment.. also your music is cool and good; we should do a collabora- oh wait… haha- happy MALM

@roxya
Thanks for that lovely message of encouragement on my song. It's encouraging to know that I have indeed improved over the years. I've worked a ton on my vocals and I suppose for me the most difficult thing to work on is the confidence. I'm just not that confident about my voice, but doing things like FAWM helps me with some exposure therapy.
Honestly there's a lot more I can do with my voice, but when in front of people (or even recording) I just freeze. I'mma keep working on it though. Who knows, one day I might be able to express it all freely.
[avatar]
p.s. One night each week (Sunday?) I listened to the "Golden Age of Radio" hours while falling asleep. Fibber McGee and Molly, Suspense, The Great Gildersleeves, etc.
[avatar]
I very much appreciate you listening to the songs and leaving thoughtful comments. It's a delight to experience FAWM this way -- actually hearing what lyrics make someone laugh or hit someone where they live is precious!
[avatar]
You asked me to pick three. I think three of my faves are
Funny: You Give Good Text
Slice of Life: The Lights on the Radio Tower
Weird: Fish Baby Birthday
[avatar]
David, would you send me an email? I have a lyric I'd like to show you. Just click the envelop icon on my page. Thank you. Patty

My hubby may not know my name but he mostly remembers I'm special to him. He called me "the pretty lady that visits" when he could still speak well. He sometimes called me his "number one gal". He lived with me for 19 years during this journey and has been in memory care for 2.5 years now. I'm sending beams of strength your way as you walk this path with your Mom.
[avatar]
thank you for the comments on my song and for listening, much appreciated :OP
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on Get Down On The Floor, I'm glad you were able to connect with it!
[avatar]
Sure is scary, have been there n simply a matter the more it’s a done that the easier it gets. Insecurities about it however seem to linger but giving less fucks also helps!
I loved hearing your voice, more please!
[avatar]
That was really a poor choice of words on my part. I was trying to write a concise response and I attempted to summarize in a word a central quality of the sections of the song. But I should have taken the time to be clearer. I will do so in future.

As to coming up with a jam this FAWM. I don't really know! I'm going through all my old notebooks, trying to clear off my shelves of crap that I never look at but up to now haven't been able to part with. And I'm making lots of progress! I may not post a thing, but I've still been very productive this FAWM.
[avatar]
Ha ha thanks for the comments on "Yodeling Cow" and, no I'm nothing like a farmer. I'm barely a gardener. This was my first venture into a country music style. And the story of the cow is based on actual events and cows. Mooo!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on "Muzak to Scroll By". I agree the triplets are the bomb! I think that was my favorite part of the song as well.
[avatar]
@hanley
HEY! Holy shitballs, I didn't realise you were back again either... so glad you spotted me out there in the wild west of comments!

Yes, the 808 kick is the worlds finest... however I believe I had the CR-78 kit on for that track (my personal fave)... but maybe they're one and the same in the bass drum department?

Thanks for the spins and kind words - looking forward to diving into your offerings...
[avatar]
Haha, alas they're a sexy VST - Native Instruments' Session Horns to be precise!
[avatar]
@oddbod
phew, sounds like a lot of effort - not that the result ain't worth it mind.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments re: Not so long ago - much appreciated. Cheers
[avatar]
@oddbod
Sent to your Gmail address I have for you which I trust is still okay, Cheers
[avatar]
You have a good ear! I am adding a duplicate of my vocal as a second reverb track and setting it at about -11 just to give a hit of warmth.
[avatar]
@oddbod
I'm going round in circles on a song which I think should partly have a string arrangement, nothing too fancy pants. I just can't get anything to work. Maybe I don't have the right sound in my arsenal, maybe I'm just blocked. My solution is to throw it to some one else to become their problem. That person could be you. I sell it well don't I?
No problem if you don't fancy it.
[avatar]
Looking forward to the next one, I'll keep coming back!
[avatar]
Glad you liked the "Watermelon Wheels" song. I have a jpg of the image, but I haven't got a site I can put it on. If that site I linked to (thanks to Google images) is Spammy, I will try and edit it with another link. Thanks.
[avatar]
Thanks for the encouragement! That sideways mouth thing is something others have commented on, and I try to let my face do what it does. ;) At any rate, I'm feeling it!
[avatar]
I wrote a thank you note for your comment on my Watermelon Bike song, but it appears to have disappeared from your profile.
Thanks for the heads up on the link I have changed it. I hope it isn't as spammy,
[avatar]
@leah0k
Oh I remember that! That was a cool song you did. I was happy to be part of it :) I decided to plop in for a bit this year after all. hope you're having fun!
[avatar]
@carlos
David! So glad to have you back! .. I always learn so much from your productions each year…. Thx for the listen.. and yeah, I started using these vocal packs as more of practice sessions of building things around an already established bpm, key and vocal style.. the lyrics are always a bit strange, but you can splice and play around to help you get something down, then get some new vocal skeleton to the song you made! I saw SYSDEMES use this trick for a full blown professional release he did and it was a lightbulb moment for me too.. hope you are well and the music bleeds out of you this year brother!
[avatar]
I'm honored that you picked my song as the first to listen to today :)
The metallic bassy thing is Massive X through a compressor. I think the compressor added a lot to the sound.
Hey, I've got Vital too. I should try to use that this Feb.
[avatar]
Thanks to you and your missus!!
[avatar]
HOORAYYYYY YOU'RE BACK!! You don't know how happy that makes me and many others I'm certain.
[avatar]
@roxya
Just saying hi back. Good to see you here this year. Have a great FAWM.
[avatar]
Ah. You caught me lurking. What's up man!
[avatar]
Thanks David. You too!
[avatar]
Good to see you here again. I skipped last year. I was going to just quit. It's an old whine of mine, but I believe that good craft, never mind good art, is more than goals of and boasts about. . . .quantity.

Nevertheless, I've been thrown from my high horse because, like you, I've missed it.

So, not sure what I'm doing this year. But I'm sure glad to know you're here too.
[avatar]
Hey there, looks like we’re paired up for the random collaboration. Is your preference, lyric, or music, or collaboration for both?
I’m open to any three of those options.
[avatar]
you posted on Februmental which is a topic about experimental music - I was intrigued with your use of distortion to create melodies etc.
[avatar]
@clioem
Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
@jeff9
Thanks! Glad you liked that "bendy" guitar. Love that icon on your FAWM homepage!
[avatar]
Hey, happy FAWMing - looking forward to hearing your interesting sounds!
[avatar]
Hello! I DJ club music, pop remixes, bass house, some future bass, fun stuff 😀
[avatar]
Distortion harmonies and melodies -very experimental! Please link to Februmental.
[avatar]
Consider it done! ('cuz I just did it ha ha)
[avatar]
Hello to the south of Africa! yes Mastodon and the Fediverse are very nice and friendly. Well, happy fawming 2 u, with or without social media =)
[avatar]
You're back?! Amazing! I too have taken time off from making music. Nothing since the last FAWM 2022. It somehow became a chore and obligatory, instead of fun and relaxing.
[avatar]
Oooo but I like the variation. Harmony is the spice of life after all. We can make it fit if the font size is reasonable...
Happy FAWM! :)
[avatar]
thanks for your gateway listen and comment, Happy Fawming
[avatar]
Thank you for your comment, really kind of you💚I listened to your gateway song, really like it! I will keep an ear out for your stuff, keep on rockin😎
[avatar]
@candle
If you're still interested in hearing Esctasy, I've posted a different link that should work this time (sorry about that):

See You In The Shadows…
[avatar]
Thanks for teaching me that, bru. This will likely work its way into my stage banter next show.
[avatar]
nope! But I can certainly come up with something to start us off!
[avatar]
w00t!

Vital is awesome; I just can’t afford it 😂 wanna do a song?
[avatar]
Well, hello there.
[avatar]
@brisk
Thanks for your lovely comment on Callin' For You - and wow for the Hurculean single-mindedness in following through on listening to all those songs... you must need a lie down...
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind comment about the song I used as my calling card. I hope I can produce a song or six during FAWM.
[avatar]
Hey good to see you back! Hope you have a great fawm
[avatar]
Thanks for the great feedback. I hope you have a great year and I’m excited to hear what you come up with
[avatar]
Good to see you! Looking forward to seeing what comes out this year.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out my gateway track and kudos for listening to so many other’s songs too! Enjoy your FAWM!
[avatar]
Hey dude! Good to hear you're jumping back to it! I've been pretty passive the past few years, but also planning to get active again this year. We'll see you on the inside!

Still mean to get over to meet you in person one of these days...
[avatar]
Fun's good, eh?
[avatar]
Glad to see you back, sir! I think we can all agree that the world needs more crunchiness so, if anything, you're providing a public service.
[avatar]
@piney
I see you!
[avatar]
Wow. The Child Who Never Had a Chance is amazing. What a cool thing to put together from found objects. And I love it that you listened and responded to everyone's Gateway songs. Glad you're here.
[avatar]
Decent, decent. Right back at you!
[avatar]
❤️
[avatar]
Oh well thank you sir:) Yeah, consistency isn’t my strong-suit when it comes to music, but we’ll see how it turns out this year😄 Followed you back, will be fun to hear what you’ll make too:)
[avatar]
Good to see you are here!! Woot! Hope you have a fabulous February!
[avatar]
You're back! It's great to see you here again! Vital does look very nice. I'm especially intrigued by the "text to synth speech" feature. I feel like that could really be used in some interesting ways.
[avatar]
Haha! Yeah. I mean my voice nerves just broke and we don’t know why. What’s weirder is that some days I don’t have a voice problem. But most days I do.
[avatar]
Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Hey dere! Your kids are awesome! Made my day to think they remembered my stuff. Hope you have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
I’m ok but I don’t know how many songs I’ll get to this year. I skipped last year all together.
[avatar]
I’ll have you know that my bass is perfectly well.
[avatar]
Welcome back!
[avatar]
So glad to see you back! I can't take part this time around, but I hope to swing by for a listen...
[avatar]
Stoked you're back this season! Looking forward to some new tunes. I like crunchy. Happy Fawming!
[avatar]
YAY! Great to see you again! And yes, I do the occasional D&B track, super inspired in that arena due to the first new EBTG album in over 20 years coming out soon!
[avatar]
Right back at you! Really happy to see you pop up in my feed. Hugs and stuff and let's make some music!
[avatar]
Hey! You back this year? 😊
[avatar]
@leepat
Hello, sir, hope to pick a [ ] with you this year. Reason permitting..
[avatar]
My wife and I listen to the Mass Love albums I bought from Bandcamp, hopefully one day I'll be able to make something a larger fraction as good as I have so far. Cheers.
[avatar]
@oddbod
Hello old chap,
You around this year? 😎
